Considering the alternatives and the predecessor why not? Elections

I knew she was sick, but I'd not heard that she died... Bummer. :-(
Puts a negative spin on the beginning of his new career. He did love her.

He has my condolences. Anyone know if there is a place to send cards?

I think a lot of people are missing exactly that point.
They probably did not pay attention in Government class in high school
and/or college.

The really sad thing is you never heard all those right-wingers complain
about all the rights that got taken away by the Patriot Act.

I am not claiming what might happen but interesting thinks could happen.
The president on his own can't do those (and other) things but consider
that 2009 will begin with both houses of Congress and the president all
from the same party. That removes part of the check and balance designed
into our system of government.

I *don't* want cooperation in government and I think it is important
when different branches dog each other which is the design of our system.

Additionally, it wasn't the Dems who invoked the loss of
freedoms we've experienced since 9/11.

Freedom of speech and talk radio are Dem strengths.

Good for you.

I had to vote absentee due to a move.

I understand # 4 daughter replaced me being # 1 in line.

Thanks for that, we live in a pretty good place...

When I voted yesterday here in Chicago at the Methodist church down the
street two of the poll judges were an elegantly - dressed and kindly elderly
(80+) Jewish couple (I had seem them around in the nabe before). When I put
my ballot in the machine there was a minor snafu (I had over - voted for
judges, no big deal); the gentleman came over to assist me. I said, "Boy, I
love to vote, I even vote for the elementary school board candidates and I
don't even have kids" to which he replied, "Good for you!". I then said,
"It's a great day, America is a pretty good place after all...". He
gestured to his wife and said, "We know, we came from Germany...".

My polling place here in my busy Chicawgo nabe was virtually empty, I was in
and out in no time c. 4:00PM. There had been long lines at the local branch
library when I tried to vote last week...

The folks said there had a been a big rush when they opened, but nothing out
of the ordinary...some one third of voters in Chicagoland had already voted
early.

I am SO glad the campaigning is finally over!!!

Now the candidate embarrassment is behind them and we only need a
magnifying glass on each of the newly elected officials.

What a relief!!!

I voted Yes for early voting for Maryland in the future. Hopefully that

Oh, and sqwertz, your candidate embarrassment ISN'T behind you! Your
adoring fag fans will need electron microscopes, not magnifying glasses to
see what you're made of!

Not insensitive, or even cynical. Strictly an objective view. You can't
tell me that he didn't get quite a lot of 'sympathy votes' out of it.

Sure, he didn't pick the time, but by the same token, it couldn't have
happened at a better time for him.

McCain was ahead in the polls up until the banking
crisis hit full-force in mid-September. As I see it, the
Masters of the Universe couldn't keep a handle on things
and so the sucker went to the opposition.

I voted for Obama, I'm very relieved he won, but I do worry
about Obama democrats who, while they did admirably hard work,
will assume too much that they did things right, as opposed to
were saved by a chance timing of events.

You could always send a sympathy card to Obama's Senate office. You can
look up the address at http://www.senate.gov

I doubt it. Obama was way a head in the polls before news of his
grandmother's illness was made public. Further, a lot of voters,
something like 30% voted early. Some even voted up to three weeks before
the death of Obama's grandmother.

That's ludicrous. This election was McCain's to lose. McCain lost the
eleection for a variety of reasons, none of which had to do with the
timing of Obama's grandmother's death.

If Obama really wants to demonstrate his desire to work across party
lines, he will appoint McCain to a cabinet position, such as Secretary
of the Department of Energy.

That's a fair question. Certainly, George "The Great Uniter" Bush didn't
reach out to house Democrats. Still, I expect better of Democrats.

Yep.

His father died in '82. His mother left him with the grandmother while
she did her own thing. She died in '94.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barack_Obama

Barack Obama was born at the Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women &
Children in Honolulu, Hawaii,[10] to Barack Hussein Obama, Sr., a Luo
from Nyang’oma Kogelo, Nyanza Province, Kenya, and Ann Dunham, a white
American from Wichita, Kansas[11] of mainly English, Scottish and Irish
descent.[12][13][14] His parents met in 1960 while attending the
University of Hawaii at Manoa, where his father was a foreign student.
[15][16] The couple married February 2, 1961;[17] they separated when
Obama was two years old and subsequently divorced in 1964.[16] Obama's
father returned to Kenya and saw his son only once more before dying in
an automobile accident in 1982.[18]

After her divorce, Dunham married Lolo Soetoro, and the family moved to
Soetoro's home country of Indonesia in 1967, where Obama attended local
schools, such as Asisi, in Jakarta until he was ten years old. He then
returned to Honolulu to live with his maternal grandparents while
attending Punahou School from the fifth grade in 1971 until his
graduation from high school in 1979.[19] Obama's mother returned to
Hawaii in 1972 for several years, and then in 1977 went back to
Indonesia, where she worked as an anthropological field worker. She
stayed there most of the rest of her life, returning to Hawaii in 1994.
She died of ovarian cancer in 1995.[20]

As an adult Obama admitted that during high school he used marijuana,
cocaine, and alcohol, which he described at the 2008 Civil Forum on the
Presidency as his greatest moral failure.

(So now you have a neglected Coke sniffer for President.)

(Seems he also has blood relatives in Kenya and Indonesia. I wonder if
they get a Secret Service detail?)

Obama has seven half-siblings from his Kenyan father's family, six of
them living, and a half-sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, the daughter of his
mother and her Indonesian second husband.

Didn't we just have this discussion here? A Canadian team won twice in

Canada/US...... same same.
Where's the Japs? Or the Aussies? Or the Chinese?

The "world" is not just Canada and the US..... sorry to burst a lot of
peoples bubbles there!!

If it's just between those two, then it should be renamed the Northern
Americas Championships..... or something similar.

That could leave him open to threat/blackmail etc, if some nutter decides
to go after his relatives...... especially in Indonesia, and Kenya.

He'll appoint a competent Republican who's on good terms with other
Republicans he's worked with.

I don't think McCain fits that description.

They were all white. Any attempt at violence against the Obamas "could" be
racially motivated. There are a lot of crazy folks out there.
