<grin> Cute.

I seem to remember some talk about White Castle here before, but cannot
remember if the general consensus was that they're good, bad or ugly.
Do you know? (Not a brand I've seen here).

LOL! At least one of our cats would do this!

BTW, when is your mother’s surgery scheduled, Jill? Please keep us
informed.

I am not fond of the frozen ones, but I used to live in an area where their
fast food stores were common. They are unique in the world of hamburgers
and liking or disliking them is very subjective. When you have a taste for
a White Castle, nothing else will do.

They are *very* thin meat patties that are steam-grilled on top of a bit of
chopped onion. Choice of condiments are mustard, pickle, tomato catsup.
They can also be had with cheese. They are quite small…4-5 make a meal.

They did the surgery rather late last night (which struck me as odd). They
did a spinal thing to as if she was having a baby to block her pain. What's
that called? She's in ICU now and they said she's asleep. Her blood
pressure was high but they're treating that and she's getting pain
medication. I'll be going over to see her in a couple of hours.

An epidural? Glad to know the surgery is over. I’m sure they’re taking
very good care with her and an equal measure of caution due to her age.
Thanks for the update. I’m sure things will go well going forward. You’re
a good daughter, Jill.

Oh, they're pretty bad. It's a northern US chain of "burger joints" that
somehow managed to get their stuff packaged and sold as frozen. Tiny
hamburgers with minced onions on them. I guess that's their claim to fame.

Funny though, because Persia actually stole a REAL cheeseburger from me once
when I'd grilled some outside. I stepped away for 30 seconds to grab a
napkin, came back... I had a bun and no burger. Persia, you wench! Good
thing I'd grilled four of them. LOL

No idea, Jean. It was practically 6PM before they got her into the
operating room yesterday. She's in ICU now.

Yes! An epidural! I couldn't think of the term. According to Steve Wertz I
shouldn't even be cooking for myself since she's in the hospital. I suppose
I should order a flail and start whipping myself. Not like I haven't
totally given up my life to take care of her.

I've arranged for hospice care to come in and help once she gets back home.
I'm arranging for all the medical equipment and so on.

I hope her recover is not problematic. I am sorry she and you

White Castle burgers are no worse than other mystery meat fast food
burgers. I've eaten them on occasion, and because there was a store
located around the corner from where I worked in New Hyde Park, LI
we'd sometime send out for some for lunch... but this was back in the
early '70s and I haven't indulged since, I assume they are still the
same, a tiny square burger on a very soggy bun. Their claim to fame
is that they were the very first fast food enterprise and that their
burgers have holes like a saltine cracker to facilitate cooking, they
are cooked with steam and are not flipped.

I've no idea about the frozen ones, never indulged, but I'd not be
surprised if they're lousy, how good can any frozen fast food burger
be.

They carry a lot of fond childhood memories for a LOT of people. They
used to sell them at the drive in theatre, when there was such a thing
before vandals ruined it for everybody. :-(

They are disgustingly delicious. <g>

Drive-ins came back in my area. There is an evil family owned operation
about 20 minutes from here. They have good quality screens and
projectors (added the second last year) and use an FM modulator for the
sound. They have hand cut fries and good quality burgers at family
prices and show first run flicks. They rent out the lot for a flea
market on Sundays.

Hay Jill, you gotta laugh, it stops you crying sometimes!
Hope you and your Mum are both okay. My good thoughts are winging themselves

That's funny, I always thought they were in the South US!

http://www.whitecastle.com/_pages/Locate.asp

I guess it depends a little on whether one considers TN to be south or
north. Definitely they aren't out West where I live.

Not so much if the surgeon/s were busy with other scheduled stuff
earlier in the day or in the daytime hours to come.

Having lived south of the Mason-Dixon line for the last 30 years I can tell
you I never saw a White Castle down there. Krystal, absolutely. Pretty much
the same thing. Tiny steamed burgers on square buns.

They are ugly, and very good. They are one of only two fast-food places
I will go on my own initiative (the other is Popeye's).

If you didn't grow up with them, you likely wouldn't stand them. Even
some who did can't.

Now you know perfectly good and well that the only "on topic" discussion of
a cat in a food ng would *have* to involve a nice, hot wok. (Didn't
want you to be disappointed.)

I'd have been disappointed if you hadn't suggested the wok boli! LOL

I've never seen them either, but I generally don't look at prepared
frozen foods. Here's the site, and where it says they sell the frozen:

http://www.whitecastle.com/_pages/re...ate=California

San Francisco

Albertson's
Bell Air
Food Maxx
Food Source
Nob Hill
Raley's
Ralphs/Cala/Bell/Food Co. Markets
Safeway
Save Mart
Scolari's
Walgreens

The only place I've heard about White Castle burgers is here in rfc.
I can't remember ever seeing it in the frozen food section of the
grocery stores I shop at. It's pretty much region specific, unless
you live in an area where there are enough homesick white castle
lovers to make a profit by selling them frozen. Vernor's ginger ale
can be found, however (don't even ask - it's another regional thing).

Once upon a time, maybe 60 or 65 years ago, White Castle made the best
burgers in town. (Kansas City, MO) The stores were little castle
shaped buildings, painted white, with no interior seating. The
burgers were 5 cents each or 6 for a quarter. Dads used to drive us
kids over to the one near The Plaza in KC and buy six burgers in a
bag, come back out to the car and we'd eat in the car. Best burgers
I've ever had.

About 20 years ago on a trip back home (we live in California now) we
stopped by a White Castle hamburger joint which looked like any other
fast food place. The burgers were small, square and would take about
six of them to make one meal. Not very good. They have an odd taste
that isn't bad, but not as good as almost any fast food hamburger you
care to name.

According to White Castle’s website, their frozen products are available at
the following stores in the San Francisco area:

Albertson's
Bell Air
Food Maxx
Food Source
Nob Hill
Raley's
Ralphs/Cala/Bell/Food Co. Markets
Safeway
Save Mart
Scolari's
Walgreens
*

Their frozen products are also widely avaialble in the Phoenix area.

Their restaurants are in 11 midwestern/eastern states. There were many in
Ohio when I lived there.

Vernor’s was sold in practically every store in the Cleveland area.

To begin with, *most* of those stores don't have locations in the city
of san francisco. The stores that are here, and *I've* shopped at -
don't carry White Castle burgers. I can safely say no Safeway I've
shopped in sells White Castle. I'd remember that! Sara Lee,
Stouffers... White Castle. Nope.

Maybe people in the burbs or woods drive miles to a grocery store.
Not me, I travel blocks. Bell Air and Scolari's are a big HUH to me.
Everything except Bell, Albertson's (isn't it back to being called
Lucky's now?) and Safeway are known. If there's even *one* of the
others here, it's not on my shopping path and I haven't seen White
Castle in any of the of them.

I was a little suspicious. They only had two locations in California,
LA/San Diego and San Francisco.

That's why McCain lost, he didn't have a kitty... in the US more
people have pet cats than dogs, in fact more people have cats for pets
than all those who voted. Had I run for President my Jilly would have
won every state.

All kittys are cute but my Jilly is the winner, she's the cutest...
she's also the smartest:

I've got like five pix of her already, Sheldon, when she pops up on my
screensaver I always smile. Now I'll have another to add to my "Jilly
collection"...

I'm sorry that Missy passed on, Michael, but knowing you you'll go out and
adopt like five more pets...

Cute, but makes me sad too. I lost my black kitty of 19-1/2 this weekend.
I know she couldn't stay with me forever but.....
