Default New Year's fare

For the Eve, we are having our usual little buffet with cold cuts,
devilled eggs, shrimp etc. Glass of wine (forgoing the sparkly this
year) to celebrate.

For New Year's Day, pork trotters/feet with sauerkraut and potatoes.
Supposed to bring good luck for the New Year. Obviously that didn't work
for the pigs... Sweets galore for afters.

And you?

Well, today I went to Central Market and bought a beautiful fresh ham,
10 pounds, I shall roast it till it has brown and crunchy skin and
make delicious gravy. Have not quite decided on the sides yet.

New Years Eve, I am going to a dinner party, and have no idea what
will be served.

If the google interface wasn't the way it is now, I'd search for that
blackeyed pea spread someone mentioned last week. I'd like to
make it because my Texan nephew-in-law is someone who will scoot to
the local 7-11 for a can of black eyed peas at 11:30 PM if he can't
find any in the house.

Neither of us has been feeling well, and I can't imagine doing any
actual cooking - possibly not eating, either. We're contemplating
ordering pizza for New Year's Eve. We might just break out some
frozen, pre-cooked shrimp and cocktail sauce. Crash wants to get a
couple bottles of pre-mixed Mudslides.

The Kalua Pig will have to wait, I'm afraid.

There is some nasty crud going around... Several nurses have been out
sick with it, and two had to go home yesterday in the middle of the
shift.

Take care. Order some chicken soup too!

David wants lasagne for both New Years Eve and New years Day. I don't.
I've nver been overwhelmed by lasagne, but I will eat it. We will make his
lasagne early tomorrow for reheating later.

I'm a nibbler on New Years Eve, and will have cold boiled shrimp with
either a stong cocktail sauce or a Louis sauce. I'll also have a variety
of cheeses, crackers, etc.

On New Years Day I will have country style pork ribs with sauerkraut and
mashed potatoes.

Sweets all around.

Drove into town today & picked up a dozen fresh oysters, a nice
Dungeness crab & some fresh asparagus. New Year's Eve we'll share the
oysters while we grill a couple of nice steaks on the BBQ - I've
promised to make Hollandaise. At midnight we'll pour a wee dram of
the good cognac, share a kiss and turn in at about 12:15 - some party
animals.

New Year's Day DH will enjoy the cracked crab while he goes into his
annual state of Bowl Game bliss. Me, I'm going to brew myself a nice
a pot of tea, curl up with a couple of cats & a good book, and spend
the afternoon grazing on leftover Christmas cheese & crackers. For
Dinner - pig - in the form of baby back ribs.

All leftover goodies out to be consumed hopefully before the house empties

For those who don't want to look at the tinypic, that's

Smoked Salmon & Cucumber Canapés

Braised Duck w/ "Red Cabbage Wild Rice"

Endive & Stilton Salad

Chocolate Profiteroles
Vanilla Ice Cream
Bittersweet Chocolate Sauce

Figuring the duck and the salad will both have extremely strong flavors, I'm
wondering whether cold duck or an Australian sparkling Shiraz will be served
to drink.

My blond, blue-eyed daughter thinks she is Asian, so we will be
having noodles. I am thinking of merging something like Peking
Noodles and a ma-po-type sauce... or something. Later, we will
have our traditional chocolate fondue, which I can only eat a very
few bites of....

I'm sorry you all are unwell, Carol, and hope whatever it is
passes quickly. I also hope the New Year is a great one for you,
and that includes you loving your new abode.

Former roomie and her husband are hosting an NY Day do, and are doing the
rib/sauerkraut thing. My tradition is black-eyed peas and greens, so I'm
going to make my black-eyed pea soup along with my favorite kale/escarole
dish.

TammyM, 2009 has just GOT to be better than 2008 (wouldn't take much....)

Let's hope 2009 is better than 2008 for everyone else as well!

Slight menu change: we are having red cabbage rather than sauerkraut and
did in fact buy a bottle of sparkly plonk (ie cheap).

We had pan seared sea scallops on a bed of greens and some nice big
tiger shrimp baked in garlic butter. Our neighbours came over with some
eggnog cheese cake for dessert.

Tonight we are having prime rib with Yorkshire pudding, roasted potatoes
and carrots and beans or Brussels sprouts. I had some leftover pastry
and made a pie shell and some butterscotch pudding filling.
