Default Disgusting dinners at someone else's house

What's the worst thing you've ever been served at a friend's house?
Like when you're a kid and you "eat over" somewhere and they serve
something you wouldn't eat on a bet but they're nice people and it's
your friend and you gotta eat it to be polite.

I remember being in the seventh grade and eating dinner at a friends
house a during Lent and the mom served creamed hard-boiled eggs on
toast. I still shudder remembering it.

mushy, over cooked spaghetti that had been first rinsed in water
(gadzooks, it was both wet *and* cold) then served on one of those nasty
foam disposable plates, with overly sweetened tomato sauce on top.

Not too long ago I had dinner at a friend's home. She made lasagna and
it had cumin in it. Yuck. Cumin does not belong in lasagna. This friend
is quite a good cook, usually. In this case, the food was edible, but it
just tasted "wrong".

The absolute worst was my sister's eggplant parm/lasagna. She layered
raw slices of eggplant with cheese and sauce. She might have put raisins
in it too. She puts raisins in everything. This was my first time eating
eggplant and it was a long time before I would ever try it again.
It was squeaky and bitter.

Turkey stuffing that was so watery it poured off a serving spoon.

Watery lasagna made with cottage cheese.

Hashbrown casserole with corn flake topping.

Spare ribs cooked on a grill over high heat for 30 minutes, served
with dry boneless chicken breast from market day with canned green
beans on the side.

BLT's with miracle whip.

Salmon patties with peas in them.

The list could go on and on.

Three things come to mind, all from when I was a kid.

1. Beets. I actually don't dislike them, but for some reason
they immediately made me sick. This was at a friend's house--very
classy family. I spewed at the table.

2. Oatmeal (normal US style).

3. Puree mongole consisting of a can of tomato soup and a can of
green pea soup.

They were both first encountered at my paternal grandparents'
house. I later encountered the oatmeal at private school. I
lived in dread oatmeal days.

Gamey, tough venison steak, served up with canned aspargus alongside.

My grilled half chicken ... well, of the four of us, mine came
out half-grilled chicken. Raw. I guess it wound up on the
cold side of the Weber. Rather than interrupt what was a fun
dinner, I cut it up so it wasn't obvious I didn't eat the whole thing,
and filled up on the sides.

Eggplant can be really bad in the wrong hands. My mother thought she
hated eggplant until she tried it at an Afghan restaurant and found that
it was indeed really good when cooked properly.

I'm not familiar with this, how does it compare to egg salad? Same thing
under a different name, or a completely different preparation.

You can't get much worse than canned asparagus. I'll eat it only out of
pity for the poor asparagus.

Venison is normally very good, but it sounds like someone didn't have a
handle on how to cook that one.

I have only recently discovered that I actually like eggplant. A
coworker brought eggplant meatballs to work for a potluck and I bravely
tried one. Amazingly good. Since then, I am all about the eggplant.

That recipe needs a splash of worcestershire sauce and/or hot sauce.
I agree it is pretty good.

Not enough.

I'm not all that fussy but at least make enough that the peas don't
need to be counted. I'll never forget being asked to a meat ball and
pasta dinner at a neighbor's house and everyone was served a salad
dish with a bit of ziti, very little sauce, and one small meat ball...
this was the main course. Eventually everyone was asked if they'd
like seconds, the host walked around the table placing a half meat
ball into the plates, I refused. Needless to say I never returned.

I loved creamed eggs on toast. Add a little dried beef and it's
heavenly.

don't like stuff other people like.

I don't much like peas, so don't put them in anything, but as I
recall, salmon patties are sometime served with a cream sauce
containing peas. You don't put peas in the salmon patties,
fergoshsakes!

I was asked to a BLT dinner and there was one pound of bacon for 5
people. Cheap ass creep. I hd said I'd bring beer so they drank the
beer I brought and I got a sandwich with one little piece of bacon on
it.

This is completely different.

You hard-boil some eggs; while hot, slice them into a basic "white
sauce" that you have prepared. Spoon over toast. Served hot. Yum.

Egg salad is chopped up hard-boiled egg plus mayo plus salt, pepper
and whatever else you want. It's served cold.

That's funny.

We had a neighbor family of very odd folk - mom, dad, one son, grade-
school-age.

They invited us (me and my two sons) over for "coffee and
conversation" during the Christmas holidays one year, and that's what
we got. Coffee and conversation. It was very strange. No drink for
the boys; no cookies or anything else. It turned out there was very
little conversation.

Not learning from that, the following summer, I accepted an offer for
some fresh peas from their garden "for [our] dinner." It was - I kid
you not - 1/2 of a teacup full (for 3 people). Teacup, not coffee
mug. That pretty much was the end of any socializing. But I remember
them every year when the wild raspberries they cultivated along the
fence creeps underneath into my yard, and I have to kill them off.

I remember my girlfriend's mother made turtle soup. I shudder to
think of it even today. I eventually married the girl, but her
mother's cooking was never all that good. She was a nice lady,
just not much of a cook.

Ah, so pretty close to egg salad, just hot and with béchamel instead of
mayonnaise.

You must have eated at my former MIL's house LOL I've never before (or
since) seen dressing so runny if you ran a spoon through it it "parted" like
the Red Sea and then went right back again. It was gawd awful stuff!

I would say it could be any of a number of meals prepared by my sort of
sister in law while visiting at their chalet. Sort of SiL because she is
the ex-wife of my wife's late brother. She was an absolute health food
fanatic who stuffed her kids with vitamin and mineral supplements,
probably a good idea because she cooked the daylights out of all
vegetables. She served nothing unless it had special nutritional value
(which she usually cooked out of it)

One time we went up to help with a construction project at the chalet.
After a morning of hard work we were called in for lunch..... boiled
eggs, plain yogurt and sunflower seeds. ... that was lunch.

I wouldn't say disgusting. Just not what I expected. We were invited to a
couples house for "goulash". Turned out it was home-made Beefaroni! It
wasn't bad but it wasn't Hungarian Goulash by any means

That is nauseating. I saw that on some cooking show last
year. It looked like a barf casserole.

I once spent the night with a sort of backwoods friend in junior high school
and their entire extended family came to the house for raccoon. I felt
horrible but I couldn't make myself try it. The family were all gulping it
down, and I still feel bad to this day for not even tasting it, when it was
clear that this was "gourmet food" to them and I was a guest in their home.
I just knew there was no way that animal was going in my mouth. Hell, it
probably tasted pretty good.

Creamed eggs on toast sounds pretty good!

I discovered in recent years that "goulash" to some folks means a made-up
dish of some sort of cooked pasta, tomato sauce and whatever, that is then
covered with cheese and baked for a while.

I guess you could say that. I think you could add whatever you want.
Unlike egg salad it's not going to hold well I don't think.

Kinda like veggies in jello. It just seems wrong.

Sounds about right. Everyone else raved about how good it was.
Stovetop stuffing would have been a vast improvement.
