Default Safeway tigtens the screws

I've been going to Safeway to buy their great turkey bargains for over 30
yrs. Never have I encountered a problem. Go in, buy turkey, go out. Today,
we went to our local Safeway to buy the advertised turkey sale of $5/$7
turkeys, as we/I have done some many times before. Low and behold. once in
the store, we were confronted with a disclaimer sign above each frozen
turkey bin informing us that we must buy $25 worth of groceries to get said
discount! This was not in the flyer. Upon questioning Safeway storedroid,
I was informed this was policy for whole Denver district stores.

Have any other of you rfc regulars... about the country.... encountered this
extortion sales gambit?

The two large chains here in the Upstate NY area are both offering frozen
turkeys at 49 cents/lb. Can't find one that's under 15 lbs or so, tho.

No other purchase requirements.

Just for comparison. . .

I guess they find people are just buying the loss leader turkey
and none of the trimmings at their store. And they don't like it.
Their choice, of course.

There's a store near me that has that minimum purchase
with things like that. However, you know before you go, it's
in the circular.

As long as they have signs posted and/or print a retraction in the papers
they are covered.
IIRC the minimum purchase has always been a requirement.

Maybe for U

I've been taking advantage of this sale for 30+ yrs. Never seen it. I'd
go into Safeway, get sale turkey only, walk out. EOS (end of story).

The price of gas is 1/2 what it was 2 months ago. About what it was
before all that BS started. It's down to $1.91 here locally.

That was the *old* Safeway.

We live in Northern California. They had a 3-day sale last week.
My wife was aware of the $25 in groceries before she went.
When she asked about it, they didn't insist on it.

> Have any other of you rfc regulars... about the country.... encountered this

Whenever I read all the fine print in one of those flyers, they always
say they aren't responsible for errors. I'm guessing they wanted that
$25 all along, but it didn't make it into the flyer.

Makes sense, though. With the old Safeway, you could afford to buy
stuff that wasn't on sale. Now you can't. Since the turkey is a loss
leader, they've got to get their money somewhere else. If people come
in and just get the turkey, Safeway loses.

Why buy one of those horribly raised, hormone laden, tasteless turkeys
anyway? Safeway did you a favor. Contact your local farmer.

Yeah, but here we're used to getting way discounted prices (or free
merchandise) on all kinds of stuff when we make a $25 (sometimes less)
purchase. CashWise ( a division of Coburn's) does it all the time.
Hornbacher's (a division of SuperValu) has something new this year.
For every $25 purchase you make you get $1 in "Holiday Bucks" Last
week I got $4, today I got another $1. ("Food stamp" purchases count.
Holiday Bucks can be used to purchase almost anything except tobacco,
and they're good thru at least the end of January. Hornbacher's (5 BIG
stores, 1 medium) also has the most wonderful service and all their
stores are sparkling clean.

Disclaimer: I have done voice overs for Coburn's radio ads but I
don't shop at CashWise very often (except for bulk and organic spices
- faster turnover = fresher spices)

I've just returned from Safeway. My sole intent was to get a couple of
the smaller $5.99 turkeys. We aren't haven't turkey for Thanksgiving,
but cheap meat is cheap meat. All they had were the HUGE turkeys at
$7.99 left. There were no purchase restrictions other than a limit of
two per person. I skipped on the bigger birds because that would take up
too much room in our freezers, and also because when I read all the
stuff they'd been injected with (which of course inflates the weight) I
decided to pass. When the all natural, fresh birds go on sale right
after Thanksgiving, that's when I will snag one.

Talking to my butcher about the smaller turkeys being sold out, she said
her store got over 2,000 of those and they were gone in less than two
days -- and they couldn't get anymore.

UPDATE:

Ahhhh ... just now looking at this next week's sale circular (which
starts tomorrow) they show the same birds on sale again. This time it
says "with $25 purchase." I wonder if they will even get them in after
what I saw and heard today.

