Default V8 Juice

Has anyone noticed a change in consistency in V8 Juice over the years?

It seems thinner to me now than it used to be.

No - and dh is a V8 addict of many years, so I guess he's a pretty
good judge. I can't stand the stuff myself. I just wish the stores
would stock more of the low sodium variety - they're the first to go.

Maybe it's just in my mind. I know that some people need or prefer the low
sodium variety, but I can't stand the taste. I do, however, like the Hot
and Spicy variety in addition to the regular one.

Not really, but I purchase the low sodium version. It's more expensive.

I like to serve it hot sometimes as a soup.

The only time I buy it is when I want to use it as a base for vegetable or
veggie-beef soup.

It also makes a killer base for chili.

Regular V8 seems the same to me. Low sodium tastes sweet - it's what I
should drink, but I just can't. I like the lemon stuff and I usually
add lemon or lime (and Worcestershire) to the regular, anyway. I
don't drink the hot/spicy stuff because the Worcestershire adds a more
complex flavor kick. I haven't tried the plus calcium V8, but maybe
you'd find it "thicker". Calcium fortified skim milk feels more like
whole milk to me, but calcium added OJ is kind of chalky. Having said
that, I'm a cheapskate and most of the time I buy the store brand at
half the price, especially if I'm going to cook with it.

I made a terrific "ratatouille" soup the other day. Vegan too! No
eggplant (yuk) but yellow summer squash, zuchinni, onion, bell
peppers and fresh green beans with mediterranean - type herbs and a
little olive oil. Fast and EZ.

Lynn in Fargo
also loves Clamato and Beefamato
There's "V8" canned soup in the grocery ad for this week!

Why would it be more expensive, I've never noticed any low sodium
products priced differently from the regular products... perhaps you
should shop elsewhere. V8 is way over priced anyway, as are all
tomato juices... it's very easy to make your own from tomato paste
(that's the base for all tomato juice), there is no salt added to any
brand of tomato paste. You can make a better tasting version by
tailoring the seasonings to your own liking - you can buy dehy
vegetables and make your own - cheap, you can also control the
viscosity. I never buy tomato juice (why carry those heavy cans/
bottles home), it's so simple to make it myself, and at less than half
the store price, all I need is a can opener and 30 seconds.

Did you know that V8 contains beet juice... I always have lots because
I like canned beets. I have dehy onions, bell pepper (red n' green),
parsley, powdered celery seed, carrots, celery too. But I don't try
to copy V8 exactly, I prefer to make a tomato vegetable juice to my
own taste, for one I like a bit of dillweed and garlic powder... I
like to add a few drops of hot sauce. a squeeze of fresh lemon, and
finish up with a few ounces of vodka.

To a glass of plain tomato juice add a tsp of canned tuna water and
it's darned close to Clamato.

I have most of the dehy veggie ingredients with my spices, I'm sure
most people who cook do... not gonna miss the lettuce and water cress
juice.

Sometimes we've had threads on likes and dislikes that don't make sense.
V-8 is a classic example for me. The thought of drinking it cold
makes me gag. The thought of using it for the broth in a vegetable soup
or a beef stew is delightful. I do that all the time.

Cabbage-tomato soup with V-8 is excellent.
Beef stew with onions, sweet potatoes, carrots, turnips and mushrooms in
V-8 base is another favorite around here.

Too much trouble... but thanks. ;-)
Too much salt too unless you are purchasing the "no salt added" beets.
I can get those here.

V-8 is more than just tomato juice.

Do you like cold tomato juice?

I don't care for cabbage combined with tomato except in stuffed cabbage
rolls. I do like V-8 as base for several things, though. A little bit in
stew, chili, things like that.

I like hot tomato sauce on pasta, and I like that dish cold the next
day. I like tomato juice heated as a base for soup and stew, but cold
tomato juice is back in the gack category. I said it didn't make sense.

It's an economy and ecology thing. It's still called V8 but it's
really only a four these days.

Ditto. :-)

V-8 is great used as a tomato "stock". Sometimes, when in the mood, I
just like it straight heated as a soup by itself.

