I've had a couple of friends 'introduce' me to several 'Facebook'
lookalikes....... I initially joined just to make them happy, but when I
started to receive emails of "So-and-so from (whatever book) wants you to
be her friend" purely because somewhere down the track, their path happened
to cross with someone from my friends' pages, and they automatically try
and sign everyone up from all the different pages, so that they can show
their 'mates' how many online 'friends' they have.

So I deleted all entries in any and all facebook-like pages.... or so I
thought. I just did the last one then.

That describes the 50% of females who are not buxom blondes.
What bugs me there are the silly things that get sent out continually.
People who are into it don't pick who they send them to, they just select
all their contacts.

Are you in the Italy group?

The guy was obviously an idiot - you can adjust the privacy settings on
your profile so that not everyone can see everything. For a prospective
employer to see my profile they would have to be one of my friends. And I'm
not one of those who just confirms every friend request - unless I know you
in real life or through another forum I've been in for some time, you don't
go on my friends list.

You can also control which friends can see which things - so that it's
possible to keep work "friends" from seeing some things that your other
friends see.

Yes you can adjust privacy settings. My friends are all people I either
know in real life (largely from work) or through forums I've belonged to
for a while.

I enjoy being silly with some of them and it's a handy way to keep in touch
with some others. Great way to share photos etc. There are games I
sometimes enjoy playing too.

I've known a person for years on Usenet (that some of you know too!) and as
the relationship deepened it was finally revealed to me that the person was a
neo-nazi. I quickly, quietly and firmly put an end to the relationship. Shook
me to the core after so long of a friendship. I'm glad we never met and that
I kept my privacy "close to the vest."

I don't trust anyone other than friends and family!!!

Other than trying to keep a friendly online demeanor, nothing is left to be
trusted! Learned that lesson!

Methinks "50% of the females who are not buxom blondes" would pay BIG bucks
to be as that girl, trust me

That's what I call "a spammer" and have got rid of many while I was on
myspace. It they'll appear also on facebook I already know how to deal with
them

> Are you in the Italy group?

Don't know how it's translated in english but yes, I'm in the Italy
"network". To search for persons in other networks I can't use "search for
profile" but can get there with the normal "search by name or email".

I know exactly what you mean, I'm pretty good at ****ing people off too
<grin>.

A lot of people I know personally (both family and friends) have signed
up for Facebook and seem to enjoy it. I know they have 'privacy
settings' but wasn't there a big hoo-ha about Myspace or one of the
similar sites being 'compromised' a year or three ago? What's to say it
won't happen again?. No, thankyewverymuch. And no, I am NOT
paranoid... ;-)

Facebook was founded by a couple of Harvard students, one of whom did launch
it into a business. Personally I think I'm a tad too old for Facebook.

Myspace preceded Facebook. MS was basically highschool based while FB
developed to cater to the college crowd. They both were pushed to make
money for their creators and succeeded brilliantly. Neither pioneered the
concept and there are dozens of wannabe imitators. The medium we are using
now, usenet (newsgroups), preceeded them both.

It does point out that our internet lives are no longer always separate
from our work lives. My wife is on a school board, and a few years back
she was looking at an application for employment that she was being
asked to approve at the next board meeting. She punched in the name on
her computer, and lots of information came out, some of it very bad.
She called the school district to have them check it out. The applicant
was not hired, for other reasons, but my wife has suggested that an
internet search be added to the screening process for all applicants.

Yet you have time to cook up those exotic dishes and post to this (and
who knows how many others) group. Anyone who spends that much time away
from home must live on fast food, closeted Jerry.

Not the issue. Nobody who spends as much time online as Steve does (and *I*
do, for that matter) is getting a whole lot of quality face time with
people. That's the issue.

It'll be possibly April before we get back online (gotta pay the past
due bill and buy another car), but I'll add you guys as soon as I get
my new password, I joined maybe a week or two before we moved, so my
page isn't too exciting. My MySpace page is much better. We have
young adults (2 now) living with us, and we/re considered cool for
"old people," so we're friends with a few local kids, as well as our
own offspring. I've slso found some old high school friends there.

I suppose if people want to keep in touch in the meantime, they could
use this e-mail address. I don't get on the laptop very often, but
I'll start checking this address from time to time.
