Very cool!
I got one of these for Christmas and it's amazing how quickly the seeds sprout. Our plants have been growing just over two weeks and the tomato plant is already about 5" high with quite a few leaves. The herbs are smaller but still quite sturdy and have a number of leaves on them. Much, much better than anything I've been able to grow in pots indoors or out. marcella In article >, koko > wrote: > The first sprouts are showing. Ted shuffled out of his cave and grunted these great (and sometimes not
so great) words of knowledge: > The first sprouts are showing. She is a BIG salad fan (every nite). The Aerogrow has been producing some outstanding lettuce. I "planted" Buttercrunch lettuce about 5 weeks ago. She has already "harvested" it twice and at present, the lettuce is about 6" - 7" tall again. If you like fresh lettuce, herbs or cherry tomatoes during the winter, this is very hard to beat. |

Also, note the ambient temperature and the lot number of the seed packets, which you should already be recording in your lab notebook. You _are_ keeping a lab notebook, are you not? I looked at then today and got the impression that you can only grow one type pf crop at a time, even if there is space for six "pods". The one I saw had various settings (for the lights?) that allowed you to set them for herbs, tomatoes, lettuce, flowers, etc. Was this a correct assumption? Another thing tat turned me off was the price of the seed pods--$20 for each type of seed? Yikes. After paying $100+ for the growing platform (on sale) the thought of paying an additional $20 each for tomatoes, lettuce, and herbs was more than a little off-putting for me. he lady who was also looking was thrilled when I offered her some of my 20% off coupons, however. I may yet talk myself into the purchase...or not. gloria p |

After this, can you use any seeds, or do you have to buy their special

You can mix some things. They sell a "salsa" one with tomatoes and jalapenos in it together. The instruction book tells you what kinds of plants have similar needs in terms of lighting, fertilizer and how many hours of the pump running. So, you could combine those similar plants. We decided to live dangerously :-) and combined 1 cherry tomato, 1 serrano chile, 1 cilantro and 1 italian parsley. The herbs apparently don't like the pump running as much as the others but it was close enough that we decided to try it. We only used four seeds of each herb so if they die off it isn't much of a loss. > > Another thing tat turned me off was the price of the seed pods--$20 for > each type of seed? Yikes. Mine came with a years worth of empty pods and fertilizer. We then used our own seeds for planting. It is awfully fun to check them every day and see how much they've grown. marcella |

![]() >They have kits available that has the planting material and pods that >you can use your own seeds in. > By "they", do you mean Aerogrow? I guess my question is, after you lay out the cash for the machine, are you married to the company and their ridiculous prices ($20 for seeds), or can you just buy seeds and put them into the sponges? If you have to pay what I pay for water, you'd see what I mean. I've not gardened now for the past few years due to water costs.
