as you may recall, this thread started with morrow's tale of heroically
stiffing a waiter who had the audacity to wear an obama tie or some such. well it was with great interest i read this blog post the other night: At any rate, I received the following email on one of my ¡§conservative¡¨ email lists the other day: Today on my way to lunch I passed a homeless guy with a sign that read "Vote Obama, I need the money." I laughed. Once in the restaurant my server had on a "Obama 08" tie, again I laughed as he had given away his political preference - just imagine the coincidence. When the bill came I decided not to tip the server and explained to him that I was exploring the Obama redistribution of wealth concept. He stood there in disbelief while I told him that I was going to redistribute his tip to someone who I deemed more in need¡Xthe homeless guy outside. The server angrily stormed from my sight. I went outside, gave the homeless guy $10 and told him to thank the server inside as I ¡¥ve decided he could use the money more. The homeless guy was grateful. At the end of my rather unscientific redistribution experiment I realized the homeless guy was grateful for the money he did not earn, but the waiter was pretty angry that I gave away the money he did earn even though the actual recipient needed money more. I guess redistribution of wealth is an easier thing to swallow in concept than in practical application. In and of itself, no big deal. The kind of thing that passes as conservative humor, and something that I am sure has ricocheted around right-wing blogs and email lists everywhere. However, listen to Nicole Wallace, one of the chief McCain flaks, today on NPR. Start paying attention at around 3:35 in the interview: Listen, you go into a restaurant and instead of leaving a tip, you stiff the waitress and give it to the homeless person outside, it is a noble thing to do, it is spreading money earned by that waitress and giving it someone outside. Sound familiar? <http://www.balloon-juice.com/?p=13082> ....so, evidently morrow is either the famous (although unnamed) leader of a movement, or a bald-faced liar. gosh, i wonder which? your pal, blake |

