Default Inauguration Lunch?

So what are those of us who are celebrating going to have for lunch on
Tuesday? The best I can come up with is Chicago deep-dish pizza from Uno via
Dining In. Someone has to have a better idea.

Barack and Michelle had dinner last night at Equinox, which is
reportedly around the corner from Blair House. The menu is he
http://www.equinoxrestaurant.com/men...nox_dinner.pdf

For starters, I'd probably go with the Cream of Parsnip and Granny
Smith Apple Soup with In-House Duck Confit, Roasted Shallots and Apple
Julienne

Next, would be the Grilled Striploin of All Natural Beef with Slow
Roasted Potato Pave, English Walnut Butter and Wilted Arrowleaf
Spinach

Then I'd finish with the Bittersweet Chocolate-Praline Terrine with
White Chocolate Quenelle, Gianduja Chocolate Sauce, and Crispy Cocoa
Tuille

These things are offered on the dinner menu, though. Lunch is out
there someplace nearby. I wonder what he ordered?

Anyhow, I'd like to drink a bottle or two of Audacity of Hops brew.
It's an "inauguale," or so I've read:
http://humblegourmand.com/blog/2009/...es-inaugurale/
Note that it's flavored with coffee -- beans from Kenya, Hawaii, and
Indonesia -- and with "Progress" and "Liberty" hops, which allegedly
are varieties of hops. I wouldn't know.

Very close to half the population of the US will not be celebrating. I
expect close to 100% are hoping for the best however.

It's pretty sad how the perception of the election is drastically
different when the reality is that it was only a few percent further
apart than the election folks still haven't stopped bitching about.
Those few percent can largely be attributed to those voting based on the
novelty factor of making a historic election, and not on political
positions.

The US is no less divided than it was in 2000, and unless something
dramatic happens (a president with a permanent tan isn't dramatic), I
don't see any sort of national cohesion forming to bring the masses in
from the polarized extremes.
It's a scary thought to imagine how W.W.II would have turned out if the
US population was as polarized as it is today. Today we face challenges
at least as great as those in W.W.II and the future does not look good
no matter who we have in the White House.

I'd go for Chicago style hot dogs, complete with the irredescent green
relish.

I'd go with the Chef's Market Menu, mainly because this is the time of year
for short ribs, and they don't appear on the regular menu:

Cream of Parsnip and Granny Smith Apple Soup with In-House Duck Confit
Roasted Shallots, and Apple Julienne

Pan Fried Rappahannock Oysters with Caper-Parsley Butter, Celery Root Puree,
Golden Pineapple, and Celery Leaf Salad

36 Hour Braised Beef Shortribs with Potato Mousseline, Path Valley "Sugar
Snax" Carrots, and Red Wine Braising Jus

Roasted Medallions of Marcho Farms Veal Loin with Parsnip Mousseline,
Caramelized Cauliflower, and Grilled Oyster Mushrooms

Puff Pastry "Cannoli" with Passionfruit Pastry Cream, Moscato-Scented
Pomegranate, and Kiwi

Yeah. At least bumble bees die after they sting you. Wasps can get you
again and again.
>
> At least we don't have hornets here.

I watched my idiot sister throw a green walnut at a hornet's nest. I
guess I was about twelve so she'd have been 10 or 11.

I don't think she thought she'd actually hit it but she did. Pegged it
dead center. So all thee hornets come boiling out and both of us were
already backing up. But this one hornet must've been watching because
he, erm, made a bee line towards her. Came straight in like a bullet
and stung her right between the eyebrows.

She looked like an incipient unicorn for a couple three days but I'd say
she got off easy.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hornet

Actions to avoid

* Disturbing a nest (including vibrations and loud noises)
* Being within a few meters of a nest
* Disturbing or killing a hornet within a few meters of a nest
* Blocking the path of a hornet
* Breathing on the nest or hornet
* Rapid air movements

Err... "breathing on the nest or hornet"??

Second reply. Here's the menu for the official Senate luncheon the
day of the inauguration:

The Appetizer: Seafood Stew accompanied by Duckhorn Vineyards, 2007
Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley.

The Entree: Brace of American birds (pheasant and duck), served with
Sour Cherry Chutney and Molasses Sweet Potatoes and accompanied by
Goldeneye, 2005 Pinot Noir, Anderson Valley.

Dessert: Apple Cinnamon Sponge Cake and Sweet Cream Glacé , with
Korbel Natural “Special Inaugural Cuvée,” California Champagne.

I'll be at work - it's a PD day. Food will be catered in, but no deep
dish pizza or anything else that remotely reminds anyone of Chicago.

Thats actually pretty accurate. 47% of the voters didn't vote for the
new guy. All I can see is that both the read and blue teams do their
best to work for their owners to the disadvantage of the electorate.

I really have to wonder why the inuaguration of a U.S. President influences
your choices for lunch on that day. Did you have something special for
lunch the day Jimmy Carter was sworn in? How silly.

Don't you wish you could just inhale the same air as Obama does?

Frankly, no. Who gives a rats ass what we eat for lunch that day?! It's a
Tuesday. Same as any other day. I'll probably make chicken noodle soup,
curl up on the couch and read a book. It's only an "event" at the White
House.

Fair enough. You don't like Obama?
btw, I am not a troll and I like American opinions.
I guess the future of Australia & New Zealand is dictated by America.
Hopefully Obama is up to the challenge.

Tripe pizza. Sounds good.

Umble pie in its literal sense is a filled pastry similar to many respects
to a Cornish pasty. The popularity of the dish umble pie among 15th and 16th
century commoners in Britain gave rise to the expression "eating humble
pie". [1]

Although the original umble pies contained mostly tripe they later evolved
to a form which might contain fruit and sweetening, often without meat.

Why? Do his farts smell better than mine?

Lunch Tuesday will probably be leftovers from dinner Monday. That would
apply if McCain or Jeb was being sworn in. Maybe I'd snack on an elephant
ear if it was Ross Perot.

Is that really Jill McQuown's post or a forger? If the former, it's no
sillier than most of the crap discussions that happen here and is no
sillier or no more outrageous than anyone announcing what their
SuperBowl party menu or their Academy Awards-watching party will be.
Good lord!!

If the latter, don't be such a prick.

Get the recipes he http://inaugural.senate.gov/luncheon/ (download a
PDF). The sour cherry chutney sounds good ‹ except that IT'S MADE WITH
CANNED BING CHERRIES!! I'M TELLIN'!!

I wonder if anyone ever gets tiddly and/or unruly and has to be removed
from the dining room after all that wine.

Oooh, nice. There must be something in that list that I can whip up for
lunch. Laying my hands on that china might be a bit of a scramble, though.

Here's the menu for the Senate Luncheon:

I hadn't really thought about it, but maybe I WILL do something
special.

When Jimmy Carter was sworn in I did a Suth'n lunch involving g-r-i-t-s.
Silly, yes, but we take our fun where we find it!

Asian markets, at least those that stock meats, would be good for
that. :-)

Gee, the above makes me wonder whether there might be a special
"Obama" coffee blend?
