I was at home getting ready to drive my kids (ages 10 and 6) to school;
the bus drivers were on strike. My daughter called to me, "Mom, a plane hit the World Trade Center." I remember exactly what I said, the same stupid thing I said when the women from the Admitting Office called upstairs to Finance and said the space shuttle, Challenger, had exploded... "Oh no, surely not." I thought maybe she'd stumbled onto some sort of sci-fi flick on one of the cable channels. It was CNN. I debated keeping the kids at home. It was only a half day so I took them to school and rushed back home in time to see the strike on the north tower in real time. Saw the towers fall. And heard about the Pentagon. And the deaths of the first responders. And Flight 93, whose crew and passengers knew they were as good as dead and fought back and rode that plane into the ground rather than take a single extra soul with them. The sheer scope of the disaster and the blackhearted malice behind it were overwhelming. I packed a cooler, loaded up the dogs. I picked up my kids and a couple of their friends and took them to a local wilderness area to play in the woods and swim in the creek. When they piled into the van I grabbed a CD at random, stuck it in the player. It was "Live - Throwing Copper". Fine, whatever, anything but more news. But I can't listen to that album without remembering. If we'd just seen the start of WWIII, at least I could give them one perfect afternoon. Time enough later to witness the fears of the people who were supposed to keep them safe, to see the planes hit, to watch the towers fall again and again and again. On the way back home, with the smell of sunscreen, bug spray, sweaty kids and wet dogs in my nose, I turned the radio back on and we listened in silence to the shock and pain and terror of an outraged nation. This post was written by a friend who witnessed the attack on the towers firsthand: http://groups.google.com/group/alt.m...cdbf57bd?hl=en -or- http://tinyurl.com/gotham-burns |

If you can get kid goat, it's pretty tender - a lot like lamb but a bit leaner, IIRC. We didn't find this out until a long time later. There was a really good article published in our daily paper, I'll see if I can find it in their archives and post the URL Lynn in Fargo |

Lots of people were misinformed by the media and government. While some of those lies were later retracted, some people still think they are true. For instance, within a day of the attacks there were claims that the terrorists had snuck into the US from Canada the night before. Hillary Clinton repeated that lie a few months ago. They did not sneak in from Canada. They had been in the US for many months, and had arrived with passports and had visas. Look at the number of people who still think that Saddam was behind the attacks. Many people believed Bush's claims about Saddam having vast stores of WMDs. Worse yet, they not only still believe it but they think that their troops actually found them. Bush repeated the lie about Saddam trying to get Niger yellow cake, and when someone publicly exposed that lie the administration got its revenge by outing the man's wife as a CIA agent. The really sad thing here is that after the government sources and media aired their rumours they followed the route of urban legends. People started recounting them as first hand or second hand accounts. It is like the stories of a friend or friend of a friend who lived in a town house and heard noises in the attic which turned out to be illegal immigrants or a bunch of people from some ethnic group who had moved into the attics. |

What those people endured in their last moments is unimaginable to the rest of us , and thankfully so. There are, of course,]many, as your friend, who were so close to it that they became part of it themselves. Many neighborhood residences were lost, many area workers were caught up in it all. Some I know cannot easily speak of their experiences at all, while others seem to be comforted by being able to talk about it. To those of us here, who had our day to day living affected by it, by the very the nearness of it, the smell of it, the sight of it, the re-routing of all transportation in and out of and through the city, it was a rough time. Seeing armed National Guard all over was spooky. That went on for ages at the tunnels and bridges. Some of it is almost dream-like now. I still look over to the downtown skyline and think I'll see the towers. I have pictures of family and friends taken there, my favorite menorah, a ceramic NYC skyline, has the towers anchoring one side of it. I have a hand painted denim jacket from old, old disco days that has the towers outlined in rhinestones - having lived in the city for so long, a lot of things seem to have a representation of the towers connected with them. Before 9-11 it was all just "stuff," but now it is just different. Boron |