Their reaction is clearly a case of mote...beam. They are easy to take offense at even the slightest suggestion of disagreement with their position and they perceive insults everywhere. But then again they were all trained as bullies at the feet of Bill Oh, Really? and Sean Fannipak. Their commonly shared duplicity knew no bounds. But their day is over and they can caterwaul all they want. Next on the agenda, boot Harper. The man has been an embarassment to Canadians for the last three years. Pretty good troll, eh, blake...??? I at least thought *you* of all peeps would bother to check out my "story" on snopes or even just do a simple google. I in fact heard Don Wade, a conservative morning talk show host here on WLS radio in Chicago first tell it...: http://www.wlsam.com/sectional.asp?id=17450 "About Don Wade & Roma Since 1985 DON WADE and ROMA, the dynamic duo of WLS, have had the greatest job in the world. They get paid to distill all the news of the day and bring it to their friends, WLS listeners all over Chicagoland and the world (via the internet). They are the longest running Morning Drive Team in Chicago. WARNING: DON and ROMA are addictive! Few side effects. No prescription necessary. Their fast-paced dialogue with local or national newsmakers, whether on politics, entertainment, business, or life, provides the inside story on hot issues. Listeners leap in with their opinions and sparkling conversation. Their many awards (stuffed in a storage box somewhere) include Talker Magazine's Heavy Hitter 100, Local Radio Legends of America, & the Marconi Award. But the only award that matters to them is having YOU chose to listen each morning! DON WADE is invariably passionate, witty, usually conservative, and always opinionated about the political and social issues of the day. He thrives on exposing and debunking the media bias and spin which distort the world around us. He and his co-host ROMA challenge listeners with provocative scrutiny, laughter, and debate of everything from the profound to the mundane. An all-American patriot, DON is unafraid to challenge movers and shakers, no matter what their political leaning. DON is proud of being fired from more radio stations than he can count. Why? Because his opinions got him in trouble. When he found a home at WLS in 1985 he found a place where his opinions counted. WLS Talk radio became the perfect vehicle for DON's rapier dissection of our crazy world--with politics, celebrities, and the media as favorite targets. Born in New York City, DON attended William & Mary and graduated from Boston University. In both prep school and college he worked on campus radio stations. His rock-and-roll radio DJ jobs hop-scotched the country from Philadelphia to Seattle, Buffalo to Dallas, Denver to Chicago. Other than working in a box factory one summer, he has always been a radio "star." In other words, he's never had a real job. A microphone is his life. His favorite celebrity interviews are the Beatles--on their American tours, in Nice, France, & in Obertauern, Austria. In fact, they gave DON a cameo role in the Beatles movie HELP. (Don't blink!) In contrast, ROMA (aka: The Voice of Reason) provides the thoughtful balance that drives DON mad. They are a team at home as well as at work and have been married since 1979. They walk to the beat of two different drums and yet are happy together 24/7. ROMA is the daughter of an equally diverse couple. Her father was a minister, orphaned at 11, who picked cotton in North Carolina to support his siblings and work his way through Wake Forest. Her mother was a Duke University mathematics and physics PhD honored by the Smithsonian for her accomplishments. ROMA earned a BA and MA from Baylor and completed all coursework for her PhD in English literature at WSU in WA. While on sabbatical writing her dissertation, she ran into DON WADE who insisted on messing up her career path. It took him over a year to convince her she needed him in her life. Slow, but relentless. ROMA has taught university, community college, high school and even grade school gifted children. She is a self-taught home remodeler turned General Contractor who loves steel-toed boots, sledge hammers and power tools for Christmas. Demolition is her favorite way to vent. She has taught kitchen remodeling and deck building seminars for local Chicago lumberyards. Trained to teach yoga and meditation, ROMA is also a self-professed health nut and lover of all things spiritual & philosophical. She's the compassionate one. DON and ROMA's terrific kids, HUNTER & HEATHER, & Hunter's bride MARGY are their greatest pride and joy. HUNTER is a US Marine LT COL completing his Master's Degree at Industrial College of the Armed Forces at Fort McNair in DC. He recently completed 4 Iraq & Afghanistan tours. HUNTER is a former Blue Angel who flew in the Chicago Air Show in 2000. HUNTER was USMC Tailhooker of the Year 2007, and the F/18 hornet squadron he commanded, the legendary Red Devils VMFA 232, won Top Fighter Squadron 2007. He is a Glenbrook South High School and Illinois State University grad. HEATHER is a full-time Global Event Planning Officer for CITI in New York City; lives on the upper east side; and in her "spare time", is completing her second & final year in the MBA Executive program at NYU---one of the top MBA programs in the US. Heather loves the challenge of tackling such a competitive program while holding down a demanding career in banking. She's studying nights and weekends to compete. She went to New Trier High School and graduated with honors from the University of Washington in Seattle. Dr. Margy is a Surgical Dermatologist in the Alexandria, Virginia area. She is also retained as a Dermatogical-Surgeon-on-Leave for Scripps Medical in San Diego. She attended the University of Texas, Texas A & M, and Bethesda & Balboa Medical Schools and is a former Commander in the US Navy. She almost outranked Hunter in the military and she definitely outranks him in their home. Margy also happens to be the best cook in the entire family. Life is sweet for all of them. DON and ROMA know they are richly blessed indeed!" </> Maybe I'll email your "discovery" to him and he'll mention in on his show. If he mentions your name you'll be FAMOUS, blake...!!! :-) -- Best Greg " I find Greg Morrow lowbrow, witless, and obnoxious. I thought that at least Steve Sqwertz would "catch it in the bud" but that didn't happen... Honestly, some of the "enlightened" posters like BLAKE here are maybe not so "crafty" after all...blake was taken in hook, line, and sinker (we KNOW that O' Feel Up is a dope, lol). My "Beast" is a V8 Trailblazer EXT with a 25.6 gallon tank. Bob and I put 30,000 on that vehicle in one year alone. He has a car for his commute back and forth to work. We log a LOT of recreational miles. Any price breaks we get are quite welcome! I think the highest I paid for gas this summer was $4.91/gal. as I was traveling from here to Oklahoma. I didn't see a decent price drop till I stopped in Sedona, AZ. I was THRILLED to get it for $4.19. Actually, I was coasting into town on fumes (really, I was!) So I would have given 10 times that much just to put fuel in the tank. It's rather ominous when you are on a twisty two-lane highway in the mountains, traffic backs up about five miles outside of town because of construction, the "ding" sounds on the low-fuel gauge with the bright orange light, and THEN on the radio comes Jackson Browne singing "Runnin' on Empty." Yes, that really happened. --Lin |

