What's the worst thing you've ever been served at a friend's house?
Like when you're a kid and you "eat over" somewhere and they serve something you wouldn't eat on a bet but they're nice people and it's your friend and you gotta eat it to be polite. I remember being in the seventh grade and eating dinner at a friends house a during Lent and the mom served creamed hard-boiled eggs on toast. I still shudder remembering it. Lynn in Fargo Probably why I converted to Judaism ;-) |

Cumin does not belong in lasagna. This friend is quite a good cook, usually. In this case, the food was edible, but it just tasted "wrong". The absolute worst was my sister's eggplant parm/lasagna. She layered raw slices of eggplant with cheese and sauce. She might have put raisins in it too. She puts raisins in everything. This was my first time eating eggplant and it was a long time before I would ever try it again. It was squeaky and bitter. Tracy |

I actually don't dislike them, but for some reason they immediately made me sick. This was at a friend's house--very classy family. I spewed at the table. 2. Oatmeal (normal US style). 3. Puree mongole consisting of a can of tomato soup and a can of green pea soup. They were both first encountered at my paternal grandparents' house. I later encountered the oatmeal at private school. I lived in dread oatmeal days. -- Jean B. |

My grilled half chicken ... well, of the four of us, mine came out half-grilled chicken. Raw. I guess it wound up on the cold side of the Weber. Rather than interrupt what was a fun dinner, I cut it up so it wasn't obvious I didn't eat the whole thing, and filled up on the sides. nancy |

You can't get much worse than canned asparagus. I'll eat it only out of pity for the poor asparagus. Venison is normally very good, but it sounds like someone didn't have a handle on how to cook that one. |

I have only recently discovered that I actually like eggplant. A coworker brought eggplant meatballs to work for a potluck and I bravely tried one. Amazingly good. Since then, I am all about the eggplant. -Tracy |

I'll never forget being asked to a meat ball and pasta dinner at a neighbor's house and everyone was served a salad dish with a bit of ziti, very little sauce, and one small meat ball... this was the main course. Eventually everyone was asked if they'd like seconds, the host walked around the table placing a half meat ball into the plates, I refused. Needless to say I never returned. |

You hard-boil some eggs; while hot, slice them into a basic "white sauce" that you have prepared. Spoon over toast. Served hot. Yum. Egg salad is chopped up hard-boiled egg plus mayo plus salt, pepper and whatever else you want. It's served cold. N. |

That's funny. We had a neighbor family of very odd folk - mom, dad, one son, grade- school-age. They invited us (me and my two sons) over for "coffee and conversation" during the Christmas holidays one year, and that's what we got. Coffee and conversation. It was very strange. No drink for the boys; no cookies or anything else. It turned out there was very little conversation. Not learning from that, the following summer, I accepted an offer for some fresh peas from their garden "for [our] dinner." It was - I kid you not - 1/2 of a teacup full (for 3 people). Teacup, not coffee mug. That pretty much was the end of any socializing. But I remember them every year when the wild raspberries they cultivated along the fence creeps underneath into my yard, and I have to kill them off. N. |

I remember my girlfriend's mother made turtle soup. I shudder to think of it even today. I eventually married the girl, but her mother's cooking was never all that good. I still shudder remembering it. I would say it could be any of a number of meals prepared by my sort of sister in law while visiting at their chalet. Sort of SiL because she is the ex-wife of my wife's late brother. She was an absolute health food fanatic who stuffed her kids with vitamin and mineral supplements, probably a good idea because she cooked the daylights out of all vegetables. She served nothing unless it had special nutritional value (which she usually cooked out of it) One time we went up to help with a construction project at the chalet. After a morning of hard work we were called in for lunch..... boiled eggs, plain yogurt and sunflower seeds. ... that was lunch. |
