Default First Day of the Best Diet Ever

Because one member of our family has high cholesterol and blood pressure, we
have decided to get most of the starchy, fatty, processed stuff out of the
house so that we can fill the larder with fresh, whole, fiber-rich, homemade
food. (!)

By consensus, we decided yesterday was the first day of the diet, in that
first we needed to get rid of the tempting bad stuff. And who wastes food?

I had two broiled, split ,bun-length hot dogs with finely chopped onions, a
thin line of ketchup, relish, and a load of melted shredded cheddar on top.
(I toasted the bud while melting the cheese.

I could not move after the second one. I was like a snake that just ate a
wildebeest.

We still have stuff left, I am thinking there may have to be a second day of
this type.

Sounds like fun. :-)

Over the years I have also changed my diet. I stopped cooking starches,
like potatoes, rice or pasta, unless we have company. Everything else
is the same, although I do eat more vegetables to take the place of the
starch. If I am traveling, I eat whatever I want. Woo-hoo!

This is something we are doing. I just bought a bag of Yukon Gold, and only
used three in a giant pot of soup, so I have to do something with them.
There's also a box of whole wheat rotini and a couple of pounds of rice.

You are eating pretty much the way we will eat until my loved one's numbers
go down. It is only recently that I began buying starchy stuff again, so it
should not be too hard. I am addicted to raw red peppers and cucumbers with
ranch dip made with light sour cream. It's so much better than the salty,
fatty, crappy alternatives like potato chips, corn chips, and snack
crackers. I wish he liked fish more. If I have a hunk of broiled salmon or
grouper and some steamed broc, I am pretty much happy. He likes *flounder*
which I always think of as the fish people eat who really don't like fish.
And whatever fish it is has to be fried for him.

I might be on the same when my results come back. I had my first bloodwork
in years done, cholesterol and BG included. When it comes back, I'm sure
I'm going to have to make some changes. Then no more of the wonderful pasta
dishes I've been making lately. ;( I'll be looking for healthy recipes
from you and others.

I hope you get a good report, Cheryl. Too much of it appears to be
hereditary. While it is true that diet and exercise matter, we all eat
pretty much the same things in this house, give or take a few things, and
don't do much in the way of exercise, and my husband's best cholesterol
report, though he is nearly a decade younger than I am, was about the same
as the worst I have ever had. I think I forgot to fast for that one, even.

I know I've said this before, but my partner got his numbers completely
under control (that is, to non-diabetic levels) without giving up carbs.
If anyone wants to talk about it offgroup, let me know.

it's a well-known fact that, like food consumed while standing up in front
of the refrigerator, food consumed while on vacation has no calories.

I wouldn't mind or consider it off-topic to discuss it here, unless
there are items you're not supposed to share with anyone not on the
program or something.

Most diabetic diets require a certain amount of carbohydrates, but
recommend whole grain, high-fiber, and sometimes low-glycemic ones.

It's surprising how many high-fiber foods are really delicious. I don't go
in for a lot of grainy stuff, but I love raw and nearly raw vegetables. When
I first changed my diet to cut back on processed foods and simple carbs, I
just added delicious things from the fiber category. (A psychological tactic
to keep the five year old in me from rebelling against the idea of "can't
have.") It worked great because I felt like I had extra goodies and there
was no room for the bad stuff.