Batshit refers to rationality. Looking at the thread trees I'm going to delete after I post this you and a few others have lost your minds. It's not what you say or if you can back it up, but how many times you've said it in a _cooking_ group. I too get dragged into OT threads but never 100's of posts. Obama won. Be happy. Myself and most of my circle of friends didn't vote for him, but we all seem to be happy for the historic event that took place. I even went out Wednesday morning to get a paper to put in the time capsule Louise has been working on for over 30 years. The city I live in didn't get trashed in the celebration and for that I'm proud to live in Chicago. I'm also proud to be white. Judging by the "look" of the crowd we've overcome prejudice far more than I ever thought I'd see in my lifetime. And judging by the exit polls is seems we're ahead of some others. But a few things did sadden me Tuesday night. Actually one that surprised me was I was bummed I hadn't jumped on a bus and gone to Grant park. It looked like a pretty friggin good party and it was so close. I had two TV's going and jumped between channels. The local cable channel (CLTV) had a different style of interviews than the rest. The interviewed "consultants" were mostly young first time voters who had sucked up a bit to much of the "pixie dust" that mayor Daley had dropped from the choppers above and they all seemed to think their life was going to be much better in the morning. Some were so hopped up they couldn't put a thought together. What saddens me is when they woke up from the "pixie dust" buzz they realized nothing was different for them. You can continue your batshit ranting with 100's of OT posts about how much you hate Bush and capitalism, but luckily as of Tuesday 47% of us don't agree with your blanket statements. During the time you and others are waiting for the magic wand to fix things and your government check to come the rest of us are scrambling to get our own. We sold a wonderful house for 75 grand less than it was appraised for last summer. This year our funds have dropped more than you probably "make" in a year. Yet you and your type want to take even more of what we've worked for and give it to someone else? Sorry blake, but that's batshit. I could ramble on even more but I see a few food threads that interest me so I'll catch up with you there if you still read those. Lou |

Of course Louisiana and Texas have beau coup refineries too. You've got a few in your area Becca and we have two good sized refineries here in SW LA and 54 miles away in Beaumont, TX is another very large one. Transportation costs are less if you're actually near the production of the motor fuel. |

I drove within shouting distance of two big refineries, and gas prices were always higher than anywhere else. California not only produces some oil, but has lots of refineries (it's on the ocean, so shipping for crude is easier), but our gas prices are almost always very high. -- Dan Abel Petaluma, California USA |

