Late Friday night there were three serious fires in Ottawa that gutted a
number of commercial buildings. One of them was at my nephew's video store. The fire started in a hair salon and spa upstairs but his shop was totally destroyed. What didn't burn was damaged by smoke and water. It was arson. This came at an especially hard time for my nephew and his wife. She had just quit a good paying job to work full time in the store. Luckily, they had insurance and are planning to re-open, but it will be a few months before they can open up again. They haven't even been able to get into the building to see how bad things are. Early the next morning, Ottawa police were called to a disturbance at a hotel in the city hotel and arrested 5 men. One of them had serious burns to 90% of his body. At least two of them have now been charged with arson. |

Besides seeing the damage they are inflicting, they also get an adrenalin fix from evading the law. (much like graffiti artists etc) So we need to find another less destructive way for them to get their adrenalin fix. Also, a confidential hotline needs to be set up for them to call if they get the urge. I hate to say it, but it is a disease, one that will only be cured when we find out what makes these people tick. |

If he has Business Interruption insurance and a good private adjuster, he will be OK financially. The 5% you pay them is well worth it. The arsonist seems to be getting what he deserves too. Get some perspective. Oh yes. I have been burned many, many times. I had a summer job in an alloy smelting plant and got burned almost every day, not to mention burns from cooking, and working around hot equipment. When people light fires to destroy people's homes and businesses they are bound to cause tremendous damage, not to mention the chances of burning or killing people and pets. I have no sympathy for an arsonist who ends up getting hurt in the commission of his crimes. |

We had a local house fire last week, caused by a burglar trying to rob the place. Said perp died in that fire; none of the occupants were at home at the time. |

I just don't see a guy breaking into a upstairs nail salon, setting it on fire, then wallowing around in the resulting fire just for some sort of perverse sexual gratification. Is there any relation ot the nail salon fire? Better yet - dis there anything about tis that is food related, or do you just not have any friends to talk to about this stunning revelation? ObFood: Poor-mans canned salmon (that would be mackeral) and American cheese sandwich for lunch. It seemed like what I wanted to eat at the time... -sw |

Meanwhile taxpayers will be footing the bill for the extensive skin-grafting. A guy here in Austin literally burst into flames trying to steal live copper wire from, of all places, an electrical substation. Duh. While the crime itself is minor, he was Life-Lined to San Antonio where they can reconstruct him while the County foots the bill for medical services. In Dave's example, the guy with 90% of burns on his body hasn't even been connected to any of the fires. They did arrest two completely unrelated suspects though. He forgot to mention that part. -sw |

Often people use flammable liquids to assist them in setting these type of fires. Experts know how to handle these flammable liquids. Many people, like me, don't. It's easy to spill liquids on yourself. I do it all the time. I don't do it with flammable liquids around large, out of control fires. -- Dan Abel Petaluma, California USA |

Absolutely bizarre. > We have not heard the last of her I'm sure. No. I am sure that we have not heard the last of her. The press won't let it die. As far as I know she is living in the Antilles. I doubt that she will be coming back to the Niagara area. That could be dangerous for her. You have to wonder about the whole family. If I had a daughter who had killed her sister she would never be allowed to darken my doorstep again. Not the Homolkas. They threw a going away party for her. The whole case was badly handled. The police had access to their house for weeks to search for evidence. Then some tapes turned up that had been hidden in the ceiling near a light fixture. They went through that house with a fine toothed comb and managed not to find it. If they had had that tape they would not have needed to make that deal with her. But then there was the Jane Doe case that they did not know about at the time they made the deal. She was supposed to have told them everything. Once they got the video evidence of the Jane Doe assault and located the girl, they should have cancelled the deal, since she had not told everything. But what the heck. We have a screwed up justice system where multiple sentences are served concurrently, and since that assault would likely have netted a shorted term than the manslaughter she would not have spent any more time in jail. So here we have a couple whop go around abducting young girls together, sexually assaulting them together, filming their fun and games. Then when he turned on her she went to the police and ratted him out, blaming him for everything. He is in jail for life and she is out on the streets. FWIW a friend of mine lived around the corner from them. |

Police arrested five people after a disturbance at a hotel. The guy who was burned was present but was taken to hospital, not arrested. Two of the people arrested at the hotel have since been charged with arson in connection to at least one of the fires. I suppose that we could take a huge leap of logic and assume that there was an incident that the police responded to and two of the 5 people arrested were later charged for arson in connection with at least one of the fires set, but the person who had burns to 90% of his body had nothing to do with the fire. > > That said, the guy who cooked himself in the electrical substation is > surely dead by now. > > |

All the reports I read said the 90% burn guy was arrested separately from the other two whop were charged. Lets see your cite. -sw |

When I talked to my SiL the other day she said that there must have been bombs because people heard explosions, and when my nephew posted a video of the fire you could hear them. They sounded to me like aerosol cans exploding. Having done stupid things liked throwing cans into fire in the past I can tell you that an aerosol can most definitely does sound like a small bomb going off. Even a can (unopened) of pork and beans in a camp fire is a hefty explosion. |
