Default FYI: Le Creuset bargain!

I know there are fans of this product so I thought I would pass on that
I saw the 8 qt. French oven on sale for $199 at my local CostCo. In your
choice of red or blue!

I went to see if CostCo is selling them online, but they aren't, so you
will have to check your own CostCo in-house stock.

That is a good price for Le Creuset, but the Calphalon outlets have their 8
quart for $49. We bought it in red.

Ah more my price range. $49 I can deal with.

I seriously wonder why one would purchace a Dutch oven for $199 or
more. I would think a restaurant maybe.

EXCELLENT price! Amazon shows it for $179. Closest outlet store for us
is Gilroy, and I don't know how soon I will get that way again.

Because some times good pots, knives, and other accoutrement costs. <shrug>
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my Le Creuset Dutch Oven. I did buy it at the outlet
for a bit under $199, if I recall? But I wouldn't question anyones
purchase of a first quality one at that price or more. They are pieces
one buys for a lifetime of use, IMO. Investment pieces.

So do I, but I'd never pay even $199. I got mine for $85 at a
going-out-of-biz sale. If they'd made a knock off for $49, I'd have
purchased it instead. Yes, some things do cost more and are worth it.
OTOH, some things are just plain ol' rip-offs.

I just checked the Gilroy website and didn't see an enamel oven for
$49. So if anyone is interested, better call first to see what's in
stock and how much it costs.

Okay. It's better quality than...
Calphalon or other brands? I was seriously curious.

I don't own Calphalon, but didn't think it was enameled cast iron like
the Le Creuset is?

Calphalon has a line of enameled cast iron now, in addition to the usual
anodized aluminum.

So, how does it compare to Le Creuset? The list price of
a Calphalon ECI piece seems about the same as a sale price
of a similar Le Creuset. It seems they're taking straight
aim at Le Creuset with this line.

Is there a lifetime warranty?

And well they should, most French cookware being notoriously overpriced.
Some of it worth it, some of it not.

Because people with too much money indulge themselves with
expensive items that are also beautiful and functional.

I have two LeCreuset Dutch ovens, bought at semi-annual sales
plus discount coupon at the outlet. We had received a Desco
enameled Dutch oven as a wedding gift in the 60's and I loved it
until the enamel wore off and it began to rust inside. I made
do with my Farberware kettles for many years, then discovered LC
and the sales.

FWIW I have discovered that LC now sends the ~25% off coupons
and sales announcements only to people who have purchased at the
outlets during the year. The sales are usually in May/Mother's Day,
and December/Christmas.

Sorry, Steve. I don't know any details on the Calphalon product, nor have
I handled it. I've only seen it on the web.

The trick is which country has done the enamel. Anything from China either
has existing pits when purchased or bubbles and chips shortly thereafter.

Is that an oval one? I have several round dutch ovens of theirs....

By the way, there is a Le Crueset outlet in Vacaville. I got an
amazing deal there a few years ago..got a largish pot for more than
$200 off..... They were having a special sale. It is one of my
favorite pieces now.

No, there are outlets in Vacaville. Maybe not the Calphalon outlet,
but there is a Le Creuset outlet there. Ask me how I know..LOL.

Yes. Bob has been wanting a large, oval one like that. Just other
"indulgences" that take center stage these days. You know, like water,
electric, gas, and ME! ;-)

Ask them when their sales are. I know they have regular sales in
both July and December, but they have other special sales at other
times. That is how I found that pot I mentioned.

Another favorite is the soup pot I got at one outlet.

Christine, wishing very much that she had an outlet near her.

Yes, it is. The only difference is the choice of colors and the logo. The
$49 Calphalon on sale was only in burgundy while the high priced brand had
at least six colors to choose from. You may also want to compare the Martha
Stewart line at Macy's and Batali line at BB & Beyond. They look identical
also, just different colors again. I'd guess they all come from the same
factory in China.

I bought all of my Le Creuset back in the 1970s and every piece is perfect.
Obviously things have changed since then. I don't think I'd buy it now.

As a datapoint, there were absolutely no imperfections in a piece that
Le Creuset sent us in the past year as a replacement.

Dunno what that means. Hardly any manufacturer is immune these
days to quality problems stemming from modern price pressures.

In my experience just about anything made in China is inferior
in quality. Price is their only advantage and of course, in the

Disregard my previous post. I'm getting my gourmet cookware brand
names mixed up. It was Calphalon that's $49. I thought there they
sold enameled cookware up in Vacaville and it turned out Calphalon
wasn't there.... I forgot about Le Creuset. They're both C's.

I'm making more attempt to buy ANYTHING BUT Chinese made items.
They're harder to find, for sure. Which just proves to me that this is a
huge problem.
Buying American is my first choice, and then globally. But China is
always my last choice, if I have one?

No, I've not but I'll look for it. The entire issue is of great concern
to me, and should be looked into by more of us.

Have you read the book "A Year Without China?" I can't remember the
author's name and it looks like I passed it on to my son. The couple
decided to go one year without buying anything from China. They
prayed that their computer did not need parts and that their coffee
maker and TV did not die. The biggest problem was children's toys.
All of the "neat" toys that all the kids had were made in China. Very
interesting read.

People (including me, I'm not pointing fingers) are always looking
for the lowest price for everything, how many times has it come
up how little food costs at the Asian market. If people want to
stop buying goods made in China, they're going to have to put
their money where their mouth is.

One must make a distinction between mainland China and Taiwan, as the
product from the latter range from decent to very high quality. Many
superior computer and electronic components are from companies based in
Taiwan.
