Default Lunch Today (3/11)

I had to conduct some business in downtown Beaufort today so I stopped in
Hemingway's Bistro for lunch.

http://www.hemingways.org/menu.htm

It's pretty much your standard soup/salad/sandwich place. They do have a
quiche of the day, too The chalk board on Bay Street listed stewed lamb
shank as the special of the day. Okay, I'm there! So I walked down the
little alley to the entrance, which faces Waterfront Park on the
intracoastal waterway.

The lamb shank was delicous! Falling off the bone tender, in a nice rich
gravy. The rice side dish left much to be desired. From the texture I
suspect it was Uncle Ben's converted rice. They'd added some cooked (from
frozen) peas. There was no seasoning whatsoever. Adding salt & pepper
didn't even perk it up; it was utterly bland. But the lamb shank was great
and more than enough for a meal by itself (I brought half of it home with me
to have for lunch tomorrow). I tried a local brew called Palmetto Lager. A
slightly dark beer, it was pretty tasty.

The weather was fantastic; it was about 82F with a light breeze off the
ocean. I ate outside on the patio under the pergola, listening to the birds
sing and watching the people walk along the waterfront. A gorgeous day for
dining on the patio.

I think I'd like that place, and I love lamb shank!

I got the feeling from looking at the brief regular menu this wasn't
something they'd usually cook. They did a good job of it.

It was a pleasant way to spend the afternoon. I got stuck waiting for the
the drawbridge coming back off the mainland but that was okay. The meal and
setting put me in a mello mood

Obviiously not their typical offering, but if the lamb shank was well
prepared I'm sure their simpler offerings are good. I like the menu for
lunch.

I would have requested some extra gravy for that rice.

I'm disappointed, no pictures at their web site, and you took none either,
boo-hoo. I would have liked to see that pergola... what was growing on
it... perhaps a little chickadee could have seasoned your rice. hehe

LOL The pergola was covered with fine mesh over the top so as not to
encourage "seasoning" from the gulls. I don't carry a camera around with me
to photograph food. I probably should have requested extra gravy. Not sure
it would have helped.

Sounds great! (Especially to one who's living where it's 19 outside!)

I'll bet they put so much into preparing the lamb shank that they
didn't put much effort into the sides. At least the gravy might have
helped the rice.

Sounds lovely. :-) It was 40 degrees here and pouring rain this
morning, but I did not mind. We are in a bad drought and seriously need
it!

Is Beaufort near St. Simon's Island? When my youngest son was 16, he
went on an archaeological dig at St. Simon's and he had a wonderful
time. That is a beautiful part of the country.

I'm not familiar with St. Simons. Beaufort is to the north of Savannah in
SC, on the coast. I agree, it's a gorgeous part of the country.

That would explain it. I've only ever been to the airport in Savannah, GA.
(Oh and once on business in Atlanta.) I'm not at all familiar with Georgia,
although if there's a hurricane I am told I should evacuate at least as far
as Augusta
