Default Ham Hocks and Beans

Made a crockpotful Saturday. Had to compel the kids to eat it - they
just don't know what's good. I ate a big bowl every other day since
until it was gone. And here's the kicker - NO MAJOR BOWEL MALFUNCTION
<--- that's what I'm proud of.

You had to match that up with a good batch of cornbread, right?

Navy, or white?

Is the recipe anything like this?:

> 1 1/2 pounds butt end of ham
> 8 cups cold water
> 2 cups celery, diced

Add fresh water and cook until beans are tender. Cover ham with cold
water, cover and cook until tender, about 2 1/2 hours. Skim fat from
broth and add the drained beans, celery, onion, and potatoes. Cook until
vegetables are tender, about 20 minutes. Add the tomatoes and parsley
and simmer about 10 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.

Pre-packaged 15 bean combo. There were a couple beans in there I
didn't recognize, but there were pinto, black, white, red, navy, split
pea, giant white lima-type bean, etc.

The main problem I have with it is that disgusting "hock." ;-)
(((Shudder))) I've just never cared for the flavor. I'm not a big
bean eater anyway (my mom always made hers with navy beans, and the
recipe you posted is similar to hers, sans tomatoes.)

One of those dishes I'll never try.......

and this is actually one of those cases where I'll extend it further-
if I hang out with someone socially and it comes to my attention that
they have ever tried this dish, I might have to stop interacting with
them socially.

I'd rather do this in real life, rather than with a ham hock. Sheesh.

I'm with you. Ham hocks are greasy and have a really unpleasant flavor to
me. (I tried making navy bean soup this way when in college.)

I use a nice thick ham steak, cutting it into chunks and browning them, then
putting them in the soup the last hour or so, when the beans are just about
done. It's great.

I'm not a big
bean eater anyway (my mom always made hers with navy beans, and the
recipe you posted is similar to hers, sans tomatoes.)

It's getting to be winter and I already bought more great northerns so
I'll soon be making another batch, and I still have a bagful of those
collards from my garden in the freezer... I'd be happy for you to
check out my pork but you'll have to travel to Noo Yawk.

I prefer using ham shanks. Just as much flavor and they have some
good meat on them.

Gotta have piping hot cornbread baked in a cast-iron skillet too!

It's *bean* soup... not supposed to have a lot of meat... you want
meat bake a ham. Hocks make good soup because they add a lot of
gelatine.

He didn't say he was making bean soup. That's your assumption.

I use mostly black soy beans. They are lower in carbs.
