I bought some "Chicken of the Sea" brand tuna day before yesterday and
noted they are up to $.78 per can. I used to be able to get them for $.49 a couple of years ago. It's been awhile since I bought tuna. Generic is the same price and I prefer the taste of CotS. When I opened it, the damned thing is 1/2 liquid! It never used to be that way. :-( As far as I remember, the oz. per can on the label is the same. I'm going to e-mail the company and gripe... Go ahead and at least keep the darned price the same if you are going to lower package quantity! Or keep the quality and raise the price. Geeze! -- Peace! Om "Any ship can be a minesweeper. I did that with Green Giant when I was disgusted with the amount of stems in a package of brocolli. Nothing like the picture on the bag. They sent me coupons for free bags, that I used to buy their corn. At least it's all corn....Sharon in Canada |

I'll have to open my can of Bumble Bee and see if its half liquid too. I'm not a Chicken of the Sea fan anymore. It seems the flavor of tuna is not what I remember or like. I quit buying the cans years ago for the same reason. I only purchase the packages that are vacuum sealed now. Costs more, yeah. But there is more fish and no filler. Plus, the quality of the product seems (and tastes) better. I must add though that since we have access to fresh fish day in and day out, I don't buy packaged tuna nearly as much as I did in landlocked Oklahoma. With the price of quality canned cat food, you might as well give the kitties your canned tuna! They'll love ya for it! ;-) --Lin |

I just happen to have some COS tuna on hand, will check for the excess waterage. I did notice that the COS is 5oz instead of the usual 6oz - a 17% shrinkage. Funny, I never noticed that before... Speaking of which: Unka Dave's Smoked Ahi Spread - Can tuna - drained of excess waterage or oilage - Liquid smoke - Mayo - Dash hot sauce - Salt and pepper to taste - MSG, if you dare Mix the ingredients together according to your taste. My suggestion is to use 1/2 teaspoon liquid smoke per small can tuna. I like to add some dehydrated onions to the mix straight from the jar, it adds a nice texture - sorta like course salt crystals without the salt. Do not add pickle relish, do not use this in a sandwich - that would be awful! Instead, spread on crackers and kick back. You can mix in capers if you like. |

I'd never thought of using smoke flavor but otherwise it's pretty close to what I'd call tuna salad even if I would use finely chopped onion and perhaps a little lemon juice. I usually pour a little lemon juice over the tuna before draining and that's enough. The lemon tends to reduce any fishy taste. -- James Silverton Potomac, Maryland Email, with obvious alterations: not.jim.silverton.at.verizon.not |

I'll try the lemon juice tip next time I make tuna salad although, probably not with this recipe as a smoky fishy taste is desirable. This is my cheapo repro of a smoked ahi spread that used to be in stores here. I think it's a pretty good simulation although I'd rather get the real thing. :-) > > -- > > James Silverton > Potomac, Maryland > > Email, with obvious alterations: not.jim.silverton.at.verizon.not |

Never thought of adding liquid smoke to tuna. I do have some on hand. I bought the Tuna for Selene. She's not been feeling well and is on antibiotics. Canned people Tuna is not the best food, but I'm trying to get her to eat anything I can. And it'll stimulate her appetite to eat some Hills A&D to try to get some weight back on her. She is a favored cat and I'm not looking forward to losing her. :-( She's about 13. She has an autoimmune issue that makes her mouth hurt and get infected easily. The vet has had no luck in treating it. The other thing she will sometimes eat is raw chicken livers. She's skin and bones right now. It sucks. I'm just trying to keep her alive as long as I can... -- Peace! Om "Any ship can be a minesweeper. Once." -- Anonymous |

We would like to put some weight on her but that's proving to be tough. Strangely enough, she has a prescription for pot THC pills. These are supposed to stimulate her appetite - it's the wackiest thing I've ever heard of. The doc said it also would probably help with her disposition. That would be nice... Good luck with your cat. |

Good luck with your cat. Marinol is the name of the drug. It is sometimes prescribed for AIDS or Cancer patients to help them develop an appetite. But it doesn't work for everyone <shrug> Another medication (a steroid) called Megace might be worth asking your MD about if the Marinol doesn't work. |

Good luck with your cat. Thanks, and good luck with your mother in law! The way the prices etc. are going, I may just switch to fresh! It's about $7.00 per lb. but might end up being worth it. I bought this stuff for Selene anyway to try to get some calories into her. She went after it eagerly. Right now tho', she's snarfing down on some raw chicken livers which is even more nutritious for her. :-) -- Peace! Om "Any ship can be a minesweeper. Once." -- Anonymous |
