Default Trader Joe's Comes to Town

Trader Joe's is building a new store within about 10 mins. of my house
and directly en route from my drive to/from work. Yippee skippee!
They're not building fast enough to save me from having to make a
convoluted drive home on Tues. or Weds. to see if they're still
carrying boudoirs/savioridis/champagne biscuits/ladyfingers of some
sort for my trifle. They're usually the only place I can find them. I
may try that on Tues., b/c if they fail me, I'll make a convoluted
drive hom on Weds. to get by Whole Foods.

Terry "Squeaks" Pulliam Burd,

That's great!!!

What to buy??? It varies by region!

TJs sure changed the shopping patterns of my town!

Try the Hawaiian-style salted potato chips. Strong on crunch! Great for
dipping! Look for a 4-bottle pack of Reed's "Extra" Ginger Beer (STRONG
non-alcoholic ginger ale) for a tastebud quake,

Best,

Andy

They are building one in Vriginia Beach too (not on the web site for some
reason) and I'm hoping it's really nicely located for me. I have a feeling
it may be on Laskin RD which works well enough. Asked in a local forum and
waiting for the answer.

Next nearest is 50-60 miles one way North of me. Too far as I never have
any reason to drive up north that far.

Lucky you - the money you save on gas can now go toward grub. No TJ's
within hundreds of miles of me, but I hear wonderful tales.

Enjoy the time saved too.

I thought there was one in Newport News. Actually, I know it is
there. How far away from you is that one?

She is about right on the mileage and the traffic is horrendous,
especially before 10 am and after 2:30 pm. It seems that everyone who
works in Virginia Beach lives in Newport News and everyone who works
in NN lives in VB. It is also fairly drivable after 7 pm. Getting
from one area to the other involves bridges and tunnels unless you
want to go almost to the NC line. And forget it if you find out the
there is an accident along the way. You soon learn the last exits on
either side before you get stuck. I have held my breath a few times
going from Hampton to the Norfolk airport, even at 6 am.

I made my first trip to TJ's last Saturday. It was in downtown
Charlotte, NC. I had some of the Charles Shaw Shariz at a friends
house and liked it so I picked up some of it and a few of the others.
Their NY deli cheesecake is great. I will probably go to the one in
Chapel Hill in February. We have a luncheon in Burlington and a
concert in Raleigh the same day. We will take our time getting home
the next day. So a trip to TJ's and A Southern Season are on the
agenda.

50-60 miles one way. Definately not worth it in a big city like this one to
go that far for a mere grocery store, no matter how interesting. Too many
local options, several in walking distance of my house.

Lets see: BJ's 2 miles, Sams 1.5 miles, Harris Teeters 1.5 miles, Kroger,
1.6 (but cant walk that one, across the highway and no walk light), Asian
Grocery 4-5 miles (along the route back from Chiro), Japanese grocery, 1.8
miles, big mall 1.5 miles, Wallmart 1.4 miles, Kmart 2 miles, Farm Fresh 2.2
miles, Big Lots 2.2 miles, Food Lion 2.5 miles, Commisary 9 miles but across
from Chiro and another at 10 miles which is a 2 mile diversion from my
regular route home, main commisary 20 miles but on the route home, etc etc
etc.

Thats just the tip of the iceberg here. Ethnic groceries galore all
routable on the way home with little difference in distance.

I'm interested in TJ's as I've heard good things about them, but not about
to make a 100 mile round trip just to check them out.

Oh definately! My ship (Stennis) was in the yards up there and it was a
terrible trek up and back all that time (1995-1997 then moved to NOB).

Used to divert to the 664 up past Suffolk and then cross over. For the
others, there are 2 main bridges between 'southside' and 'northside'. Both
are 2 lanes with a tunnel at least in parts. The bridges are if memory
serves, 11 miles and 15 miles respectively? Just to get to the bridges
(nearest is busiest) is 30 miles roughly.

Used the Chesapeake Bay Bridge tunnel last time when treking up to NY state,
just to avoid the mess. 13$ fee but nice easy route. Does not however
connect back to the area where TJ's is best i know of.

Yup. Hampton is a nice place, but the congress between our areas is
difficult for others not here to understand. Snicker, I'm happy the airport
is on OUR side!

With gas back down in the $1.75 range, it might be. Not so much for most of
their food, but 2$CHK is still a steal. I hafta go 500 miles round trip.
That may not be worth it, but 200? No doubt about it. I'd buy at least 10
cases ($360) and be set with wine for some time. Wine around here is
expensive or lousy or both. Definitely worth a trip. I'd also pick up some
NM mesquite or oak. CO is sadly lacking in any form of hardwood.

Look for Bear's Lair (brand). I like it better than Chuck's.

YIPPIIEEE!!! Not bad at all for me! 6 miles if that. Just dive off on
Laskin and run right into it on the way to the Chiro, or the way back.

It is Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport and is actually
located in Newport News. Anything near I64 on the peninsula is
great.

Phhttbbbttt!!

Actually, there are several Trader Joe's sprinkled Orange County CA,
but most are awkward for me to get to *and* getting there is moribund
with traffic after work, so I was ever so pleased to find a TJ's going
up at Aliso Creek and the 73, which just happens to be my exit on the
ride to/from work.

You are lucky! I recently went a TJ near where I live here on Long
Island, NY. It is a terrific store, with lots of interesting items. I
bought some organic blackberry preserves, some frozen tamales, and
some organic mango lemonade. They were all TJ's own brand, but oddly,
none of the items had an expiration date or "use buy" date. Is this
typical of TJ items?

sf,

I just can't picture you pulling a little red wagon full of groceries up and
downhill home from Trader Joe's.

Take the Mercedes!?

Actually, I have a tricked out "little red wagon" (Radio Flyer) I
could use! Son attached a gear shift, muffler and license plate to it
when GS was little.

Great idea Andy! And to think I was considering investing in a Granny
cart.
