Default REC - Spam & Gravy On Biscuits

This is from a pdf cookbook (e-cookbooks.net) called Econo Meals: How
To Prepare Delicious Meals On A Budget.

Posted especially for Sheldon.

Spam & Gravy On Biscuits

1 Can Refrigerated large buttermilk biscuits
1 Can Spam (12 oz.)
1/4 Cup Onion, chopped
2 Tablespoon Butter or margarine
2 Tablespoon Black pepper
2 Cup Milk

Prepare biscuit according to package directions. In a large skillet
over medium-heat, saute Spam and onion in butter until Spam is lightly
browned.

Stir in flour and pepper. Cook 1 minute, stirring constantly. Stir in
milk.

Cook, stirring occasionally, until mixture just comes to a boil.
Reduce heat to medium. Cook, stirring occasionally, until gravy is
thickened.

Serve over hot biscuits.

Dad likes to make turkey spam omelets.
I am so not a fan! I've been living low sodium for 16 years now.

A couple of weeks ago, I'd signed up for some volunteer work with our
local CPA Alumni Association (which I am a member of) to do Warrant
calling for the county Sherrif's dept. warrant officer. (Rusty is a
hoot. Never **** off your local cops, they will amuse themselves at YOUR
expense!)

They served us BBQ Brisket.

The Brisket was so salty I could barely choke down one slice. It was
like eating a salt shaker.

I gagged when I saw another volunteer salting it. <gag gag gag>...

Last time I looked at the stuff in the tube, and Spam, it was pretty
darned expensive.

How much does that 12 oz can typically cost? Something like three
dollars? That comes out to 4 dollars a lb. Hardly a bargain. There's a
lot of fat in there and not 'reusable' fat the way bacon or chicken fat
is. Tube biscuits aren't that cheap either.

We don't pay 4 dollars a lb for chicken or pork even when they're not on
special.

Ah, you're one of those "logic" and "reason" guys. A guy that likes to
throw "numbers" and "figures" about and use "addition" and "division."
You might be right on a technical level and maybe even on most levels
you can think of. However, let's just see how far all that fancy
schmancy logic will get you when you're in your cardboard box dying of
hunger with that $2.19/lb chicken or pork butt with not even a pot to
**** or cook in. I'll be sitting pretty under that overpass outside of
town with my cans of spam enjoying their pink salty gel-like goodness,
washing it all down with rain water and occasionally some hobo coffee.

Spam all in one lump, just as it came in the can?

Locally biscuits in a tube cost about $1.00.

Yes, Some people might dice or crumble it, but they take all the fun

LOL Living in the upmarket part of town then

However by not buying relatively expensive things such as Spam (tm), am
also avoiding ending up in a cardboard box he he he.

Have had worse 'homemade' biscuits. One just needs to overlook the trans
fats in there

But they still have that odd taste - totally identifiable as Bazooka
biscuits. I can't get past that taste.

I see Spam as poor-folk food and a war-time item that refused to just go
away. My mom used to make a Spam and cabbage dish that I disliked
greatly. Phooey! OTOH, if you consider the cost per pound and the
expense on your health it's cost is great.

25 years ago, I would make a breakfast of biscuits and no-cook
strawberry jam. I dug the simple purity of it all. Now I can't remember
when was the last time I made biscuits from scratch. Guess I'll have to
work at correcting this. :-)

Sorry to hear it. Maybe you shouldn't watch other people eat.

People's taste for salt vary. On those rare occasions
when I eat at McDonald's, I salt the fries.

After I read Chris's comment, I checked it out at the local store.
There were shelf tags for cheaper biscuits (well over a dollar) but none
in stock. Furthermore, they weren't within reach for normal people. At
eye level, most of the stock was marked on sale for US$2.00, normally
US$2.99. They were large biscuits, but not a lot of them. We don't eat
biscuits at our house, and I guess other folks around here don't either.

I've a friend who loves those things, buys them by the case. Even
flattens them out and uses them as dumplings.

Only time I ever ate them was at the deer camp years ago and none of us
could make a decent biscuit. Nowadays, when I'm lazy, I use the frozen
biscuits, take a little longer to bake but nearly as good as homemade.

Apparently that is what they are. Just pop them in the oven and bake.
Haven't tried them. The Maternal Unit is happy enough with the tube
biscuits and my occasional forays into scone-making.
