Actually, Becca, nothing much surprises me anymore. I'll have to try to
remember to keep a cake in the house. It might pacify a burglar and prevent
something worse from happening. :-)

Yes! Years and years ago (20+), a very nice Mormon family from Utah
moved into the neighborhood a few doors away from me. They were in
the house less than 6 months when their house was invaded and the
entire family was tied up. Their lives were threatened, but they
didn't have much for the robbers to take. They sold the house and
moved back to Utah a few weeks after that.

The article said it was a chocolate chip cookie cake. I never heard of
that, but now I am dying for one. :-P

All it is is one of those big chocolate chip pan cookies that are
decorated and say Happy Birthday or whatever on them. I don't know
why people insist on calling them cookie cakes. They're no a cake.
It's just a big cookie.

These days, sure I believe it. They're lucky they had cake since it doesn't
sound like they had much else. When I was a teenager there was a rash of
burglaries all around my parents house. The cops said the thieves probably
did surveillance to figure out people's schedules and which homes were empty
during the day. There was evidence the burglars made themselves sandwiches,
drank sodas, etc. My mother didn't work so they avoided our house. These
days the bad guys don't care if someone is at home. It often ends badly

No, you live there because you inherited it. What was all of the talk
about selling it? And the drama about the damn refrigerator relative to
the resale value?

What's an "off duty Marine"? I used to work for the Army, as a
civilian, and the enlisted folks were always carping about how they
worked for pennies an hour, since they were on duty 24 hours a day, 7
days a week. I wasn't really sympathetic, since they got there at the
same time of morning, and left at the same time in the afternoon, as I
did, and normally got weekends off. There was rotating duty for the
enlisted on the weekend, but nobody knew why, since there was absolutely
nothing to do.

LOL I suppose you're never really "off duty". Parris Island Marine Corps
Recruiting Station is a mere 30 miles away. The recruits don't get any time
off. From what I saw when we lived there in 1973 they didn't even get a
chance to sleep. LOL Other Marines stationed there, however, are allowed
to live off base and (whoa!) even take second jobs off base. As long as it
doesn't take away from their assigned duties. There are some retired
Marines who work here, too. (They're like my father was; they retired at
age 55 or 60 but weren't ready to quit working yet.) IWO, no need for me to
carry a gun, which is what our friend Om was alluding to.
