Just before reading this thread, I was thinking about that jar of Dijon mustard in my fridge. I didn't think it was too old, but now I recall it was bought for dipping strips of Australian ribeye steak, and Trader Joe's hasn't carried that for about a year or so. I'll move it to the staging area for garbage without opening it. |

It keeps forever. :-) Pftthhggbbtt! I started a major kitchen cleanup today and I figured that it was time to pull the fridge out of it's cozy little corner so that I could pull out all the drawers and shelves, purge it of all its little science projects. Then I was going to go through my pantry and discard old stuff like the 6 year old packages of rice noodles and cans with rusty tops. I was going to clean out the closets and wash the floor. I had a good start. I was home with the groceries by 1:30. I took the stuff out of the racks on the door, threw some things in the garbage, removed the shelves, washed them washed the doors. Then I got a telephone call from a friend who had just returned from her sister's funeral in North Dakota where she had spent the last week. That call lasted close to an hour. When I got off the phone I cleared the big shelves, pulled the shelves and drawers out and started scrubbing them, scrubbed the sides and bottom of the unit. I don't know where all that crap came from but it did not want to come off without a fight. Then my nephew came by, so I talked with him for about an hour. I was able to put some things back. Once he left I was able to put the fridge back into the corner, put everything back, bring int he groceries and put them away. I just got everything put away by the time my wife got home and saw the remnants of my white tornado.... a mess of the soon to be trashed science projects, empty containers, bags of crap lying around. Before she had a chance to say anything I said "Look what I did this afternoon" and opened up the fridge. She was quite impressed until she saw that I had not put things back in the order that she had them. :-) So tomorrow I tackle to cupboards and the floor. |

My refrigerator is easy to clean, even the door shelves just come out to be washed in the sink. Very handy and it's no big deal to clean every inch. But ... I have never cleaned out the freezer section. I am sure the bottom is not a pretty sight, so best not take out that lowest basket and know for sure. nancy |

Why don't people (my family) just leave the uneaten food? A leftover salad is no good to anyone unless you're going to eat the balance that day. Any time we are having a large gathering and I am going to need room in the fridge I take everything out and purge it of things that have been there too long or which don't really need to be in it. I also like to tackle it when it is as close to being empty as possible. That way there is less to clear out. Then there are the times that you notice that the shelves are getting grungy and disgusting. I can live with it but I don't like the idea of other people looking in my fridge and being disgusted. |

I just checked. The date is 3/20/09. But that would be if it were unopened. It's almost full, but it's old enough that I don't trust it. Goes out with the next garbage pickup. |
