When was the last time you did a front to back.....top to
bottom, remove all the shelves, throw unknown things away refrigerator
cleaning? That includes the door and tossing assorted
condiments, jars of mole, pickled watermelon, etc.

Actually, last Sunday, after all the Thanksgiving stuff was gone. This
weekend I'll restock.

Just before reading this thread, I was thinking about
that jar of Dijon mustard in my fridge. I didn't think
it was too old, but now I recall it was bought for dipping
strips of Australian ribeye steak, and Trader Joe's
hasn't carried that for about a year or so.

I'll move it to the staging area for garbage without
opening it.

i've taken to marking the date when i open it on the jar of mustard,
mayonnaise and the like, even though they may have a 'best by' date on
them.

I just checked. The date is 3/20/09. But that
would be if it were unopened.

It's almost full, but it's old enough that I don't
trust it. Goes out with the next garbage pickup.

that seems a little paranoid to me, especially for a jar of mustard.
water, vinegar, mustard seed, salt and white wine. what's there to spoil?

maybe the taste would suffer, but not by too much, i don't think.

I did that in my freezer section last week. And there's no need to toss
pickled watermelon, Sonny! It keeps forever. :-) Pftthhggbbtt!
I went through the refrigerator door within the last month.

I just cleaned the refrigerator a month or two ago. My
refrigerator is easy to clean, even the door shelves just
come out to be washed in the sink. Very handy and it's
no big deal to clean every inch.

But ... I have never cleaned out the freezer section. I am
sure the bottom is not a pretty sight, so best not take out
that lowest basket and know for sure.

I generally operate on a continuous audit, reviewing things every
Tuesday evening when I'm assembling the garbage to put out in the
morning.

Almost weekly when I have to throw away all the leftovers and take home
unfinished stuff from the restaurants.

Why don't people (my family) just leave the uneaten food?

A leftover salad is no good to anyone unless you're going to eat the balance
that day.

When I was young, my mother taught me to clean out the fridge before
Thanksgiving. This way, the fridge is cleaned out before cooking begins
and the guests arrive. This is also when she exterminated the house. I
ignore that, since we have not seen any bugs.

Thanks for including the original message. It looks like I miss a lot

That is a good way to do it. Any time we are having a large gathering
and I am going to need room in the fridge I take everything out and
purge it of things that have been there too long or which don't really
need to be in it. I also like to tackle it when it is as close to being
empty as possible. That way there is less to clear out.

Then there are the times that you notice that the shelves are getting
grungy and disgusting. I can live with it but I don't like the idea of
other people looking in my fridge and being disgusted.

Quite a while. The refrigerator stays clean... although I must admit
sometimes things get lost at the bottom of the vegetable bins.

Ha! Just TODAY!! And the cupboards too. Holy Aging Spices, Batman, I threw
out so much stuff. Embarrassing, really.

Discovered I have 2 bottles each of light and dark corn syrup. 2 bottles of
molasses. FOUR bottles of pomegranate molasses. Umpteen million jars of
jams and jellies

Note to self: stop buying $h*t!

You are a better man than I Michael. I started a major kitchen cleanup
today and I figured that it was time to pull the fridge out of it's cozy
little corner so that I could pull out all the drawers and shelves,
purge it of all its little science projects. Then I was going to go
through my pantry and discard old stuff like the 6 year old packages of
rice noodles and cans with rusty tops. I was going to clean out the
closets and wash the floor.

I had a good start. I was home with the groceries by 1:30. I took the
stuff out of the racks on the door, threw some things in the garbage,
removed the shelves, washed them washed the doors. Then I got a
telephone call from a friend who had just returned from her sister's
funeral in North Dakota where she had spent the last week. That call
lasted close to an hour.

When I got off the phone I cleared the big shelves, pulled the shelves
and drawers out and started scrubbing them, scrubbed the sides and
bottom of the unit. I don't know where all that crap came from but it
did not want to come off without a fight. Then my nephew came by, so I
talked with him for about an hour. I was able to put some things back.

Once he left I was able to put the fridge back into the corner, put
everything back, bring int he groceries and put them away. I just got
everything put away by the time my wife got home and saw the remnants of
my white tornado.... a mess of the soon to be trashed science projects,
empty containers, bags of crap lying around.

Before she had a chance to say anything I said "Look what I did this
afternoon" and opened up the fridge. She was quite impressed until she
saw that I had not put things back in the order that she had them. :-)

So tomorrow I tackle to cupboards and the floor.

Oh lordy, I feel you there! I try to do that at least every 3 or 4
years... Any food that's been frozen over that amount of time is not
recoverable for the most part.

I hate freezer burn.

Fortunately, I've gotten into the habit of writing dates on all frozen
food for the last 6 or 7 years so I KNOW how old it is.

If it had been my freezer, the FBI never would have
found the money.

They'd just take one look in there and figure
they've got much better things to do with their
