For some reason I have been itching to try an experiment: to make
cupcakes but scatter m&m candies over the top of the batter before baking. The idea would be that the m&ms would rest on top, self- decorate the cupcakes, and obviate frosting. Before I try this, has anyone already done it? Would the ms stay on top, or do they sink to the bottom like stones? Would something else be better to use? |

The m&ms partly dissolved, leaving streaks of candy color here and there, which did not look very nice. The chocolate centers ended up inside the cupcakes. However, they were still edible, so no materials were wasted in the experiment. |

They tend to "splinter" rather than crush. |
