What's the best way to store russett potatoes? I know cool, dark & dry,
but not the fridge, is the best way (I think?) but that's not always possible where I live. TIA. Sky -- Ultra Ultimate Kitchen Rule - Use the Timer! Ultimate Kitchen Rule -- Cook's Choice |

It ends up being more economical than throwing out spoiled potatoes or turning them green in the fridge. -- Wayne Boatwright ******************************************* Date: Saturday, 09(IX)/27(XXVII)/08(MMVIII) ******************************************* Countdown till Veteran's Day 6wks 2dys 4hrs 55mins ******************************************* Cats must reset their human's alarm clock by walking on it. ******************************************* |

We keep ours in the bottom of the cardboard box used to accumulate paper for recycling. It's dark and dry but can never be cool in this desert climate LOL. They last about two to three weeks, which is long enough for them to get used up. |

CA High Desert, very dry and high-temp. I buy 6-10 Russets for baking, always store in the refrigerator "crisper drawer," and bake one about twice each week. I've never noticed any problem at all with this storage method. ....Picky |

I find the main condition that is important is dark, dry second, and cool third. Taters in the fridge just get flavorless. maxine in ri |

Actually they don't become flavorless, with cold the potato starch changes to sugar so they acquire a sweetness, not very desireable but a flavor nevertheless. When I find a great buy on potatoes in sizes more than I can use in a reasonable time I cook them as potato pudding/kugel/pancakes, etc. that freeze well. http://www.razzledazzlerecipes.com/c.../potatonik.htm |
