Default Good site for Czech Christmas cookies?

Generally, Czech cuisine, unfortunately, is NOT the best, from most
accounts - aside from the beer, of course.

However, my father lived there for a few years and speaks fondly of
the cookies, even though he doesn't eat sweet things any more, mainly
for health reasons.

Does anyone know of a good recipe collection, online or off, for the
cookies? Thank you.

Lenona.

Are you looking for a particular type of Czech Christmas cookies
(vánocní cukroví)? There is more than one type and they all can be
called "Christmas cookies". There are linecké cukroví, which are of
Austrian origin, from the town of Linz. There are "vosí hnízda", "wasp
nests", cookies made with nuts and rum. There are vanilkové rolickí,
cookies covered in vanilla sugar. These are just some examples.

I do not know an English-language Web site that covers this matter.
However, there is a Czech one, at <http://www.vanocnicukrovi.com>, with
what appears to be a nice collection of such recipes. There are more to
be found if you explore the "Kategorie" link on the site. Perhaps your
father can translate the recipes for you.

Thank you!

In the meantime, does anyone know of any cookbooks for these?

Only have one Czech cookbook and there aren't very many biscuits/cookies
in it. It's 'Czech Cuisine' by Brizova and Klimentova. A Czech cookbook
translated into English.

Try these:

Almond stars (mandlove hvezdicky...minus the diacriticals)

250 g flour
100 g grated cheese
70 g almonds (ground)
pinch of salt
160 g butter or margarine
2 egg yolks
1 egg for brushing
fat for greasing the baking sheet

Filling:

70 g butter
50 g cream cheese
salt
paprika
1 tsp tomato puree
1 tsp white wine

Sift the flour, grated cheese, ground almonds and salt. Rub fat into the
flour and add the egg yolks. Knead to a smooth pastry, then roll it into
a thin sheet. Cut out stars with a cutter and brush them with the beaten
egg. Place on a greased baking sheet and bake in a moderate (350 F)
pre-heated oven. Filling: cream the butter, cream cheese, salt, paprika,
tomato puree and wine. Stick two stars together with the filling.
