Default Do you use disposable gloves during cooking?

They give some protection against heat but I use them specially when
cutting onions or garlic. Much easier than trying to get the smell
off your hands.

My hands are in water so often, the smell comes right off. I have
nitrile gloves here at home, the ones that are blue/pink/purple. After
I use them, I put them in the washer with my colored clothes and I put
them in the dryer. They come out looking new.

They are really good for cutting up hot peppers. If I don't have any and
have to dice some jalapeños, I cover my hands with fold-over sandwich
bags (people who have little dogs, usually have these little bags)

Not me. The world already has more trash than it needs. I just wash my
hands when I am doing handling food. NBD.

No. I'm not afraid of touching my food and my hands wash up easily after
touching anything sticky, stinky or slimey.

I must have skin like an elephant or something? Peppers don't bother my
hands.

I don't need one (or two) more things to worry about keeping clean for
cooking and personally think they'd be awkward. I've never been
overwhelmed by the smell of onion or garlic on my fingers after chopping.

They'd certainly bother other parts of your body if you touched yourself
with them :-)

And I have once years ago-accidentally touched my eyes. Woooweee that
was painful. Yet haven't had that mishap happen again and don't seem to
find peppers particularly painful to my hands.

Samesame. I can cut them all day without any effect to my hands, but all
you have to do is forget what you're doing for a few seconds, or just
dry your hands on paper towel/cloth, and go to scratch yourself
inadvertantly (as guys do!!) and then you suddenly remember what it was
you were cutting up :-)

It's not what they do to your hands. It's the more sensitive parts
of your body your hands may subsequently come in contact with.

Also, all peppers are not alike.

Trimming jalapenos is one thing. Never needed gloves for this. Habaneros
are quite another story.

Even after washing my hands before taking a leak, I learned a long
time ago that you don't cut hot peppers and handle your privates. BTW
you can't wash it off your salami no matter how much soap you use.

In my case onion smell stay on my fingers for several days of hand
washing.

My DD uses them, but it's because she has eczema and she's trying to
protect her hyper-sensitive skin.

Nope, not generally. I do use them when scraping the innards out of
jalapenos to get them ready for stuffing, or when handling habaneros.

A brief scrub with benzoyl peroxide acnes soap will get rid of just
about any kind of lingering smell or stain on the hands, including,
unfortunately, mehndi.

I use them also for cutting vegetable expecially artichokes which leave your
hand black!

I use them professionally when handling raw meat. At home I like to use
them to bone cooked meats etc. for the slight heat protection, and also when
carving in the kitchen. My hand is much handier than a fork, you know.

Getting the smell off hands is easy. If you have a stainless steel
sink, rub your hands on the sink under cold running water. If you
don't, rub them (carefully) on the flat of a stainless steel knife
(again, under cold running water).

They don't bother my hands either but, from sad experience, I find that
I should not only wash my hands afterwards but scrub with a nail brush
before touching my face.

It's easier just to wear disposable gloves :-)

I buy a box of 100 gloves for about $6.95.

They last a looooooong time.

I only use them for the 'dirty' jobs.... garlic (more than 3-4 cloves),
onions (not that we use them all that often), raw meats, frigging around
with the BBQ or Weber etc.

And quite often I'll have nicks or cuts or scrapes on my hands, or I've
cut myself with the damn knife!! So they need to be covered as well.

I'm sorry since I deplore the urge to have the last word and I seem to
be doing it, but I have found that disposable gloves just seem to make
life difficult or fall off at inconvenient times :-)

I find it much easier to wash hands with stainless something held than
struggle to put gloves on and off. Waste of time and money to deal
with gloves for food prep. I DO use em tho if using steel wool.

Only when handling chile peppers. Otherwise they're clumsy and--
worse--I can't readily tell when they're yuckky. When my hands have
something on them, I know to wash them so I don't spread it to
everything
I touch. Not so with gloves.

some day you will get caught out, or forget and rub your eye.

most peppers you can get away with, but habaneros or the like can give you
a nasty surprise.

Heat? As in capsicam? surely not hot pots and pans, unless you like
the feel of melted rubber or vinyl on your fingers!

I use them when I've got a dozen cuts from work on my fingers and I'm
handling meat or fish, but mostly only when I'm going to be doing a
lot of dishes by hand.

I've recently been using them more and more for messing with garlic.
Never for onions. I chop them too quickly I guess to have any problems
with that.

The MAIN thing I use gloves for in cooking is mixing ground meat, and
lately I've started using them to cut up poultry, mainly because it
gives me a better grip.

I _always_ use them for working with ground meat. I hate getting the
grease on my hands.

Indeed.

I'm very much a tree hugger, but I do like gloves for specific uses!

And hot peppers are one of them, along with ground meats.

You must have *very* small hands, or have the wrong type of glove. I use
latex gloves that fit like the type used in operating theatres..... except
not as long.
