What makes you think he's a drug addict? Maybe he was smoking
tobacco...

It's quite sad...there are so many other things that are worse and
legal. I wonder how many Kelloggs executives inbibe, or if they just
stick to a 3 martini lunch...

And yet the difference is "legal" versus "illegal".
That alone is enough reason for Kellog's to drop Phelps, no matter if
they all toke up at the end of the day. People who are put up as revered
or heroes have the burden of living up to a higher standard.
Otherwise...they'd just be like you and me. Right?

I might add, probably (with some certainty) that some of Kelloggs food
additives and preservatives are and never have been healthy to humans. Pot
(sorry! calling the kettle black?!!

Sure. Swimming Phelps and snowboarding champ Russ Ribliana have
demonstrated that you can smoke pot and still excel.

Maybe. Maybe not? We don't know if he abstained during training, and now
that he's not training he was a party animal?

LOL!!!

Which is why he's on International TV/media admitting it was dope!!

http://www.news.com.au/story/0,,24994930-401,00.html

The tabloid quoted a partygoer as saying: "You could tell Michael had
smoked before. He grabbed the bong and a lighter and knew exactly what to
do.

"He looked just as natural with a bong in his hands as he does swimming in
the pool. He was the gold medal winner of bong hits.

I did. He's a supposed 'role model' for the up and coming generation.

Not anymore.

There was a lucrative sponsorship market he could have milked.

Use them, and his (now defunct) 'good standing' to promote a healthy
lifestyle to the younger generation coming up.

I have. They all disgust me. It's like..... "I'm famous, I can do whatever
I want and not have to worry about it".

We have had mopre than a few Rugby League players over here that had the
world at their feet as far as career choices go. Then their heads got too
damn big and they thought they were 'Gods' and could do no wrong.

Quite a few of them used to be my favourite players. As soon as they
displayed their boorish/stupid behaviour (drug/alcohol offences), I was
the first one calling for them to be banned from *all* sports, for life.

You asked me if I agreed with you that Phelps was being 'hard done by', I
disagreed. Build a bridge and get over it.

If you don't want someone to disagree with you, don't ask for peoples
opinions.

It's quite sad, and also quite telling, that you would side with the rfc's #2

I think merryb has a Phelps 'thing' going on, and in her eyes, he can do
anything he likes without consequence.

Tobacco would be frowned upon - whereas using Cannabis makes him a "drug
addict". Surely you can see the distinction? ;-)

Yep.

One certain naturally occuring drug doesnt benefit the pharmacutical
corporations, whereas many more really harmful drugs (which they produce
sell) DO benefit them and are apparently acceptable, or at least
overlooked. Now I wonder why that is?

You can't have it both ways Goomba. If you really wish to objective,
investigate the facts about Cannabis and it's effects (both good and bad)
from an impartial source. It's laughable that it is so irrationally
demonised when there are so many more harmful compounds in manufactured
food which are deemed 'okay'. And they're not even classed as "drugs" for
the most part, i.e fluoride.

Indeed...

So many, many things worse - like aspartame (sp) for example.
Or the plethora of preservatives, stabilisers, etc. The FDA is so
consistently one-sided - it all seems to depends on who has the deepest
pockets as to what is deemed acceptable and unacceptable.

Some of the 'opposers' have a point though. Such as Goomba's "legal"
versus "illegal" comment. Phelps /did/ agree to all the shallow Kellogs
promotional stuff, so you can argue that Phelps voluntarily (so far as I
know)made his bed with them.

Kellog's public position still doesn't wash with me, though.
I guess I make a very bad consumer...

That is his pathology. A lot of folk here presumably think some of us are
merely name-calling on this topic, but some of us at least know and are
serious about that aspect of mr lucas.

It really has nothing to do with whether pot is good or bad. Phelps was
under contract, and being paid, to project a certain image. He defaulted on
that contract. Kelloggs has an image worth many millions of dollars to
protect. I think they did what they thought they had to, to protect that
image.

Peter,

Yes you are.

In SA, Australia, (Queensland?) you're legally allowed to grow and possess
100g of marijuana. I know this from experience!

Kelloggs aside, who was the last Olympic swimmer to make it big in
endorsements?

Mark Spitz, 1968? He disappeared immediately after, as well. And him,
BEFORE the world scrutiny of drug testing!

Phelps had his moment in the sun and he DID milk his share of endorsements
already!

To add another spin to the "Bong of Phelps," If he bong'd in SA, Australia
and got photographed there, what's wrong with that? BTW, where was he
photographed?

Sure Kellogg can pick and choose who they sponsor for "the almighty dollar
returns" but I don't care. Their products are over-processed and are worse
for human consumption than marijuana ever will be.

The endorsements are probably rolling in again. Let's just wait and see.

He's still an Olympic champion!!! His gold medal record will stand beyond a
few liftimes (I'm guessing).

Kelloggs can take away an endorsement but NOBODY can take away his
accomplishments!!!

Kelloggs cut off it's nose to spite it's face, imho.

Best,

Andy

You and I don't get paid millions to have our picture put on a cereal
box. When you accept that check, you're supposedly accepting what goes
along with it.
I don't have any particular sympathy for Phelps. He's at least man
enough to take his lumps and move on. I have yet to hear him whine about
it, so why should anyone else whine on his behalf?
