The Obamas have hired another chef to prepare their meals at the White
House. His name is Sam Kass and he will join Cristeta Comerford, the
White House's executive chef who remained at the post during the
transition. Kass worked for the Obamas during their time in Chicago
and will bring knowledge of their food preferences with him to the
kitchen.

At least he doesn't look like he's related to Mamma Kass :-)

Why do you think there will be dissension? What if neither of them
(Exec Chef and Chef Kass) are temperamental? :-) Wouldn't it be nice
if they could become a good team!

Did they *need* another chef though? or is that duplication of efforts
and unnecessary cost to the American people?

Did you read the article?

It said he filled a vacancy that was there.... My impression is that
he will be part of the cooking team...

there ya go then! Glad to hear it wasn't just adding to the staff but
rather filling an existing vacancy.

Maybe it won't be all that tense. Comerford is the person in charge.
Kass is just part of the help. From the Times article:

"Walter Scheib, the White House chef for the Clintons and Bushes, said
the decision to bring Mr. Kass to the White House was 'a master
stroke.' Mr. Scheib said Mr. Kass would be a tremendous resource for
Ms. Comerford, the first woman to hold the post of executive chef.

"'This will make her job much easier because she will understand
better and faster what they like,' he said. 'She doesn’t have to spend
months reading the tea leaves.'"

Incidentally, the Web site for Kass' Chicago gig is he

He's a locavore. Mostly. The diver scallops on the sample menu most
likely don't come from Lake Michigan. But the pork loin and the
chicken at least have a chance of being locally sourced.

No kidding.

> LOL... They can make a great team and still dislike one another.

In theory, I suppose. In reality, I think it's more difficult to be
cordial if you harbor an active dislike of someone and I think cordial
relationships make for better outcomes for the team. JMO. I think it
gets dicey when it's "we're civil, thank you very much ‹ what more do
you want?" :-) The stress surrounding production of state dinners
and entertaining international dignitaries could make for a lot of
unpleasant tension in the kitchen if the principals don't have a cordial
relationship. I'd kind of like to be a mouse in the cupboard when
they're cooking or planning.

Well, that's true enough, and I'm not the one questioning it. But
little drops can add up to big buckets, doncha know! Ever hear, "If you
watch your pennies, your dollars will take care of themselves"?

Keep in mind, too, that these chefs aren't just feeding the family, but
also doing the dinners for visiting heads of state and other
dignitaries. One person can't do it all for hundreds of diners.

Do they feed all the White House staff too?

I'd say ordering take-out pizzas and bagels would be frowned upon :-)

well, there is the (possibly apocryphal) quote attributed to everett
dirksen:

"A billion here, a billion there, and pretty soon you're talking real
money."

but frankly, i thought goomba's original comment was some kind of obama
sour grapes.

LOL... oh nooooooo... there are too many other reasons to be
disappointed in what Obama has done in just a couple short weeks
(choices for Treasury Secretary, CIA Director, a couple of lobbyists and
bail out concerns for example) to impose any of that on the hiring of a
chef. Adding more government employees to the payroll isn't desirable,
but as has been pointed out now this Chicago chef is filling an existing
slot already vacant. Seems perfectly reasonable to me.

Timothy Geithner is what cracks me up. Biden says paying taxes is
patriotic yet the head of the IRS didn't pay his and tried to get away
with only paying what wasn't covered by the statute of limitations.
You really gotta love all this change.

He did get away with it. He since paid (hardly voluntarily) to get his
new gig, but I see nothing about penalties? You and I would be paying
penalties out the wazoo, yet he gets a pass. Hmmmmmm.. something fishy
there, I think!

Apparently it is a common mistake. He did pay the employee portion of
his SS and Medicare taxes. What he failed to pay was the employer
portion. While he didn't have to pay any penalty, he did have to pay
interest on the amount owed.

For his self-employed income as a speaker/consultant he did pay both
portions. The problem probably stemmed from the fact that the IMF
issues its employees W-2s instead of 1099s even though they don't pay
the employer portion and don't withold the employee portion. If they
had issued 1099s, it would have been obvious that he would have needed
to file both portions. With a W-2 most people assume that the employer
portion is paid by the employer. There is nothing on a W-2 that even
mentions that there is a matching employer portion that is paid or not.

When audited for 2003-2004 he did pay the amount owed. He did not say
uh-oh and voluntarily pony up the 2001-2002 amount due. Some have said
it was because the statute of limitations had expired; but, as I
remember, once the IRS audits you and finds an error the statute of
limitations no longer applies. They can go back and audit any year.

Should he have gone back and volunteered to pay the employer portion on
the 2001-2002 income when he was audited the first time? Yes.

It didn't make much sense to me either.

In the face of $350 billion in handouts to failed financial
institutions with another $350 billion yet to go before the next round
of billions proposed to infuse some cash into our unholy mess of an
economy and in the face of $18 billion in attaboy checks going to the
morons who produced and oversaw the producers of the financial
instruments -- CMO's, CDO's, CDS's, CDO's squared and the rest of the
smart-guy alphabet of imaginary money machines they conjured into
existence -- instruments which were capable of magnifying a burst
housing bubble into the said unholy mess (not to mention the corporate
jets and massages at conferences and $87,000 area rugs and $1,400
trash cans and assorted power nose pickers and robotic armpit lickers
the assholes have charged up for themselves in the midst of a farking
depression), the salary of one cook would seem rather small beer.

That may be the longest sentence I've ever posted to Usenet.
