Default dinner last night

A couple days ago the DH and I caught an episode of "Diary of a Foodie"
on PBS. One of the highlighted recipes was Pasta with Beet Greens.

http://www.gourmet.com/recipes/diary...th-beet-greens

He made it last night and it was really good. I had never had beet
greens before.

We used Trader Joe's whole wheat penne and I didn't have any pine nuts,
but it was still very good.

Looks very nice. Penne, especially the small whole wheat penne, is rapidly
becoming my favorite pasta shape. I don't care for pine nuts either.

I love beet greens! They're my favorite part of the beet, in fact.
Did you find them at your local farmer's market?

I would have left out the raisins and olives, added some romano. Pine
nuts optional.

I never worry about diets. The only carrots that
interest me are the number of carats in a diamond.

I like the raisins- the DH doesn't. It really didn't need any cheese.
And I am always game for cheese.

We got a bunch of beets at our local produce market. (Russo's) It isn't
quite growing season yet here in the Boston area. The farmers markets
usually open up in late April.

Both my husband and I like beets - but we never cooked them at home
before. We were inspired by the tv show and luckily we were able to find
beets with the greens still attached. Interestingly, the store also sold
greenless (greenfree?) beets.

Last night I grilled loin lamb chops in the BBQ. the were delicious. We
had them with fresh asparagus, a small salad with blue cheese dressing
and a nice crusty roll and a bottle of Baco Noir.

IMHO Beet greens are every bit as tasty as swiss chard. :-) Chard and
beet greens are at the top of my list for favorite leafy greens and
veggies in general, topped only by asparagus and artichokes. ;-d

Our local wal-mart is currently carrying beets with the greens attached
I'm happy to say. :-)

I wouldn't buy clipped beets. Even if the greens are wilted,
and unusable as chard, I want them still attached.

The produce manager wops off the tops and tosses them into the dumpster...
if you happen to be there at the right moment and ask they'll give you all
you want for free, if they don't take them for their own use, produce
manager's treat.

Why? The attached leaves steal moisture and nutrients from the beet root
(the root is the storage tank for the foliage), that's why root crops are
typically sold with their tops removed. It's best to wop off the tops
immediately at harvest but lots of folks erroneously think root crops are
more "natural" with the tops on, so for the imbeciles they are left on as a
marketing ploy (they'll even label them "Organic" and charge double...
there's no such thing as Organic produce, ALL produce is Organic... folks
enjoy getting ripped off. By the time the tops begin to wilt the dastardly
damange is done, it's those carrots with tops that become woody, radishes
and turnips with tops become pithy. People are actually willing to pay
extra for root crops with tops, but they wop them off when they get home and
never use them... the dummies don't even have a compost bin. By the time
the tops from the typical bunch of 3-4-5 smallish beets are prepared they
cook down to nothing, there's not even one child's portion. Buy chard
instead, chard IS beets... people who eat chard but say they won't eat beets
are hipocrites, and ignorant.

What would have been really interesting is if you could have bought
beetless beet greens!

I love cooking with wine.
Sometimes I even put it in the food.
