AFAICR almonds are fine raw, roasted or dry fried. I believe that
apricot kernels, however, are somewhat toxic. I also seem to remember
that an altrnative treatment to cancer called laetrile (sp?) is made
from apricot kernels. The late Edgar Caycee (sp?) ate raw apricot
kernels daily. But then - he's dead, you know.

I don't think it was the apricot seeds that got him.

Amanda,

I had heard about this, but I don't know the current status:

California-grown raw almonds are no longer raw, following enactment of
a new federal rule. The USDA mandate requires raw almonds to be
sanitized using treatment processes that the industry generously
describes as “pasteurization.”

The rule requires sanitation of almonds with a toxic fumigant or
treatment with high-temperature heat. The scheme imposes significant
financial burdens on small-scale and organic growers, lacks scientific
justification, damages domestic almond markets, and does not address
the unsustainable methods used on the industrial-scale almond orchards
where the only two documented Salmonella outbreaks have occurred. And
the treated almonds can still be deceptively labeled as “raw!”

We are now coordinating a legal challenge to the raw almond treatment
mandate. A lawsuit seeking to overturn the almond pasteurization rule
was filed on Sept. 9, 2008 in the Washington, D.C. federal court.
Fifteen almond farmers and handlers are plaintiffs in the complaint
(click here to view the news release announcing the lawsuit).

So if I can't find something else about this on the net, it seems that
your commercially purchased raw almonds have been processed to get rid
of germs and bugs. This copy and paste came from the Cornucopia
Institute. I don't know how dependable they are, but there are many
similar citations on the web.

I hope this helps,

Ken

If the cleaning process bothers you, perhaps you can find some from a
health food store that

According to an article by Uncle Cecil (aka Cecil Adams) in The
Straight Dope some years ago - just don't overdo it. Raw almonds
contain compunds that can breakdown into cyanide in your body. That
said, There were a few reports deaths.

Check out the article he

I wish the local alternative paper carrier that column - News of the

I ate some raw ones yesterday but i am not taking a chnace and so
roast them. Will try microave mehtis first; I forgot about that option
I got:.

"Put them in a heat safe bowl with a little butter and salt.
Microwave
on high for 1 minute. Stir. Continue to nuke in 30-45 second bursts,
stirring after each, until you achieve the desired level of
roastiness. "

Another way is..
"Just put on a cookie sheet at that temp for about 10 minutes, until
light brown. If you want to remove the skins first, blanch in boiling
water for 30 seconds, and then put in ice water to stop the cooking.
The skins will slip right off."

You're not "taking a chance" by eating them raw. They're perfectly
edible.

Not the same as reading it in the City Paper (in DC), or LEO (in
Louisville where I live now) while grabbing lunch.

Read it while ya can, those alternative weeklies will soon be history. The
Chicago _Reader_ here is a pitiful thing, down to one pathetic thin section
from a fat three not so long ago. I used to read the _City Paper_ online, I
need to check it out again...

Of course the local Chicago noozepapers - _Tribune_ and _Sun - Times_ - are
not much better, they are getting thinner by the day it seems. Rumor is
that one will tank, the Tribune Company declared bankruptcy and the Sun -
Times group has announced huge losses.

The Trib "revamped" itself recently and now the front - main nooze section
is primarily soft "feature" articles and many of the articles are just
thinly - disguised "man in the street" blog - ish collections of opinions.
As for myself and many others I know, I like to read informed, cogent, news
reports, not puff pieces. And they wonder why they are losing money...

And so it goes...
