I am making a dip for tomorrow night for my birthday party and I'm
using packaged onion dip as my base. I can't tolerate MSG, so I found a natural brand of dip mix that doesn't have it but the assortment of flavors was very limited. Unfortunately, what I really want is the Knorr Vegetable dip... but as I said, I don't want to risk an MSG headache so I'm searching for options. Any ideas of how I can spruce up a simple packaged onion dip? I don't want any kind of spicy-Mexican-salsa type thing, and I don't like bell peppers, so those are the real limits. I would love to hear any ideas. I'm planning on serving it in a hollowed out bread bowl but I'm not entirely against doing a hot dip. I've got crisps and chips and veggies to go with it. Thanks so much for any ideas! Jen |

It's fantastic. And beats the heck out of any mix. |

Adding to onion dip? That would almost amount to cross contamination. Just put out some pesto, guac, hummus and tapanade along side! Variety rather than complexity!? Andy |

Nice ideas for 'along side'. But would dill and onion go together? Mushrooms and tomatoes? Celery? I guess anything that would go with onions could be mixed in. Mashed chickpeas. Beans. |

Beans. sandi, I only remember that dill is awfully pungent. Might try a small measure to begin with? To be honest, I've never heard of complicating onion dip but it's YOUR birthday. HB2U, HB2U. I wouldn't try to add dill to an onion dip. It's going to be a confusion of flavors. Try cream cheese, bacon, horseradish and mix in a little milk or cream to thin it to desired consistency. Or cream cheese and olive (your choice of olive) Thin with milk. Basically, do whatever you want. If you like the vegetable dip, (never had it, but I'll wing it) get a portion of dried veggies -- peppers, onions, celery, tomatoes. Rehydrate in a small amount of liquid, chop finely or give it a whirl in the blender. Add to cream cheese or sour cream, taste for seasoning, add garlic powder, salt and pepper. Janet |
