Here in SoCal, and the southwest, we have a chain of hot dog eateries
called Wienerschnitzel. Their hot dogs and corn dogs are fairly decent, but I usually order their deluxe cheeseburger with two large fries. Anyone here ever tried them? Cheers, Chuck Kopsho Oceanside, California |

Its great, but I wouldn't consider the Varsity a hot dog joint. In Philadelphia, the only two hot dog joints I know of closed years ago. There was Lenny's Hot Dogs in Northeast Philly, which was popular for decades. It closed, then years later, it reopened with the same menu (hot dogs and fish cakes), but in Southampton, which is a few miles north of Philly. There was also Levis' hot dogs, which was in Center City on 6th Street. Maybe a block or two a block away from where Jim's steaks is. Levis' had a store for a brief time in the Northeast, but it never did well. The original Levi's had Champ Cherry soda, which was very popular, and the country's oldest soda fountain. The menu at Levis' was similar to Lenny's. Hot dogs and fish cake sandwiches. At either place, you could get a hot dog on a bun with a fish cake smashed over it. This was a very popular sandwich at both places. I can't think of any hot dog joints now, other then the one in the student union building on Temple University's campus where the hot dogs are sold in boxes that include tater tots. The dogs there are pretty good. |

I ate at the original Nathan's hot dogs in Coney Island twice last year. Its well worth the trip in the summer if you enjoy the beach. |

An internet search shows that the Hot Dog Shoppe went out of business in 2004, but somebody gave me a recipe about 25 years ago that is supposed to be their legendary hot dog sauce. I've made it a few times and it tastes the same as I remember it. Here it is: Hot Dog Sauce 2 pounds hamburger browned and chopped and drained 2 onions diced 1/8 cup salt 1 small box chili powder 1 tablespoon ground cloves 1 tablespoon pepper 1 tablespoon nutmeg 1 small box paprika 1 1/2 pounds sugar 1 14 ounce bottle ketchup 7 cups water 1 cup flour mixed with 1 additional cup water Add all ingredients to hamburger. Simmer 2 hours, do not cover. Stir about every five minutes to keep it from sticking. Makes 5 quarts. You could cut this recipe in half as this recipe makes a lot of hot dog sauce; I make the full recipe and freeze the leftovers. The only major modification I make to the sauce is I cut the sugar to 1/2 cup because using 1 1/2 cups makes it much sweeter than I remember it being. I also put a tablespoon or so of Tabasco sauce in it just to give it a little kick. The sauce is actually very similar in taste to a southern dish known as Brunswick Stew; if you took this hot dog sauce and added some corn and shredded chicken and diced potato, you would have a pretty decent Brunswick Stew. I ate at the Varsity in Atlanta once and it was quite good. I live 30 miles from the Beacon Drive In in Spartanburg SC but have never eaten the hot dogs there but have always heard rave reviews about them; I always wind up eating the Double Chili Cheeseburger platter with half and half, which is half onion rings and half fries, which a lot of restaurants in the south do. |

I spent three years in Detroit in the mid 90's and at a lot of
Michigan Coney Dogs at National Coney Island. Those were quite good. It consisted of a hot dog bun with a slice of american cheese on it, then the hot dog, and then loose meat (browned hamburger meat) and beanless chili on top, with onions and mustard on top. Very messy; for best results use a knife and fork to eat it. I went thru the Detroit airport a couple years ago and they had a National Coney Island there, and of course I got the Coney Dog, but was disappointed in that they topped it with some type of Cheese Whiz instead of the slice of cheese. Spent a few years in Cincinnati and used to eat the chili dogs at Skyline and Gold Star and those were great. |

Michael, The National Coney Island dog sounds good (and your recipe) although airports are notorious for dumbing down traditional local cuisine! Don't EVER buy a Philly cheesesteak at Philadelphia International airport (PHL) and form an informed opinion about our famous claim to fame! OK? Best, Andy |

Haven't had these since I was a teenager in Detroit, but I remember them as
great. We used to make special trips downtown (before expressways) to get these. They're right next door to each other. If you bypassed one to enter the other, an employee stationed at the door would yell at you. It was great! American Coney Island, 114 W. It's hard to get a bad dog; even the crappiest stands seem to follow the Vienna rules, from the poppy seed bun to the celery seed on the salad. Chicago vs. Nathan's - they're both good, just very different. Now I'm near Detroit. The third half of my life. What Michael O'Donnel (or maybe I misremebered the name) described as a Coney is nothing like my experience. The thing with canned chilli, stripe of red (ketchup?) and the yellow that I couldn't desiide was supposed to represent mustard or cheese that I've been served at my last forays into this arena. They do sell lots of other stuff but they specialize in hotdogs. We also have D's Sixpacks and Dogz. They have great hotdogs of all sorts and lots of unusual beers. I tried Super Duper Wienie when I was in CT once. That was pretty good. Rick Sebak did a show about hotdogs and features places all over the country. Most of them sound great. I would like to try them if I ever get to those areas. It's not there anymore - that is, the building is still there and was supposed to open under new owners but I don't think it has yet. Now they weren't a dedicated hotdog place but they had Texas Tommies which are the world's best hotdogs! They split the dog and insert a strip of cheese, then they wrap it in bacon and deep fry it! To die for. Now that they are gone I am desolate. I was hoping the new owners would keep Texas Tommies on the menu but I wonder if the place will ever reopen - it's been several years now. Don't bother going. They suck. Top Dog is a popular sidewalk walk up window hot dog chain. A $20 cup of coffee would get you a styrofoam cup filled with marijuana buds! You have to remember to order the "$20" cup of coffee!!! In this day and age the price has probably gone up so don't be surprised by the size of your styrofoam cup! LOLOL!!! Order a hot dog at your own risk! Best, Andy |

For the benefit of the membership? Yoccos is in Allentown. I'll have to give them a try. I hope they're better the Texas Hot Dogs, also in Allentown, which is truly awful, though apparently the local populace loves them so maybe the residents of Allentown are taste-bud deficient. She just tried them for the first time when she was there last month and she raved about them. And she's not a bit hotdog fan. I sure wish I could go to Hawaii. I've never had any interest in go there but now I would go just to try a Puka Dog. And get some shave ice and a loco moco. I want real shredded cheddar on my cheese dog, not Velveeta, American cheese, or that horrid cheez whiz type cheese sauce most places use nowadays. Blecch! I was a good, all-beef, kosher frank, decent chili sauce, and real cheese and some chopped onions. And I want it on a decent fresh bun and not a steamed bun as they tend to turn all gummy once they're steamed, but maybe that's just the "Wonder Bread" type of buns. But I'd still rather have the bun lightly toasted or grilled.
