Default Aero Garden sprouts

The first sprouts are showing. They started sprouting on Tuesday.

The basil

Thyme

I had an old clove of garlic so I planted it, and it has grown
probably 2 inches. It gets the benefit of the grow lights also.

Very cool!

I got one of these for Christmas and it's amazing how quickly the seeds
sprout. Our plants have been growing just over two weeks and the tomato
plant is already about 5" high with quite a few leaves. The herbs are
smaller but still quite sturdy and have a number of leaves on them.
Much, much better than anything I've been able to grow in pots indoors
or out.

How fun. :-)
It'll only get better from here I'm sure! The sprouts are showing no
sign of bolting.

Hey Koko, when you post these updates, could you note the number of days
they've been percolating? i.e. is this day 6? Or... ??

Thanks!

I got one for my wife. She is a BIG salad fan (every nite). The
Aerogrow has been producing some outstanding lettuce.

I "planted" Buttercrunch lettuce about 5 weeks ago. She has already
"harvested" it twice and at present, the lettuce is about 6" - 7" tall
again.

If you like fresh lettuce, herbs or cherry tomatoes during the winter,
this is very hard to beat.

Thanks marcella. I'm happy to hear about your experiences with the
Aero Garden. This is new to me and I'm enjoying it a lot.

Great idea TammyM. They started sprouting on Tuesday but I didn't take
the photos until yesterday. At this stage it was 4 days.

Also, note the ambient temperature and the lot number of
the seed packets, which you should already be recording
in your lab notebook. You _are_ keeping a lab notebook,
are you not? By the way, I haven't seen your homework
assignment. You're not going to be late, are you? :-)

Yeah but, I live in the part of San Diego county that up until this
week I was scraping ice off my windshield in the morning.
Who'd a thunk a San Diego girl would have an ice scraper in her car.

I looked at then today and got the impression that you can only grow
one type pf crop at a time, even if there is space for six "pods".
The one I saw had various settings (for the lights?) that allowed you to
set them for herbs, tomatoes, lettuce, flowers, etc.

Was this a correct assumption?

Another thing tat turned me off was the price of the seed pods--$20 for
each type of seed? Yikes.

After paying $100+ for the growing platform (on sale) the thought of
paying an additional $20 each for tomatoes, lettuce, and herbs was more
than a little off-putting for me. he lady who was also looking was
thrilled when I offered her some of my 20% off coupons, however.

I may yet talk myself into the purchase...or not.

You can override the pre-set lighting system and turn them on and off
at your discretion. Some flowers and vegetables require a daily dark
period to produce flowers.
I think they are trying to make it idot proof for people like me.

They have a gardening kit so you can use your own seeds if you want.

I'm using it for convenience not for cost savings.

After this, can you use any seeds, or do you have to buy their special

Some plants are also sensitive to temperature, especially when flowering
and setting fruit. I don't know if this is a problem or not.

You can mix some things. They sell a "salsa" one with tomatoes and
jalapenos in it together.

The instruction book tells you what kinds of plants have similar needs
in terms of lighting, fertilizer and how many hours of the pump running.
So, you could combine those similar plants.

We decided to live dangerously :-) and combined 1 cherry tomato, 1
serrano chile, 1 cilantro and 1 italian parsley. The herbs apparently
don't like the pump running as much as the others but it was close
enough that we decided to try it. We only used four seeds of each herb
so if they die off it isn't much of a loss.

Mine came with a years worth of empty pods and fertilizer. We then used
our own seeds for planting.

It is awfully fun to check them every day and see how much they've grown.

you can use your own seeds in.

By "they", do you mean Aerogrow?
I guess my question is, after you lay out the cash for the machine,
are you married to the company and their ridiculous prices ($20 for
seeds), or can you just buy seeds and put them into the sponges?

And the same goes for nutrients. Are there alternatives for their
"super special" tablets?

There are obviously alot of us interested in your purchase. :-)

Apparently their price point is still in the neighborhood of luxury
item. I'm real close. I love to cook, and it sucks to use dried
herbs all Winter after using fresh that I've grown for pennies all
Summer.

Try freezing your fresh herbs inside of ice cubes.
I've not tried that, but I have read about it.

An alternative would be to discover how to keep some of those summer
plants alive when brought indoors WITHOUT the expensive setup.

Actually, it looks to me like the Aero Garden she has would save money.
If you have to pay what I pay for water, you'd see what I mean. I've
not gardened now for the past few years due to water costs. It's cheaper
to buy stuff at the grocery store than to grow it. :-(

I've been slowly putting in native plants as landscaping so I don't have
to water!

More little guys are showing up 6 days after planting.

and dill

Last week when I set up the Aero Garden the old clove of garlic I
planted on a whim just kinda hung out around the sink.

This is how much it has grown in just 6 days hanging out around the
grow lite.

Watching garlic grow. Tell me I don't have an exciting life. ;-)

If you catch it in time, you will have green garlic. And green garlic
is great in some dishes.

I've always taken pleasure in watching plants grow. :-)
You are not alone!

There is currently an Amaryllis at work that one of my co-workers
brought in. I'm helping her care for it.

2 weeks ago it was just a fat bulb. The blooms from the first of 2 bloom
stalks are currently "peeking". It's over 12" tall now. She has a grow
light for it.

LOL!

Bright side, it could be exciting in a horrible way, like mine has
been.

Enjoy watching garlic grow and enjoy no traumatic brain injuries for
your loved ones.

I'd love to be bored. :-)

I have one growing right now, too. It's fun to see them
sprout like magic, they grow so fast. I forget what color
I ordered, so it'll be a surprise.

Sometimes "routine" is a good thing.
Hope your outcome is good Mitch for whatever is troubling you!

I need to plant a few more in the front driveway flower beds. :-) I
might stick a few tiger lillies in there too.

I've always planted Easter lillie bulbs once they were done blooming and
the last one lasted 4 years.

They are fun.

Good luck with your bulb!

So sorry for what you have been having to suffer. Thanks for reminding
me to treasure the mundane things in life.

Oh, that's hilarious, people can grow them outside?
They are strictly a houseplant up here.

I love those, I don't know why people don't.

I'm planting lilies this year. I'm tearing out some landscaping
and starting over.
