Default 417,651 rec.food.cooking posts hammered my computer!

A few weeks ago my computer started bogging down completely at certain
times and was generally sluggish the rest of the time. Turns out it
was choking when my Agent offline newsreader would update R.F.C with
new posts.

So I made a copy of my archive directory - 19 gig! - and then deleted
from Dec 31, 2008 all the way back to May 28, 2006. Post count went
from 417651 to 26,222. The CPU load for re-indexing new messages I
can understand but I was a bit surprised that the high stored post
count made the pc sluggish in general - there was still quite a bit of
available memory. <shrugs> I blame Microsoft. :-)

Anyway, now my pc is good! (Well I had to hack back alt.english.usage
too but it was only half the size of RFC)

Have you tried fresh batteries in the mouse? Mine always acts
squirrely when the batteries are low.

It's not cordless. Do usb plugin type optical mice have batteries?

No, only cordless models.

I'd blame your 7 year old version of Forte Agent.

Unless it's an optical, have you cleaned the trackball and pulled the

OK, it *has* fallen on a hardwood floor a bazillion times. Maybe
something is loose.

Sometimes they simply stop working altogether or erratically. I recently had
a wired laser mouse simply quit.

When I replaced my PC last month, I decided on a cordless Logitech keyboard
and mouse. Nice features and works flawlessly. It's the same combo I have
at work.

I had the same experience with a great MS wired laser mouse that I had
for years and really liked. Then I replaced it with a MS cordless
mouse and it's made computer life sooooo much easier. No more sore
wrist and I can initiate mouse commands while sitting quite a distance
from my keyboard.

BTW - My mouse uses 1x AA rechargeable battery that lasts around six
weeks before I change it over for another one. Before that I used an
ordinary AA Energizer Alkaline battery which lasted maybe seven weeks
but couldn't be recharged.

Just curious. How about your battery life?

I drop mine a lot. I suppose I buy a new one every few months and always
keep a spare on hand

I think you should reformat your hard drive.

Sadly, there are people who would believe you and do it.

It's too soon to tell, Bob, as I've only had this keyboard and mouse for a
couple of weeks. The keyboard uses 2 AAA batteries and the mouse uses 2 AA
batteries.

My only other experience is with the wireless "laptop mouse" I use with my
laptop at work which uses 1 AA battery. When I first got it, it came with
a rechargeable battery. Our support group would rotate freshly recharged
batteries as needed. I would say, on average, that I needed a replacement
about every 3 weeks or so. The last time I went for a replacement, all of
their spares were being charged so they gave me a new Duracell battery.
That was 6 months ago! I don't think I'll be going back to rechargeables,
and I doubt I'll start using them at home for this new setup.

Duh. Ya think that would work?
Okay.

Is it okay if I am not online for a few days?

You have a laser mouse? I'd say just clean the opticals.

And the mouse pad if you are using one.