The Grade A Honeysuckles are $7.99 and $9.99 with $25 purchase as well.

Our chain of HEB's here in TX usually offer $.19/lb turkeys with
additional purchase of $25, or $.09/lb for additional $50 purchase.
Every year it's different, but it's always a deal. I usually end of
up with 2 or 3 depending on how much room is in the fridge/freezer.

You should have just demanded the advertised price. Are you sure
there wasn't any fine print?

$.59/lb for generic turkey isn't that great of a deal this time of
year anyway. That's regular, non-sale price around here.

It's always nice to hear from somebody who has all their facts
straight. Unfortunately, you're not one of them.

Hormone use in poultry production has been illegal for over 40
years.

I think they use those for parts.
Typical to find 13-15#, or 18-20#.

Ask for a rain check on the advertised $6 birds today (which are out
of stock) and get the birds next week without any additional
purchase requirement.

It is here in ABQ, NM.

However, the store circulars for this coming week haven't come out
yet... I will see if there are any special deals coming up, when I
check them out later tonight. The only store so far to have such an
ad, is the Albertsons here. There, the ad was for turkeys at
$0.34/pound with $20 purchase. Albertsons here, removed themselves
from the national chain, and don't require cards anymore.

I did when I had the butcher's ear. She said they weren't offering rain
checks on this.

No Safeways around me that I'm aware of. Regular grocery stores in a
couple states I'm familiar with typically have that "Free with $20
purchase" type of special for a mid sized turkey. I haven't paid much
attention this season, as I think I'm going to do something different,
perhaps a rack of lamb.

And besides, if you want a real turkey, you get a shotgun and a hunting
license and go shoot a real wild one yourself for a vastly superior
product.

It certainly is around here, buy something and get a second one "free"
with a ten dollar purchase. Buy x dollars of food excluding tobacco and
alcohol and get x cents off on a ham, turkey, roast. Etc, etc.

That being said, I got a coupon from Kroger for a free Private Selection
turkey weighing from 10 to 16 lbs. Didn't have to buy anything else as I
shop there all the time anyway.

Note: Best time to buy hams around here is right after Christmas. It's a
few months until Easter and the stores need to get rid of the hams on
hand. Same with frozen turkeys. I usually buy as many as I have room in
the big freezer for and then cook, smoke, make soup stock out of stuff
until the next big sale. Getting a Cooks Smoked ham for 39 cents a lb is
a deal around here plus they're a top rated ham.

That's how it works around here, seems as if all the
stores do this ... spend $XXX within a certain time frame and
get either a free turkey or 79 cents/pound off a better
turkey.

Just 'won' my free turkey a couple of days ago. That's
how the clerks put it, you won your free turkey, here's
your coupon. Makes me laugh.

Er... Yeah. For as far back as I can remember buying Thanksgiving
turkeys you always had to also purchase a relatively minor amount of
grocieries. Certainly less than I'd spend on the other items for a
Thanksgiving dinner, and less than half of what I'd spend on a normal
week's groceries. Sometimes I make an extra trip and stock up on canned
goods, frozen foods, etc. to take advantage of the ridiculously low
turkey prices.

Not quite the same -- he's talking about not being informed of this

From http://www.insidesocal.com/bargain/2...-prices-1.html

<q>

Prices are out for Thanksgiving turkeys! Every Tuesday the newspaper
publishes grocery ads, and this week all reveal their prices for big
birds. Here's a recap:

....

Vons - A Safeway brand or Manor House Turkey up to 16 lbs is $4.88 (making
a bird that is exactly 16lbs $.30/lb) with a $25 minimum purchase and a
Vons free frequent shopper card.

So much for hormone-free turkey.

We've always had to buy a certain amount of groceries to qualify for the
turkey special. $25 sounds right. Our turkey specials are priced at a
bargain cents per pound, not a dollar amount per turkey.