I don't like the low sodium version at all. I bought it by mistake once,
and ended up pouring it down the drain. I also like either lemon or lime
and Worcestershire. I've bought the "plus calcium" and can't tell any
differencs, but then, I can't detect the calcium added to orange juice
either. I don't care for any store brand I've tried, and I really dislike
any of the juices made from concentrate. I usually buy Florida's Natural,
but I only buy it if it's on sale or "buy one get one free".

I'd sooner you put in the eggplant and left out the zuchinni! :-) I have
never really liked zuchini and I never buy it. The closest I've come to
enjoying it was in a zuchini chocolate cake. :-) I don't understand why I
don't like it since it's so similar to hellow summer squash, which I love.

I used to make "ratatouille" perhaps every other month (not the soup), but
for some reason quit making it. Well I know why, actually. I like it but
David wouldn't even look at it.

I used to have a great bloody mary recipe that was given to me by my boss
years ago. I can't remember most of the proportions, but I guess that's
pretty flexible.

I remember it starts out by taking a 48oz. can of V-8 Juice and pouring all
but 1 pint of it into a large pitcher. Then adding a 1 pint of vodka. The
other additions were Worcestershire sauce, horseradish, Tobasco sauce,
celery salt, and a smidge of onion powder and freshly ground black pepper.

We wouldl often store this in the freezer to make a slush. Never had any
that tasted better.

I bought it once, it was horrible! I couldn't figure out why it
was so bad, but I gather they add stuff to it so you won't
miss the salt. Believe me, just take out the salt. Blech!

Many products have been diluted to increase revenues... I guess
Campbell's was too embarrassed to make those teensy cans even smaller
so they just added more water. I don't know why anyone buys tomato
juice of any variety when it is so simple to make it oneself. I found
that one 6 oz can of tomato paste with 26 ounces of water makes a
quart of perfect tomato juice, adjust water however you like... just
add a pinch of salt, and whatever flavors you like... I shake mine up
in a quart Hellman's jar... glad I saved all those glass ones. When I
get a yen for a bloody mary I always have tomato juice because I
always have a couple dozen cans of paste. All tomato juice begins as
tomato concentrate (paste)... do yoose really think the tomato juice
purveyers are so dumb as to ship water. Sacramento Tomato Juice says
right at their web site faq how their tomato juice is made from
paste. You can't squeeze tomatoes and get what folks call tomato
juice, and tomato juice won't taste like what folks call tomato juice
if it's made from cooked tomatoes. Tomato paste is very minimally
heated, the water is removed by a vacuum process using very expensive
equipment... pretty much the same as OJ concentrate is made.

Doesnt do much for me either - but the bottles it comes in make the best
milk (I get it fresh here) and juice/water bottles - better than any
other bottle I can find to buy

Dimitri, it looks as though it's just you and me that detect a difference.
Does that mean that we're more discerning? :-)

Damn, I was hoping it was going to be 5, 6, 7 and 8. I didn't like those
as well.

Those are pretty nice bottles. There is an artesian well about 15 miles
from my house out in the desert. I fill as many bottles as I have with the
water for drinking purposes.

It needs shaking very well before serving. I remove about 1/4 cup
from the bottle into a glass, recap the bottle and shake. Then I add
back that small amount and shake again. About the sodium.....I buy
the "Essential Antioxidant" formula and it has less salt than the
"regular" but enough to make it palateable. The "no sodium" V-8 is
awful.

Really. I dislike getting drunk! I've been staggering sick drunk twice
in my life back in my 20's. I learned from that.

What fun is throwing up for 2 hours and getting the bed spins? <shudder>
I don't understand people that do that every weekend for "fun"...

I don't drink tomato juice unless there's vodka in it.... do you
remember a product called Snappy Tom? Is it still produced?

Heh. In Australia, we have Snappy Tom... but it's not something you'd
drink (cat food) http://www.snappytom.com.au/

It has not changed, from what I can tell. It still has so much metal in it
it sets my teeth on edge.

I do shake it well, but I still don't think it's as thick as it used to be.
