The side shelves on my Weber finally bit the dust. My grill is old,
it has the wooden slat shelves, the wood was so rotten that ther ewas no way to reattach with new screws. The new shelves are some sort of plastic. I called Weber and they wanted $30 for each side shelf in plastic.... with the bottom shelf and the swing-up shelf they wanted just under $200 + shipping... I said phooey on that. For under $3 worth of treated wood lumber from Lowes I sawed and replaced the slats on both side shelves in under an hour (there was nothing wrong with the metal brackets), I had to add a few screws as some of teh originals had fallen out and are lost... that's how I realized there was a problem, I noticed a couple of screw on teh ground. Look how rotten the old slats: http://i35.tinypic.com/11immxk.jpg Better than new: http://i36.tinypic.com/imueya.jpg Been feeding my handsome boy and his twin sister since they were tiny fawns, this is their third year: http://i37.tinypic.com/157ggn9.jpg http://i36.tinypic.com/6s71on.jpg |

Just kidding! Nice job on the Weber. We have a resident deer herd also but they don't get that close. |

I have a job to do to take apart an old gas grill so I can put it out for the metal pickup. It's beyond the type of repair that Sheldon did. |

Nice job. How high a fence does it take to keep the deer out of your garden? When we lived in New England we had a 50x150 foot garden in the field behind our house so we were able to grow almost everything in enough volume to share with the critters. One year the woodchucks got greedy in the corn so the following year we built a 6 foot high wire fence around the corn area. To our surprise, they soon tunneled their way under the fence into the very middle of the corn rows. My husband and a neighbor solved the problem with two lawn chairs, a hose, beer, and two shotguns. They sat in the chairs, flooded the tunnels from the far side with the hose, drank the beer, and fired the guns as the ugly critters came out into the corn. (For those who have never seen one, a woodchuck looks exactly like a gigantic rat.) We still found whole corn stalks with the corn stripped off, abandoned in the field and nearby woods that winter. Raccoons. Somehow we didn't mind sharing the crop with them. Raccoons are cute and very smart. gloria p |

One reason we went into wildlife rescue is because we could always count on critters to be just what they were... We expected to get clawed and bit. <g> Deer will be deer.
