When my brother was here he got a craving for rice and asked if there was any Minute Rice in the house. Uh, no, but I have real rice ![]() cooker, either! I've never been a fan of Guacamole. Jarred roux? I've never seen it. My mother was very fond of McCormick's gravy packets and I've also seen jarred and/or canned gravy. Both work in a pinch if you haven't got the drippings and stuff to make real gravy with. Frozen Texas Toast, yeppers. Bottled cocktail sauce, absolutely. It's a key ingredient in my meat loaf recipe which uses Quaker oats as the filler ![]() Jill |

Some of this was when I was a kid, age 17 and barely could make hamburger helper but wanted to try new things (guacamole, cocktail sauce, initial rice attempts). I was brought up on packet gravy and still find it useful in a pinch if a meal doesnt lead to making it's own or I lack time. We arent big on gravy here except thanksgiving and then, I do the real thing. Grin, there isnt much dreck I havent at least tried once to find it was dreck. The difference is, I dont get it *again*. |

![]() I will add my name to the foods you mentioned. I had never heard of jarred roux until here a few days ago. There are plenty others, such as canned hominy, pig's feet, canned corn or carrots, fresh beets, canned squash, parsnips, rhubarb, a lot of fresh mexican veggies, such as cactus. I would say liver, but I've bought it for our dogs on occasion. Libby |

You have to admit that it is a good idea to bread chicken and oven fry it like that. However, paying a steep price for seasoned crumbs..... My wife loves my oven fried chicken, but I have a good supply of bread crumbs that I make with my stale bread. It is easy enough to add the seasoning on my own. |

I just gotta have that pepperidge farm herb stuffing at thanksgiving. I may add to it, but that *has* to be the base (grin). Even if the one time in Japan I got in port too late to get any and had to make spiced bread to tear up, which was great, I want my old pepperidge farm. Sue me ;-) |

I will confess to buying canned green beans and mixed veggies, fresh chicken livers and combo gizzards and hearts for the dogs. It keeps their eyes bright and their coats glossy. It also make my kids shudder and swallow hard when confronted with green bean casserole at extended family potlucks. <Yes, I know. No, you don't have to. Just take some of that fruit salad with the marshmallows on it instead. I don't care if you finish it.> |

I heard Michael Pollan being interviewed on NPR this morning. He admitted to buying Fruity Pebbles cereal for his kid, and someone tapped him on the shoulder and said "I'm watching Michael Pollan buying groceries.". He said he avoided that store for months afterward. One of the funniest things I've ever heard on NPR! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Pollan |

It's mandatory on Thanksgiving. My mother made a similar concoction when I was a kid but I could never eat it because I had an uncle who had pigs on his farm and it looked too much like pig slop. A few years ago my mother put me in charge of making it for Thanksgiving dinner, but this time with the can of fried onions. It was delicious. |

I do by frozen fruits fruits and vegetables. I confess to buying frozen French Fries, but that is because I life fries and rarely eat potatoes, so they usually go bad before I eat them. But frozen entrees, appetizers, pizzas etc. I can live without. Then there is the junk food sections. I occasionally buy tortilla chips and salsa, but only if I am entertaining, and people seem to like that stuff. I don't buy it for myself. |
