I guess you've never seen Lile K's gallery of regrettable foods. Have a
gander. Or a pound of butter.

The photos in the link you posted are questionable. These come from old
cookbooks and old TV advertisements and are definitely the real deal.

I rather like this one: "French Fry-Encased Hot Dog On A Stick".
(What's wrong with protein and vegetable/carb for lunch? ;-)

With the exception of deep fried mars bars (discovered here in rfc),
I've never heard of those things.

How to lose weight: walk an hour a day and keep your saturated fat
intake to 10-20 grams daily.

Do you *ever* watch the news? The Bacon Explosion was all over the news
earlier this month.

when the ice melts on the patio where I can get to my grill this is
going on it. This is guaranteed to add several pounds of weight and
possibly coronary shut down.

I have no reason to believe that CNN and other television and print news
services fabricated a story about the Bacon Explosion. Are you so paranoid
that you think they DID?

I saw that, too! I'd be tempted if I could get some help from a friend
or four ...

Just a little bite to say I tried it!

I don't see anything wrong with the Waffle-Coated Hot Dog On A Stick. It
doesn't appear to have maple syrup on it or anything like that, and a waffle
coating isn't all that different from a cornbread coating. I'd probably put
a little zigzag of honey mustard on it if I thought it needed a condiment.

Welsh rabbit is a classic nosh for an afternoon or midnight snack. It's not
disgusting at all, and its presence on the web site only shows that the
author has no knowledge of the dish's distinguished history. And the correct
name is Welsh RABBIT, not "rarebit". "Rarebit" is a ****headed affectation.
The Wikipedia article cited contains this quote regarding the name of the
dish: "Welsh Rabbit is amusing and right. Welsh Rarebit is stupid and
wrong."

Chicago deep-dish pizza is also a classic dish. It's only disgusting to
people who have an entire sequoia forest up their ass.

I haven't tried the bacon doughnut, but I know Voodoo Doughnut in Portland
makes a maple-bacon doughnut which Tony Bourdain liked very much. I'd be
willing to try it.

I don't see anything wrong with the concept of a tongue-and-pastrami
sandwich, but the picture depicts a sandwich with some kind of orange
Cheez-Whiz-looking stuff oozing out, and I'm suspicious of that.

The Waffle Couch is only marginally different from poutine. Not that I'm
espousing poutine either, but if the Waffle Couch is on that site, how come
poutine isn't?

And finally, what kind of wrong-headed idiot thinks King Cake is disgusting?

I really like that woven bacon look.

A heart shutdown is guaranteed. Just give it time! Hubby absolutely
*LOVES* bacon, but has given it up since his heart "procedure" last
September. He didn't need to lose weight, but he lost it anyway so
he's trying to maintain his weight now.

Good question. LileK is an author who collected photos and excerpts from
old cook books (and advertising in magazines dealing with cooking). Most of
his material comes from the 1930's - 1950's. I find the site hiliarious,
especially since I've seen images drawn like that in cookbooks that belonged
to my mother. There's the Happy Father grilling super steaks while the
Smiling Mother makes Jell-O in neat shapes to serve to the spotlessly clean
kids for dessert. Made with 7-Up! LOL

Some of the things shown are pretty funny looking but
I have a relatively recent (for me) recipe for Christmas Jello that's
made with 7-Up, and it tastes great. There's nothing wrong with
Jello....or a dad who grills, or spotlessly-clean kids. I'm sure
people in the 22nd century will make fun of us. ;-)

My partner and I are both fat, and neither of us found a single thing
we'd touch on that page. We eat primarily home-cooked, fresh foods,
heavy on the veggies and whole grains.

(I just hate it when people say that fat people are all fat because they
eat crap all day. It's a silly assertion.)

I totally agree, Serene. David and I are both overweight, but losing.
However, we don't eat junk food or highly processed foods. I cook 99% of
our meals at home from fresh or frozen vegetables, grains, and fresh meats.
We don't eat a lot of bread either.

David has an underactive thyroid, but takes medication for it. Mine is
normal. Sometimes I think one problem with being overweight is just having
too much of a good thing. I also believe it's largely hereditary. My
father and David's mother were always overweight and ate relatively normal
diets.

The web site was merely pointing out food that the author believes is
excessive for one reason or another. (I disagree with several of those
assessments, as I posted earlier.) I'm pretty sure the site wasn't intended
as an attack on fat people, nor as a serious accusation that fat people are
fat because they eat that kind of food. Otherwise it would have been
entitled something like, "This Is Why Cyber**** Is Fat."

(Sorry for the delay, but I almost missed this - did 'the mark all as
read' thing again...)

I know that the link you posted is pretty funny - seen it before too -
but it still doesn't explain to me why you think the link Lin posted
was 'questionable'. Looked to me like the food (and I use that term
loosely) shown there was real enough and must have been cooked by
someone and then consumed by that someone or their poor
families/friends. <g>

Jill never gave an answer as to why she wrote that the photos are
"questionable." I think it's just that the foods depicted there fall so far
outside anything in Jill's experience that she feels compelled to deny their
very existence. When one of the foods (the Bacon Explosion) made national
news, she tried to insinuate that the stories about it were falsified.

Jill's culinary world is pretty bleak, and "gruel" is the standard by which
all other foods are measured. If it ain't even CLOSE to gruel, then it must
not exist in Jill's world.
