Default Vanilla bean sticker shock

For better or worse, I don't pay a whole lot of attention to food prices.
It's just me, for cryin' out loud, and if I want it I get it. But something
made me ask the price of the one li'l ole vanilla bean in a jar, which I
didn't really need NOW but I'd used the last of the Penzey's beans so ...

"Ten dollars and" was all I heard. I keeled over before she got to the
cents. So I checked my Penzey's catalog and they have three Madagascars for
$7.25.

Guess it's time to inventory the spice drawer and see what else I need.

Up yours, McCormack.

There are other websites selling vanilla beans at a far cheaper price
than Penzey's. I recently bought a quarter of a pound for about 10 bucks
not too long ago. I think it is something like 40-50 beans. I also got
some saffron -not the absolute best saffron - but not bad for the price.

I like Penzey's but I wouldn't pay that much for 3 beans.

Costco has a card of 2 stoppered glass tubes. Each tube has 5 - 7.5 inch
vanilla beans. They are Madagascar beans, very supple, fresh and aromatic.
Price is about $11.

For years now modern chemistry has made possible vanilla flavoring
that no human can distingush from real vanilla, bean or extract... and
if you are going to heat your beans or extract in teh course of use
then you are simply totally wasting your money. Only use real vanilla
for things you don't heat, and there aren't many, like whipped cream
and ice cream... and even then no human can tell... you'd need highly
trained scent dogs to pick real from modern artificial. If you heat a
vanilla bean to extract the flavor then you wasted your time and
money.

Holy cow! That's bad! Good thing we still have Penzeys. Crash was
asking me last night what I wanted for Valentine's Day. I told him a
Penzey's gift certificate. Let's see what Cupid brings ....

eBay. VB's are cheap as chips.

250g (about 70 beans) for AUD$30.

I mentioned in here a few weeks ago that the vanilla crop in Madagascar,
which provides most of the world's vanilla, has been hit hard by a virus.

That's what I did- got 25 beans for 16 bucks- that included the
shipping! Not the best I've ever seen, but still well worth the cost,
and they taste good...

And you can use them rather indiscreetly :-)

I got a 250g bag off eBay, and have ended up giving most away to friends,
as there was more than I'd *ever* use.

I still have a large fistful left.

You really need to stop assuming that other people have a sense of
taste as you have as poorly developed as your own. I freely admit to
have used artificial vanilla extract before I learned the difference. I
can tell the difference. I use real vanilla extract in my ice cream
base, which I taste. Sometimes I use vanilla beans as well. My wife has
no problem noticing the difference and usually comments after her first
taste of it that I have used beans.

They are terrific vanilla bean. I did not see any at my Costco this
morning. The place was stripped bare after the holiday, though.

I've seen the ad too - it's a soft serve making and dispensing machine,
though - not intended for making "normal" ice cream.

That's asking a lot, my memory isn't what it used to be :-) I've seen it
more than once - hang on, Peters of Kensington ad in the paper I think.
Somewhere else too. Ah, thought it was in the copy of the Christmas issue
of Super Food Ideas mag, which I borrowed from my sister. Just checked
though and what they have is a competition to win one = closes Jan 13 so if
you can find a copy you still have time to enter :-)

According to the blurb in SFI $199 is the recommended retail price, not a
special. Just tried to check Peters of Kensington website but it's not
working at the moment - just getting error messages.

I've got a couple hundred $$'s credit on my Optus (throwaway) mobile, so
I *might* just send in a couple (or 35) entries :-)

With that copy of SFI's , you should have got the Christmas mag from
Taste.com.au.

Have a look on the page with all the employees names.......

If I get one for free, that's even better :-)

I've already got several prizes from SFI's.

And have a personally signed 'specials' recipe book from Kimmy, with
whom I spent an altogether too brief 15mins with at the Brisbane Food
and Wine Show (2007).

She's an absolute gem, and a spunk to boot.

I used to be in the cake decorating baking business and my partner and
myself tried the artificial vanilla because it's clear in color. We tried
it because we wanted pure white icing especially on wedding cakes. Bottom
line was that we didn't use it. It bore absolutely no resemblance in flavor
compared to the real vanilla. Artificial vanilla = very unpleasant stuff.