Lots of people own it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ExxonMobil "The Exxon Mobil Corporation, or ExxonMobil, is an American oil and gas corporation and a direct descendant of John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil company.[3] Formed on November 30, 1999, by the merger of Exxon and Mobil, ExxonMobil is the world's largest company by revenue, at $404.5 billion for the fiscal year of 2007, having interchanged this status with Wal-Mart in recent years, as oil prices have fluctuated. It is also the largest publicly held corporation by market capitalization, at $501.17 billion on April 18, 2008.[4] Exxon's reserves were 72 billion oil-equivalent barrels at the end of 2007 and, at current rates of production, are expected to last over 14 years.[5] While it is the largest of the six oil supermajors[6] with daily production of 4.18 million BOE (barrels of oil equivalent) in 2007[7], this is only approximately 3% of world production and ExxonMobil's daily production is surpassed by several of the largest state-owned petroleum companies.[8] When ranked by oil and gas reserves it is 14th in the world with less than 1% of the total. [9] [10] Currently, the company ranks #1 in the world in net income, which was almost $40 billion last year." > Ever heard off CALPERS? The teachers have their own retirement system: http://www.calstrs.com/Investments/index.aspx "CalSTRS is the nation's second largest public pension fund with assets totaling just over $147 billion as of September 30, 2008. The investment portfolio is broadly diversified into six asset categories." For the CA state employees and retirees, CALPERS is 90% funded. I'm not too worried about my retirement money. The point is that Enron already has some money. Hopefully you figured it out quicker than I did. I got a BA in economics before I figured out that it was flawed from the beginning. Actually, though, there are other fields that study human relations (sociology, politics and psychology), so economics just assumes away everything that is important, and draws conclusions based on leaving out the most important factors. Q: What do you get when you line up 1000 economists end to end? A: 1000 different opinions! -- Dan Abel Petaluma, California USA |

Some gays I know actually WORK for a living, have businesses, etc. and are *very* wary of the possible ramifications of economic legislation that might be passed by Obama and a Democratic Congress... [that said, McCain and Obama were both fairly terrible choices...McCain was too old and the only thing Obama has ever done is run for POTUS...] Personally speaking, I am also an advocate of a strong Israel, and some of the characters (Rashid Khalidi...) that Obama has consorted with are pretty distasteful in this regard. I also have to question the integrity of someone who attended a church for 20 years (not to mention that the pastor married him and baptised his children) and professed "ignorance" when it came out that his pastor (Rev. Wright) was promulgating nutty ideas, referring to whites as "blue - eyed" devils, saying 9/11 was a Zionist plot, saying that the US was an evil blot upon the world, etc. Obama is a direct product of the *very* corrupt Illinois Democratic political machine... And I find it "interesting" that the oft - touted *** - liberal "rainbow" does *not* include *any* room for differing views... I got sick of the "*** community" that I was supposedly a "member" of, believe me, I see up close and every day how truly fvcked - up it can be. Their leaders put themselves up on a pedestal and declaim that they are "superior" to mere ordinary mortals. They aren't, like many leftists and liberals they are simply immature and are living in an advanced state of adolescence...too much "pixie dust" (to borrow Lou's phrase in the "Obamanomics..." thread) in their eyes. Lastly, don't kid yourself about the direction that Obama will probably take. Look who he has appointed his Chief of Staff...Rahm Emanuel is no friend of the "little man", he was Clinton's point man on NAFTA, "ending welfare as we know it", etc. Obama and the Dems are just as tied to big money and corporate influence as any establishment politician has ever been, I just hope he doesn't screw up. Oh, and speaking of "***", check out what MA Rep. Barney Frank's boyfriend does for a living... Sleep well...!!! :-) PS: Out of the 200 or so candidates on my Chicago ballot, 198 I voted for were _Democratic_, and that includes Rahm Emanuel. Hopefully he'll bring some of that federal dough to Chicago and Illinois, a state that with gross Democratic mis - management and corruption on the state level is now virtually at a Third World level. So see, I _did_ vote majority Democratic, hope that makes blake and others here happy, BWA...!!! -- Best Greg |

Q: How many liberal economists does it take to change a lightbulb? A: None. They all go to the bar and let the invisible hand take care of it. ======== Q: How many liberal economists does it take to screw in a lightbulb? A: Two, but darned if I know how they got in there... ======== Three econometricians went out hunting, and came across a large deer. The first econometrician fired, but missed, by a meter to the left. The second econometrician fired, but also missed, by a meter to the right. The third econometrician didn't fire, but shouted in triumph, "We got it! We got it!" -- “Capitalism is the astounding belief that the most wickedest of men will do the most wickedest of things for the greatest good of everyone.” - John Maynard Keynes |
