I'm not one to make resolutions. I'm just trying to maintain until
June.

I can only think of one that's both good for me, and that I can keep
for sure. No more "cheating" and drinking pop with sugar. Other
beverages are better, primarily water.

Eating some of mom's fudge, catching up on internet stuff, and listening to
_That's Entertainment_ on the teevee in the background. It's my b-day but I
don't like going out on NYE, too many drunks and loudmouths, it's strictly
"amateur night". We'll celebrate this weekend, some are still outta town
for the holidays. Interestingly, two other friends also share the same
b-day...

It seems kinda quiet out tonight, I think peeps are toning it down because
of the economy, many staying home to celebrate. Evanston to the north
cancelled it's "First Night" NYE events, a sign 'o the times. Even this
low - key event couldn't get funding:

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/l...0,500503.story

Evanston cancels First Night celebration for New Year's Eve

Economic downturn does in the event where businesses and churches opened
doors and entertainers performed
By Brian Cox

Special to the Tribune

December 31, 2008

"Faced with fundraising woes because of the sluggish economy and a shortage
of volunteers, Evanston's popular First Night New Year's Eve party is over
after a 15-year run.

"We're taking a hiatus this year," First Night board member Martha Rudy said
Tuesday. "I would be surprised if it comes back next year. I think were
looking at two years down the road."

First Night International lists more than 100 communities nationwide that
hold similar events. Evanston's First Night was launched as a
family-friendly and substance-free way to ring in the new year by
celebrating music and the arts, Rudy said. Dozens of churches, hotels, banks
and office buildings opened their doors, and performers provided live
entertainment.

"Having First Night taken away is a little sad for us because it was a great
opportunity for churches to open their doors to a group of people who
otherwise might not come in," said George Atkins with First Presbyterian
Church of Evanston.

Rudy said cuts in grant money for the arts and lack of corporate
sponsorships made it impossible to raise the $110,000 to hold the event.

Go to the kitchen store and get a couple of unique items, like an IFR
thermometer. And the 99 cent store for some new wooden utensils. Damn,
those things are handy.

Happy New Year to you too!

We went for mussels for appetizers followed by Red Roman fish (local
seafood) last night. Gonna have some pork tenderloin today - and I
still have 2kg of shrimp in the freezer. That's on the menu for
tomorrow.

I've been drinking a lot of hot tea lately, and to skip the highly
processed sugars, I use a little honey and lemon. When I have cold tea,
a wedge/slice of lemon is refreshing by itself.

To me, water get's boring, soda is too sweet, and juice without watering
it down 50/50 has too many calories.

Last night for appetizers we had spiced cold shrimp with either a cocktail
sauce or Louis sauce. Following we had lasagne bolognese. Today will be
pork and sauerkraut with mashed potatoes. I baked a pineapple upside-down
cake to be had for both days.

I must make a pineapple upside-down cake. All these
years and I never got around to it. Can't imagine why.

Last night we had swedish meatballs a la Alton Brown.
Very tasty. Today it's prime rib, can't wait.

Hmmm. Maybe I'll make those caramel pecan ginger
cakes from King Arthur Flour for dessert.

Yes, Nancy, you must make one. They're so good. There are many recipes
and all are simple to make.

I love swedish meatballs. I should try Alton's recipe. I haven't made
them in years. Did you serve them with noodles?

The last two prime rib roasts I cooked were disappointingly tough. Kinda
puts me off of making another, yet I really love them.

Is that a mix or recipe from King Arthur?

Sounds grand, Wayne.

I'll pass on the sauerkraut - it's cabbage, after all. Sorry. Cabbage,
to me, is like 'dirt chunks' to others <blech>...

I love pineapple upside down cake and make it about once a year. It is
pretty easy to make and sinfully tasty.

Had a taste of it last night. It was really very good. A nice old-

New Year's resolution, I will make one and soon. As a
