I have never understood the attraction to a slice of apple pie topped
with a slice of cheddar. Where and HOW did that food custom start? I have lived in the north and now the south but never see anyone serving apple pie this way. |

I've eaten it on rare occasion at home but not out as I never see it sold or served that way but in homes. |

A slice of apple pie with a chunk of sharp cheddar was de rigueur when I was growing up. It's delicious! Such a complimentary contrast of flavors... yum! |

You're talking to a guy who always has exactly the same menu for every holiday. He's not much for branching out. If Billy's mother never paired apple pie and cheddar, the combination is strange and frightening to him. Bob |

I find it an interesting idea...but never have seen it served in a private home or in a restaurant. Every time I have seen apple pie served, it is with vanilla ice cream. |

What I can't understand is the slices of processed cheese I have seen on apple pie. Yech. Apple and cheddar is a good combination. Pear and blue cheese is an even better one. |

But it was always cheddar cheese with apple pie. It is much better with apple pie than ice cream. |

Apple pie is good with ice cream if the pie is hot. Cheddar is good whether the pie is hot or cold. The combination I've never understood is apple pie stuffed with caramel... ackkk! Toooooo sweet! |

A good friend gave us Harry & David pears, apples, and cheddar for Xmas- really a good combo... |

I've had apple pie with caramel ice cream or cinnamon ice cream, and those are both excellent combinations. Rum raisin ice cream is also good with apple pie. Bob |

However, I have to admit that I prefer my pie cold. > The combination I've never understood is apple pie stuffed with > caramel... ackkk! Toooooo sweet! Yech. That sounds disgustingly sweet. |

In northern parts of the UK, spiced fruit cakes such as Christmas cake, are eaten with cheese. Same in the Caribbean, where 'bun', a spiced cake/bread, is eaten as a sandwich with cheese, especially around Easter. Have never been offered cheese with apple pie, but have heard of it. |

Apple pie with vanilla ice cream is good as long as you don't call it "pie a la mode" as in New York State. -- James Silverton Potomac, Maryland Email, with obvious alterations: not.jim.silverton.at.verizon.not |

Of course, I was never above having leftover pie for breakfast, but that is more of an idiosyncrasy! -- Jean B. |
