My mother used to buy Minute Rice. When my brother was here he got a
craving for rice and asked if there was any Minute Rice in the house. Uh,
no, but I have real rice It only takes 20 minutes to cook and no special
cooker, either!

I've never been a fan of Guacamole.

Jarred roux? I've never seen it. My mother was very fond of McCormick's
gravy packets and I've also seen jarred and/or canned gravy. Both work in a
pinch if you haven't got the drippings and stuff to make real gravy with.

Frozen Texas Toast, yeppers. Bottled cocktail sauce, absolutely. It's a
key ingredient in my meat loaf recipe which uses Quaker oats as the filler

I confess, if the frozen toast includes frozen waffles, I've gotten all of
the above except jarred roux.

Some of this was when I was a kid, age 17 and barely could make hamburger
helper but wanted to try new things (guacamole, cocktail sauce, initial rice
attempts).

I was brought up on packet gravy and still find it useful in a pinch if a
meal doesnt lead to making it's own or I lack time. We arent big on gravy
here except thanksgiving and then, I do the real thing.

Grin, there isnt much dreck I havent at least tried once to find it was
dreck. The difference is, I dont get it *again*.

Of those you mentioned, I have bought Minute Rice...once. That was all it
took. I've not bought any of the others

I have also never bought:

canned frosting
jarred mole sauce
pancake mix
stuffing mix

I will add my name to the foods you mentioned. I had never heard of
jarred roux until here a few days ago. There are plenty others, such as
canned hominy, pig's feet, canned corn or carrots, fresh beets, canned
squash, parsnips, rhubarb,
a lot of fresh mexican veggies, such as cactus. I would say liver, but
I've bought it for our dogs on occasion.

You have to admit that it is a good idea to bread chicken and oven fry
it like that. However, paying a steep price for seasoned crumbs.....
My wife loves my oven fried chicken, but I have a good supply of bread
crumbs that I make with my stale bread. It is easy enough to add the
seasoning on my own.

Same here. Once I got the concept down, I didnt get pre-spiced crumb mixes
except for my fav comfort food stuffing. I just gotta have that pepperidge
farm herb stuffing at thanksgiving. I may add to it, but that *has* to be
the base (grin).

Even if the one time in Japan I got in port too late to get any and had to
make spiced bread to tear up, which was great, I want my old pepperidge
farm. Sue me ;-)

I used shake and bake when I was young. At the time I preferred the
one for pork chops. As I gained experience in the kitchen, I stopped
using it and haven't given a thought to Shake & Bake in years.

What, you mean *ever* or for personal consumption?

I will confess to buying canned green beans and mixed veggies, fresh
chicken livers and combo gizzards and hearts for the dogs.

It keeps their eyes bright and their coats glossy.

It also make my kids shudder and swallow hard when confronted with green
bean casserole at extended family potlucks.

Uncrustables (those inexplicable frozen peanut-butter-and-jelly-sandwich
things)
Fondue in a box
Frozen vegetables with the butter/sauce already on them
Gravy
Apple pie filling

I grew up on the stuff, and still like it a lot. I probably make it once
every two or three years, and then I don't need it again for quite some
time. :-)

I am perfectly happy just mixing together HFCS-free ketchup,
a good horseradish (Fred's is one good choice), lemon
juice, Worcestershire sauce, and a tabasco-pepper sauce.

I heard Michael Pollan being interviewed on NPR this morning.
He admitted to buying Fruity Pebbles cereal for his kid, and
someone tapped him on the shoulder and said "I'm watching
Michael Pollan buying groceries.". He said he avoided that
store for months afterward. One of the funniest things
I've ever heard on NPR!

I never buy any sort of prepared hamburger helper stuff, waffle mix,
cake mix, shake and bake stuff, Mrs. Smith pies, ready to go tomato
sauce, instant anything. It would be easier for me to list the canned
and boxed items I DO buy.

A girlfriend cooked me a first meal of pork chops in a George Foreman grill
and green bean casserole (I think it came out of a box).

I picked at it but ate everything on my plate. She was so mad at me forever,
accusing me of hating her cooking.

Hate is such a lousy word. So was her cooking, in all honesty!!!

That it has. That it has ;-)

If it helps any, very few of these items are more than 'tried them out'
except I do get pre-made spagetti sauces (Classico, Bertoli, Victoria).

My mother made a similar concoction when I was a kid but I could never
eat it because I had an uncle who had pigs on his farm and it looked too
much like pig slop. A few years ago my mother put me in charge of
making it for Thanksgiving dinner, but this time with the can of fried
onions. It was delicious.

I have to wonder about some things that I see in grocery stores. I do by
frozen fruits fruits and vegetables. I confess to buying frozen French
Fries, but that is because I life fries and rarely eat potatoes, so they
usually go bad before I eat them. But frozen entrees, appetizers, pizzas
etc. I can live without. Then there is the junk food sections. I
occasionally buy tortilla chips and salsa, but only if I am
entertaining, and people seem to like that stuff. I don't buy it for myself.

Mom once served a canned ham (back in the pre-gourmet days). Just plopped it
out of the can, jelly included and served it cold. I took one bite and
promptly threw up onto the kitchen table. Mom never served ham again. We
didn't mind!!!
