Default REVIEW: Trader Joe's Steamer Clams

This is a new product, so I just had to try it.
It consists of a tray of about a pound of small
clams (Manila clams, I think) which are fully
cooked and frozen in a garlic butter sauce.

Most of Trader Joe's branded foods are quite
good. This one isn't. The clams have lots
of sand in them. The sauce is far too salty.
I expected this wouldn't be as good as fresh
steamed live clams, nor would the garlic butter
sauce be as good as my sauce (which is mostly
butter -- TJ's had very little butter). But
I could easy imagine a precooked frozen product
could be a lot better than this product is.

Very few of their branded prepared foods are good IMO. Their branded
seafood is the worst. I simply will not buy it with one exception and that
is the 15 count uncooked shrimp. TJ's quality seems to be in decline.

I almost got some shrimp there a couple days ago. Have you found issues
with their other shrimp, or is the one you mention the only one you've
tried?

Well it is all farm raised. The cooked shrimp is as bad as most cooked
shrimp and has a lot of added water. The uncooked is better. The 16 count
is usually pretty good with ice plump shrimp and hard shells which means
they were harvested at the right time and not while molting. The 21 count
is ok but the smaller shrimp are so badly freezer burned it is not funny.
They cook up kind of mushy and hard to swallow.

Steamer clams are soft-shelled clams. Not any sort of hard-shell
clams.

"Clams for steaming" or "steamed clams" are a different story.

I wonder why those are bad and their larger pals are good.

The picture of clams on the package seduced me.

It was a gorgeous photo. Great big clams with
some sort of sauce and bits in it.

The jaws open just the right amount to say
"Come here! Come here! Eat me!".

That just made my disappointment even more severe.
Shame on you, Trader Joe!
