Default Apple/Cheddar Pie

I have never understood the attraction to a slice of apple pie topped
with a slice of cheddar.

Where and HOW did that food custom start? I have lived in the
north and now the south but never see anyone serving apple pie this
way.

Apples and cheese are such a natural combination, IMO. They just go so
well together. I've eaten it on rare occasion at home but not out as I
never see it sold or served that way but in homes.

Mr. Bill, just WHERE have you lived that you have never seen this? A
slice of apple pie with a chunk of sharp cheddar was de rigueur when I
was growing up. It's delicious! Such a complimentary contrast of
flavors... yum!

You're talking to a guy who always has exactly the same menu for every
holiday. He's not much for branching out. If Billy's mother never paired
apple pie and cheddar, the combination is strange and frightening to him.

As I said...I have lived in the north....i.e. Michigan, Indiana, Ohio,
Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and south, Florida, Georgia, Alabama and
Tennessee.

I find it an interesting idea...but never have seen it served in a
private home or in a restaurant. Every time I have seen apple pie
served, it is with vanilla ice cream.

It started as far back as I can remember. It has to be real cheddar.
Even a mild one will do. What I can't understand is the slices of
processed cheese I have seen on apple pie. Yech.

Apple and cheddar is a good combination. Pear and blue cheese is an
even better one.

I never heard of apple pie with ice cream until I was a teenager.
Whipped cream, with cherry, peach or rhubarb, or ice cream. But it was
always cheddar cheese with apple pie. It is much better with apple pie
than ice cream.

Especially with the addition of walnuts and port.

Come to my house when our friends are visiting. I eat my apple pie with
cheese, my wife and Steve eat theirs with chocolate ice cream. Steve eats
every pie with chocolate ice cream, including the prune and apricot pie.

Did you mean it's better with cheese than with ice cream?

Apple pie is good with ice cream if the pie is hot. Cheddar is good
whether the pie is hot or cold.

The combination I've never understood is apple pie stuffed with
caramel... ackkk! Toooooo sweet!

I've been offered the combination in restaurants in New England and
Yorkshire, England and I agree that it is good!

Have you ever had a cheese/fruit plate with wine? A good friend gave
us Harry & David pears, apples, and cheddar for Xmas- really a good
combo...

I'm not averse to the idea, but I've never had it. I've had apple pie with
caramel ice cream or cinnamon ice cream, and those are both excellent
combinations.

Rum raisin ice cream is also good with apple pie.

Hot or cold, I think it is better with cheese than with ice cream.
However, I have to admit that I prefer my pie cold.

Yech. That sounds disgustingly sweet.

Fruit and cheese go well back in European culinary history. In northern
parts of the UK, spiced fruit cakes such as Christmas cake, are eaten
with cheese. Same in the Caribbean, where 'bun', a spiced cake/bread, is
eaten as a sandwich with cheese, especially around Easter.

Have never been offered cheese with apple pie, but have heard of it.

My immediate thought was that the chocolate ice cream sounded
awful, but I guess it might not be that different from chocolate
coated fruits and other chocolate-fruit combos. Still, I think
I'd join you with the cheese.

Apple pie with vanilla ice cream is good as long as you don't call it
"pie a la mode" as in New York State.

Apple and cheddar are a very traditional combo and have been for
centuries.

o.k., with *chocolate* ice cream just sounds bizarre.

A slice of apple pie and a piece of cheddar cheese were, and still are,
pretty standard fare at a Vermont farm's breakfast table. Pies were/are
commonly served for breakfast. And the combination is often found on
restaurant dessert menus around here. Especially during "leaf
peeper"season!

Ayuh. To paraphrase that goofy guy from FoodTV, "good eats"! Who, btw,
attended the New England Culinary Institute in Montpelier, VT.

I didn't realize this tradition had continued. That's kind-of
neat! Of course, I was never above having leftover pie for
breakfast, but that is more of an idiosyncrasy!
