And a synopsis: Over the past five years, Italy's biggest olive-oil brands have fallen steadily into Spanish hands. SOS Cuétara SA's July purchase of Bertolli, one of the world's best-known olive-oil labels, gave the Spanish food company control of half the Italian market and made it the world's undisputed leader in olive-oil sales. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1221...s_inside_today Ashby |

I wonder how long it will be before they get my favourite, Colavita (who's already started using Sp. Oil in its lower-end blends) |

You mentioned their Adobo seasoning, that's one I always have on hand, though I usually have the stuff for Adobo on hand. Their chick peas and black beans are always perfect too. And I like their lentils better than most brands. Less brown icky ones, a better color and size. |

I can't be a country snob when the oil tastes good. Thanks. :-) I'll have to try that brand some time. Sounds really good! |

I once did an informal tasting of the ones I could afford and this was clearly the winner. Plus, I like shape of the bottles - used to fill them with colored water and put them in the kitchen windows. It was easier when I lived in a mex/PR neighborhood. Harder to find here. Exploring some Arab places when I can get to them. Not really liking this bottle of Sultan brand. Smells too much like olives, tastes oily and a little bitter. Yeah, I know. How can "smells like olives" and "tastes oily" be bad for olive oil? Olive oil is a lot lke wine - of course, within reason, more expensive usually tastes better, but, even within price ranges, there is a very subjective matter of tastes. Also like wine, it is possible to go completly nuts. For me, almost any wine is better than no wine, any EVO is better than the organic lubricants sold at most grocery stores. Bulka |

I have recently been using canned black beans for thick, garlicky, cuminy soup. Instant gratification compared to the hours we have to wait for the dried ones to get soft. The salt content is high, but the other, positive nutrition in these things outweighs it. The way I make it, it really is more like a side dish or main dish, less like soup, because it is so thick. I love sprinkling the finished mess with cheddar and eating it by the bowl with corn chips. Mmm mmmm. It's like the cheap and easy fast food of beans. ![]() |
