Dimitri, in case I miss Charlie's reply (really heavy litigation load
right now - working miserable hours), would you email me at work?

it was a *way* lot more fun than Bill's legal forum :-(

I haven't talked to them today, but last I heard they and their house are
just fine. The fire was close but stayed across the valley from them. No
fire near Poway or the City now. The wind shifted and is now coming in off
the ocean. Higher humidity but it is blowing the fire east endangering all
there. The southern fire is 98% contained. The northern fire is partly
contained but heading up Mt. Palomar. The central fire is uncontroled and
seems to have a talent for finding populated areas.

I spoke with Katherine this afternoon. They are doing just fine after
a few anxious days. She said last night was the first good night sleep
they have had since Sunday.
They planned their house very well for their area, they have a cement
roof and the landscape is "firescaped" and the house is sprinklered
and they have a 10,000 gallon water tank, among other well thought out
building additions.
This does not lessen the anxiety about having to evacuate your home
but it sure hedges your bet on having something to come home to.
Katherine said their view has changed drastically and is truly
saddened by what they see.

Hello Everyone,

It was great to hear from so many people. We had a flames
from two sides, and saw the smoke from Ramona and Julian as well.
It took me a week to just have some energy back. My body doesn't
respond well to stress. We watched the fire come down the hills
into the Poway valley.(that is what poway means, from the native
american word for meeting of the valleys)David stayed awake all
that Sunday just watching and posting to you all. We watched one
house that was about 20,000 square feet glowing as the fire went
through and then past it. It was a huge glowing rectangle for
hours. Randy Jones, baseball player, built a beautiful house
on a hill just opposite us and we watched it go too.

The only thing that saved Poway from more destruction
was the Santa Ana winds only being one day. Then as Charlie
said the ocean breeze sent the winds east.

David took photos that he sent to our landscaper while
we watched the fire. He is going to do a talk on firescaping
with native plants. One of the houses left a very green belt
of iceplant behind, house all gone. It may have had wood shake
shingle roof, I don't know. Ours is concrete.

We were ready, but we didn't leave. Because we are
right in the middle of Poway, the winds would have had to
keep up another day. Our neighbor was in Scripps Ranch area
fighting the fire. He is also a paramedic. I was so worried
for him. He is safe and with his family now.

Are the McCormacks and the McLeods ok too?

The McCormack's are all fine. Evacuation on Sunday afternoon
was voluntary in our neighborhood, but at the second somewhat
urgent suggestion by the sheriff's dept. to do so, we did.
We were able to return the next morning. The fire burned
across Tooth Mountain and the hill behind the soccer park,
but at no time came closer to our home than 400 to 500 yards.
Our daughter's home at Lake Wohlford also survived.
