I always thought it was one of my grandmother's special recipes, but then I found that both it and "our" bread pudding recipe came from Fannie Farmer. Sterling Sauce 1/2 c butter 1 c brown sugar 1 tsp vanilla (FF said or 2 Tbsps wine; we always used vanilla) 4 Tbsps cream or milk Cream the butter [obviously at room temp], add sugar gradually, and milk and flavoring drop by drop to avoid separation. This was most yummy served atop a hot pudding.... -- Jean B. |
