Either way, I think salt is the least dangerous preservative those people use. OP - canned peppers if you must, but please don't even feed Hormel chile con whatever to your dog. Bulka |

For grins, I went to http://www.lowsodiumcooking.com/ and on their front page they state: "A can of chili may contain 2400 mg all by itself; homemade chili may contain less than 100 mg" Interesting in their bullet-point items they should mention chili. Is there some reason why you don't make your own and then freeze portions for later use? There isn't a canned chili out there (beans or no) that tastes half as good as what I can make. It's so damned easy, too. Just sayin' ... --Lin (agreeing that much of the canned stuff is no better than dog food -- and I would pity the dog that had to eat it) |

If your Doctor has recommended low sodium, they should have also told you a target range to aim for. You are in luk though as if it isnt too restrictive, it is possible to fit in some canned types. If you are told 1,000 mg a day, it's workable. I am sorry that I'm out just now so can't check the label but scanning the labels one of the higher end *looking* ones has a series of 3 types that can be worked in. Since I'm out, I can't look for the brand name in my kitchen but I recall one of them is named something like 'western steak chili'? I think a common name producer like Cambells, Hormel, or such who does alot of canned foods. Watch the portion control part. Don (somewhat sodium restricted, 1500 MG max) can have 1/2 can (1 can is listed as 2 servings) and i think that was about 750mg or half his day's alotment. He just has to watch the rest of the days intake a bit but this way, he can still have his chili at times. BTW, if you are new to the low-sodium bit, you are gonna get a suprize reading labels. Don't assume the lesser known product is a bad one. Pastene's crushed tomatoes for example don't have a 'low sodium' label' but are quite low and taste even better than Contadina (Contadina brand is lower on most things than hunts or del monte and taste better too). Don't assume the 'low sodium' label' means that item is actually lower than another brand one the same shelf. Soy sauces are particularily to be noted for that. Kikkoman lite has almost twice the sodium of Datu Puti brand for example, and the Datu Puti tastes better ;-) |

I love chili, am on a low-sodium diet, and haven't found a one. So, I make it myself. |

I know you were looking for premade, but you can make a shitload (bigger than a buttload) and freeze it with ingredients that make you happy... |

You need to eat everyday. You need to cook. Ain't that hard - there are a buncha idiots on this list that do a great job. Jeeze Bulka |
