Your favorite hot dog joint?

Watching "Food Paradise: Hot Dogs" and am so very tempted!

The Varsity in Atlanta George looks like a winner!

No dedicated hot dog place in PA that I know of.

You?

Varsity is OK but not the best.
The NYC Nathans is very good.

Pink's in LA IMHO is over rated.

Tommy's in LA is great for their regular dogs but their Chili dogs are
divine!

Never did try a Tomaine Tommy's hot dog.

Pinks IS over-rated but so is Tommy's!

Any place doing authentic Chicago-style hotdogs.

Unfortunately, even some ViennaBeef....

.....vendors have started substituting VBs smaller thinner skinless franks
for the larger natural casing franks while charging the same price.
Dirtbags! If you can find a VB vendor selling the real deal, you can't go
wrong. Nirvana in a bun.

I'm not from Chicago, I don't prefer deep-dish pizza, and I think most of
the wind from The Windy City is from natives bragging about how great it is.
But, when it comes to hotdogs, no one can touch 'em.

Me, too.

I found a vendor 90 miles East of here, but the dirtbag was serving the
skinless.

I guess I'll hafta do my own. VB sells all that stuff, but don't buy the
kits, as they all include the skinless. Buy the natural casing dogs and the
other authentic fixins separately (condiment pack).

Yeah - Boars Head natural casings. Boil or BBQ - best anywhere.

But... but... there's their famous secret green-dye relish recipe. Can't
let that outta town now can ya??

I visited Chicago in 1985 on biz but we dined customers at upper crusty
$100/plate places. Imagine me, a nerd in the windy city in a suit & tie
(!!!) with a nose for junk food?!? Torture!

Oh, they'll SELL it to you. Only $18 for relish, peppers, mustard, and
celery salt. Such a deal.

I was in Chicago for one day as a snot-nosed recruit in the service. Got my
first lesson in street smarts when I was hustled for a questionable diamond
ring. Apparently, I HAD just fallen off the turnip truck.

Later, I spent Jul-Aug about 100 miles South of Chicago. You couldn't get
me back to IL at gunpoint!

Heaps of hot dogs in Australia now during the heat wave.
Best to make sure they are hydrated and have a cool place to sleep.

The Varsity is fun but the food is just okay.

My favorite is Sneaky Pete's in Birmingham for chili dogs and slaw
dogs.

Ted's Hot Dogs. Most locations are in New York State, but we're lucky
enough to have one in Tempe, Az.

Locations:
http://www.tedsonline.com/locations.php

Menu:
http://www.tedsonline.com/menu.php

All the dogs and burgers are grilled to your preference over live charcoal
while you watch.

Their onion rings are to die fork, too!

Wayne,

The "Food Paradise: Hot Dogs" TV segment gave viewers the impression that
it was solely an upstate, NY hot dog joint!

You lucky BUM!!!

WHat happened? Ted retired to Tempe?

It's a lot closer/colder up to NY and a lot farther but warmer in Tempe!

Which way do I go??? Dammit!

Best,

Andy

No it's not.

Their Chili Cheese dog is to die for.

Mustard, chili, cheese, onion(s), a big lice of tomato & sour dill pickle
slices over a bun and a good quality hot dog that "snaps" when you bite into
it.

Dimitri,

We just out of habit ate sloppy chili cheeseburgers there.

Sorry for my Tommy's hot dog irreverence!

I rarely eat hot dogs. If I do, I eat them at home, because I
want uncured hot dogs, made with decent meat, and I want a
buttered, grilled bun.

No problem - The Chili Cheeseburgers are no doubt their sig dish - way
before they ever had fries. The Tamales as well as the hot dogs are little
known but nonetheless very good quality products.

I think there are many places that are famous for one dish/product that in
fact have GREAT other dishes.

Well, if you don't already have that as an ideal, you don't know
what you are missing--which works well, since one can't find those
toasted buttered buns.

I believe one of the sons moved to Tempe years ago and opened this one.
It's been here longer that I have, and we moved here in 2000.

It's only a 20 minute drive for me to Tempe. Guess which one I go to? And
it's a beautiful 72° outside right now at 5:30pm.

OTOH, I would guess you could get to NY quicker. You do have a car heater,
don't you. :-)

My place.

Hans American Style Hotdogs, fresh soft dog rolls from the bakery, chopped
gherkins, fried onions, grated cheese, chopped jalapenos, mustard, BBQ sauce,
and tomato sauce.

The best in the South-east :-)

When I first visited Philadelphia back in... 1990 (?) we stayed at the
Walnut St. Holiday Inn and the wife (native Philadelphian) took me for a
walk around the hood. She took me to the Woolworth's (I forget where) but
it had the small "cafe corner" for breakfast and lunch with maybe 20
counter whirl-around seats. It was a step back in time!!! I LOVED it.
Forget what I ate.

Should've been preserved in the Smithsonian!!!

Andy

Wow, that brings back memories! One of my favorite lunches while slaving
away in a large law firm in downtown Newark, NJ was a Woolworth's chili
dog with mustard and raw onions, washed down by a Coke and followed by a
stick of gum before going back to the office.

It's very nice for winter, although a couple of weeks back it was in the
low 80s.

That would be summer. The hottest I recall since we moved here was 122°,
but that was in Queen Creek, a fair distance SE of Phoenix.

I spent 30 days in Chandler, just down the road from Tempe. It was in Aug
and the temp usually climbed to about 105F by 10 in the morning. After
that, it was a crapshoot on how hight it would finally go ....110 or 118.
You never knew till it got there -- but it was dry heat! An absolute joy
after the misery of 90F temps and 102% humidity in IL.

I'm not given to going out for hotdogs, but I have visited
Max's in Long Branch. They make a nice hotdog there.

Janet,

Rutt's Hut was also showcased on the "Food Paradise: Hot dog" program!

I've never been there or to Nathan's on Coney Island but WHO doesn't know
about Nathan's?!?

The wholesale club sells the natural casing Nathan's hot dogs, so I have to
practically be in a binge mood (mode?) to do the 24 (?) pack justice!

Best,

Andy
