Its been a few years since I have been to SF for pleasure.

Late October we're spending a few days in San Francisco a block from Union
Square.

Hopefully I will not be driving but I will have my car there. I intend on
taking the Cable cars and/or Bart to travel around town.

Suggestions for Restaurants, side trips, and/or any other ideas are
gratefully accepted.

I am going to try not to buy out the Boudine bakery at the wharf and take 12
loaves back to my room - ;-)

Everything at the wharf (and pier 39) is an overpriced tourist trap.
Walk up towards the cannery and North Beach (which is still very
touristy but much better food). Better yet, spend on your food
money in Chinatown. No Engrish lessons necessary - just point and
grunt.

The wharf/pier is only good for people-watching. Even the scenery
is much better from other points in SF.

My recommendation:

Edinburgh Castle Pub for the fish & chips and cocktails.

Beautiful Bar!!!

I don't know the sexual preference nowadays. Call, if it matters.

It gets you *to* and *through* San Francisco. You have to rely on
city busses to get you any place useful or specific.

They also have a light rail system.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muni_Metro

They replaced the electric streetcars that you can
see in old movies of San Francisco.

One of my most pleasant memories of childhood
was when my parents would take the family up to
Chinatown, buy assortments of meat buns at
one or more bakeries, and just stroll around
window shopping. A few years ago when I tried
to recreate that experience, I wasn't careful
to make sure the buns and dumplings were hot.
I guess they sell a lot for reheating at home.
They weren't good cold.

If you really want a cheese store treat, head across the bay to
Berkeley, to The Cheese Board.

In fact, if you want a real foodie adventure, spend the day in the
East Bay, and go to Berkeley Bowl, and the Spanish Table.

In SF, go to the Ferry Plaza markets....

The F line is quite interesting. It has old streetcars from around
the world and San Francisco's own past.

Dimitri,

Try them, and let us know if it was as good as I remember

I'd love to revisit the place! Now where to get an Irish coffee, I knew the
place, just can't remember the name, dammit!

Best,

Andy

I've had very good meals at Farallon, just off Union Square. That might have
been because I always got the same waitress, and her recommendations were
PERFECT. Her name is Gwen, but I don't know if she still works there.

If you're an adventurous eater you might like Incanto. I've been meaning to
try it out for years, but haven't gotten there yet.

It was better 27 years ago. Now it's very commercialized, kinda
like Times Square.

sf,

Is that the place? I think we discussed it once. A tiny whole in the wall?

That's the place we talked about! Looking out the window, you can
watch the cable cars turn around with the Bay in the background.