Sorry nb, you're rosy glasses are a little cracked; it's been
that way here in the SFBA for decades. I can't believe $afeway
$uit$ would allow Liverspot or Pville escape from Policy
Decisions.

It's one of the [many] reasons I reduced my shopping load at
that borg. I know your feelings on Gene's and Cosentino's but
most of the prices on basics are way better than $afeway (even
when I use the card) and Costco, Smart and Final trump $afeway
regularly.

My little stupidmarket in town gave half off with an additional $50
purchase. Instead of 59cts/lb I paid 29cts/lb. With prices what they
are today it's very easy to make the additional $50 purchase. I
didn't even know they had this deal, so when I got to the check out
with the turkey and rest of my purchase that's when I was informed (I
didn't read the circular), my total was like $2 and change short of
the $50... the checker waited while I grabbed three bottles of 7Up
from the end of the closest aisle (those were on sale at 99cts). In
fact I wouldn't have driven to the store for only a turkey, with
today's gas prices then I'd be the turkey. I would normally do my
holiday shopping at the big chain store (Price Chopper) some 20 miles
away but I happened to be in town, to the PO, bank, and liqour store,
and decided I needed a few groceries, and happened to see the frozen
turkey display and said why not. I got a 14.5 pounder store brand
(Best Yet brand). Did I get a bargain, don't really know. I remember
on Lung Guyland every store had a different turkey gimmick to lure you
in, typically if you spent $250 during the 30 days prior you got a
store brand turkey for free, any weight... they kept track of
purchases with the number on that little plastic tag. The store in
town hasn't any such thing, the deal was very straight forward...
they've generally higher prices than the big chain but if I buy only
their sale items I do very well... they also give a 5pct senior
discount on Wednesdays... gotta be 55... new checkers ask me for
proof, makes me feel good. I remember when the minimum drinking age
in NY was 18... when I was 30 they still would ID me, used to
embarrass me then in front of my friends, not anymore, and I'm as far
past 55 now as I was past 18 then... good jeans, gals still wanna get
into them.

The smaller boids are the hens, some stores don't carry many of the
below 14 pounders because they make more money selling the heavier
toms, because given a choice most would choose a hen, the swtore would
be stuck with lots of toms. Even if feeding a crowd it makes much
more sense to roast two hens than one giant tom... hens defrost
quicker, cook quicker, and are easier to judge proper degree of
doneness without overcooking, are easier to handle, are far easier to
carve, contain more meat to bone, and are more tender, juicier, and
taste better. I would always choose two hens over one humongous
tom... and a two turkey presentation is more dramatic. It takes no
more time to roast two hens as one, and most any 30" stove oven will
hold two hens.

A fresh ham costs a heck of a lot less than baaaaaad (lamb).

Or go out on your mountain bike, minding your own business, and have one
of those horrible, flappy, dinosaur-looking things kill itelf by
crashing into YOUR HEAD.

Although the free price tag hardly makes up for the co-pay on the ER
visit for stitches.

And no, it wasn't me, it was a friend, although I've had numerous close
encounters with the damned things. I know exactly why "bird brain" came
into common use as an insult. And squirrels. Don't even get me started
on squirrels.

Oh puhlezzzze! You think the local farmer does different that's
better, NOT! You watch too much sci fi. I've plenty local farmers
nearby, I won't buy even their eggs, nothing is inspected at the
farm. They ship most to a large processing plant, there the USDA
inspects, many times a small farmer's entire batch is rejected and
destroyed due to disease. You take a big chance buying especially
poultry from the locals, they may have good intentins and the
storybook free range but they follow few if any health guidelines.
Where I live anyone can raise poultry and sell from home and they
do. Right arond the corner from me less than a two minute walk a new
family moved in and is raising chickens, they have a big sign in front
"Eggs For Sale". I met them, they're very nice people, even though
their chickes are out all over the road, but I know better than to buy
uninspected eggs, that's riskier than buying a Rollex from a guy in
trench coat on a NYC street corner. I get my eggs from the Stewarts
in town.
