Your followup in the recent thread about Vilsack, the new Secretary of
Agriculture, which mentioned the too compley and inadequate food safety system in the US might be about to be answered: http://tinyurl.com/brnmv2 From the blog linked above: "Rep. DeLauro has been a tireless advocate for improving food safety for years, and now that her best friend is Barack's right-hand-man...we can't help but wonder if perhaps big change in food safety really will happen this time, and happen fast. Turning politics into policy goes on in backrooms and boardrooms and bedrooms all around DC on a regular basis, doesn't it? If Rahm and Rep. DeLauro are living under the same roof, we can only imagine that while they're not having pillow talk, they may well be having table talk. Surely if Rep. DeLauro is best pals with Rahm, and food safety is her big issue, she's gonna have more clout with Barack than she previously had with any other president." Anyhow, there's a bill before congress to modernize and unify food safety procedures in the US. We shall see. -- modom |

The problem with USDA is that it's been more in the pocket of the industrial farm complex in the last few decades than on the side of the consumer. Cindy -- C.J. This one always looks good on the food package contents: "To amend the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act and the egg, meat, and poultry inspection laws to ensure that consumers receive notification regarding food products produced from crops, livestock, or poultry raised on land on which sewage sludge was applied." Of course you're probably referring to the new "Food Safety Administration." Which might even pass regardless of the current recession. -sw |

The blog I linked to up thread references that proposed entity, but the legislation under consideration proposes other things in addition to a unified food safety administration. Here's a second link: http://tinyurl.com/b538cd Rep. DeLauro's bill has provisions such as: "1. Requiring food companies to implement preventive plans and meet performance standards for contaminants in food. 2. Creating a system for certifying the safety of imported foods. 3. Establishing a strong risk-based inspection regime for food companies. 4. Granting the government explicit authority over all food-production facilities. 5. Enabling enforcement tools: Mandatory recalls, civil penalties." We shall see. -- modom |
