Strange event this week..
The weekly circular from Ralphs (Kroger) was missing from the Tuesday pile of ads in the mail box. Today there was an envelope addressed to me with the ad inside, and another piece of mail with the monthly rewards coupons/rebates. New trend? Dimitri |

They still want folks to get the flyers but the paper has lost so much of it's coverage that it isn't reaching their customers. Lynn in Fargo Used to be the art department for a daily paper in ND. |

One daily from a local city has most of its national and world news, along with editorials in the first section, and on Mondays it is usually only 8 pages. The want ads take up more space than the news. I subscribe to a national paper, but mainly for daily crosswords and puzzles. I read the local papers at the Y. However, there seems to be an ever increasing number of local weekly papers that get delivered to my house for free. They just drive by and toss them on my lawn. If I get to them before it rains they are chuck full of advertising and have flyer inserts. This leads me to suspect that while subscriptions are down, they must be convincing that having a free paper arrive at you house means that you are going to read it, so they can claim readership. At our house, most of those weeklies are brought into the house and tossed immediately into the recycling bin. |

Dimitri was getting the circulars delivered by the letter carrier in his mail box, not in his newspaper. That's how I get mine in Northern California, about a half dozen chain supermarkets, plus chain drug stores, plus Michael's, plus a bunch of pizza joints, plus... When, I'm in Portland (OR), they come in the newspaper but I rarely find them in the Mercury News (San Jose). I've never gotten one in a separately addressed envelope. I don't have a Kroger chain in NO CA that I know of. I Portland, I do have a Kroger chain (Fred Meyer). |

The newspaper and the circulars are available online, too, or you can pick one up when you walk into the store. It's nice to get an advance peek at them, though. I've noticed the supermarket sales circulars have shrunk. I used to have to flip through 6-8 pages, now it's more like 4. Jill |

In fact, if there are no circulars in the mailbox, it's safe to assume the postman missed "his appointed round"! They're still many pages long with the typical shower of coupon inserts. The maddening thing about them is even if I don't want to look through them, I do, looking for actual mail that may have slipped into the pages. I can't remember the last time it happened but it's a force of habit. Dammit! Andy |

When I had the paper delivered daily, I would get them with my Thursday paper. As soon as I stopped the daily delivery, the circulars appeared in my mail. They must have some kind of arrangement - the paper and the grocery stores.... Thursday is the DH's favorite day. He loves to read the circulars to figure out where the best deals are. I know - very exciting. Tracy |

For some reason, they decided to stop the free delivery of the weekly Journal here. It now costs $20 a year. That's not a huge sum, but in a time when newspaper readership is down and the economy is not strong, they decide to do that? It made little sense. I used to actually enjoy that paper because it had a robust food section. Over the past couple of years they reduced it drastically, finally combining it with another section. The last few months before free delivery was cut off the food portion was down to half a page or so. Brian -- Day 2 of the "no grouchy usenet posts" project |

Impressive! Not really. There are two town weekly papers with a few articles on local news and coverage of town issues, kids sports and a bunch of ads. Then there are some regional weekly papers that have very little news, but mostly ads and they come with a bunch of flyers. I just toss them into the recycling bin. |

On of the town papers is sold in stores for 15 cents, or you can subscribe, but they deliver it to everyone's mail box for free anyway, so I don't know who is dumb enough to buy it. They also leave stacks of them in the library and in local coffee shops. > I used to actually enjoy that paper because it had a robust food > section. One of them was from one of my favourite restaurants, but they always seemed incomplete. They would have am ingredient but then no mention of where it goes in. Another was from a local steak house, and the recipes were so crappy I was reluctant to go to the restaurant. > > > Brian > |

Peter lucas is by definition a sociopath (not merely name-calling here). Any period of time goes by and people on this group (or elsewhere) don't pay enough attention to him - that is when the flood of copy and pasted crap from lucas floods the group. Just observe the pattern for yourself, it's quite plain to see once you're aware of it. |
