Default A Thanksgiving Comedy of Errors

Before I start my bitch/rant, I want to say that I am so grateful that my
family will be together in my house with me doing the cooking. We will put
the extra leaf in the table, haul out mom and dad's wedding day china and
have a great time because we are together. My grandmother passed away
earlier this year and I am deeply sad that she is no longer with us, but
immensely grateful for the many long years we had with the old girl. She
was a pip.

Now.

The first sign that things are going to be rocky today was when I realized
that I had no eggs for the pies. Mom to the rescue at 5am. Oh by the way,
Mom, I'll also need for you to return my pie plates if we're gonna have
pie! I then went to make the pastry for the pies. The little plastic
locking thingie on the Cuisinart broke off and the !(#$*(!)*$#!$# thing
won't work without it. <sigh> OK, get out the pastry blender and do it by
hand. I haven't made pie pastry in DECADES without a food processor and I'd
forgotten what a comparative PITA it is to do it by hand! I barely had
enough flour but squeaked by.

OK, pastry made, wrapped in plastic and placed in the fridge. Awhile later,
I roll it out. DAMN. It's way too tender and crumbly. There was a time
when I would have pitched the lot in the bin and gone out and bought a pie,
but I've matured some since then <VBG> I managed to get both pie pastries
rolled out and fluted. Not up to my usual standard, but hey, it should
taste good. I go to make the filling. I had 2 of the small cans of
pumpkin. I remind myself as I read the recipe to double all the
ingredients. Filling made and placed in pastry, then into oven. OH BLOODY
HELL, I only put 2 eggs in. SH*T! I haul the pies out of the oven **and
pour the filling back into the mixing bowl**. Quite a mess. Added the
eggs, poured the filling back into the shells and in the oven they go. Now
they DEFINITELY don't have the beautiful appearance of my usual pies but
what the hell. I am not going to say "what else can go wrong" because
that's just begging for more trouble!

The bird is sitting on the counter and will go into the oven shortly. It's
a mighty big bird. I hope the fam are hungry!

We could call today “TF” (Tammy’s Folly) )

The absolutely worst thing I ever had happen was the year I totally forgot
to turn on the oven with the turkey inside. We ate 5 hours late, in fact,
late into the night.

At least you didn't spill some of the pie filling down the front of
you and a bank of 4 drawers like I did Mon. night.
Pumpkin pie filling and fluffy slippers = trash bin.

Absolute horror raced through my mind when I discovered it, but luckily, no
one present had to work on Friday and we all just continued to graze on
appetizers and have a bit more wine while we waited it out. The one
*really* good thing was that all the games on TV were over by the time we
sat down to dinner, so no competition for watching and eating. I’ve always
hated that. We do laugh about it now, and if there are guests who were
present on that occasion, they never fail to ask if the oven is on. ))

It doesn't matter how it looks on the table, it's how it goes down.

(Besides, it all comes out looking the same!!)

They're lucky to have you doing the cooking for them. I maintain that
the best tasting meals are the ones you don't have to cook yourself :-)

If anyone complains, or makes comments on looks, tell them to **** off
and go to Burger King ;-)

No, how about Thanksgiving With Tammy, or TWT. We'll have a contest to
decide how to pronounce it!

Whatever you do, don't bypass that important safety feature by using a
wooden match, blunt end of a bamboo skewer, nail, skinny screwdriver or
anything similar.

And be sure not to tell anybody that we did it for a few years.

LOL! You're a bad man, Dan Abel!

Everything turned out wonderfully. It was a lovely day with my fam. The
pies were PDG even if they looked pretty sad. Best of all is all the
leftover turkey that I will utilize in a number of ways: turkey rice/veg
soup, turkey chilaquiles, and so on!!!

O LORD! YOu poor thing!

LOL! Im sorry to laugh...it's just that I Can SEE the SAME thing
happening to me...and me dealing with it the same way. OUT of the oven,
mix in the eggs...BACK into the oven and PRAY for the best!

Bless your heart and GOOD ON YA!

The mark of the great cook is NOT when everything gors right...but when
everything goes WRONG and you STILL produce a fine meal!

I used a frozen Mrs. Smith's pie this year and we followed the
directions---bake FROZEN at 375 for 90 minutes....and the damn thing
NEVER got firm in the center...we put it BACK in the oven for an extra
fifteen minutes...and it still never got firm.

Fortunately, by then I was OVER it and didnt really care! Somebody in
the kitchen called out, "hey this thing still isnt completely firm..."
and I hollered back, "Think of it as Pumpkin PUDDING!"

Screw it---from my POV, it was time for the after-dinner-couch-nap and I
didnt want to be bothered with the damn pie....

You're very kind. It did occur to me that another option was to dump the
filling into a bowl, take some bread, some dried cranberries, some hootch
and make pumpkin bread pudding. I just mentioned this to my mother who said
"bleccchhhhh" but I think it sounds like a jolly good idea. I think I'm
going to try that as one of my offerings at Christmas. I'll make something
else to please the traditionalists. Sometimes a (silly) girl's just gotta
be free :-)

Among the lovely things about growing older are a) developing a sense of
humor b) achieving an ability to NOT take oneself so Alex-damned seriously
and c) gaining an understanding that it's all a part of the journey. Enjoy
it all (or as much of it as possible), it doesn't last forever.

Um... you *do* know that after cooking you're supposed to let it sit
completely undisturbed for an hour or so, right?

Oh, how terrible. My day went fine, until I was making the stuffing and
I could not find the Poultry Seasoning. My husband, the new, improved
2.0 version, forgot to mention that he used the last of it and he forgot
to write it on the list. Since we both cook, this was bound to happen.
He is such a great cook, I did not complain (as if I ever would... well
I do, but only to myself lol). We survived, I used sage, thyme,
rosemary and marjoram, along with salt and pepper, and it tasted fine.

I made a fruit dip of cream cheese, marshmallow fluff and vanilla. It
tasted great while it was still warm, after it was room temperature, it
was too firm, you couldn't even dip an apple into it. :-(

My worst thing was this year. I prepared the turkey for the oven, put it in
the oven on 325 to cook and soon smelled something burning. The oven had ran
amok and got stuck on broil and wouldn't stop. We had to turn off the
circuit breaker. I still had side dishes to bake. We used our outdoor cooker
the rest of the day. I put the dressing in the crockpot. Everything was
adequate but not great.
