None of us three are supposed to be in that area, which is about an hour
from Rome. Vilco is waaay north of Aquila and I am halfway betweehn Vilco
and the earthquake. That's not to say that one of them might not be on
holiday there. It's a fabulous area. The city is pretty much destroyed and
deaths have reached 90 so far.

Giusi,

What kind of building construction is predominant to cause so much
destruction? I'm guessing brick or concrete which can't flex like wood
construction.

The news here reports there are plenty of aftershocks ahead.

Probably 1,000s of misplaced citizens. Sad.

Glad to hear from you!

Best,

Andy

Most Italians live in apartment buildings and yes, they are block and
concrete or stone. An ancient Baroque church is disintegrating before the
cameras. It was strong and there has been a pretty much continuous
aftershock. A lot of buildings pancaked, especially modern quake resistant
ones. I'm sure they'll tell us why.
Italians have already donated too much blood and thousands have phoned in
offers of housing while thing get sorted. I am a bit too far to be a useful
place for someone from there.
There is conjecture that the city is too wrecked to be reinhabited. It does
happen, although usually smaller places. The latest rescue came from a
pancaked student housing building. The girl was in bed but a table fell
over her and the dogs found her alive with only an injured shoulder. Most
in that building apparently died.

Giusi,

I'm afraid to look at the damage.

I've been through many earthquakes.

I know it's not a pretty sight.

She's surely OK, farther from the quake than me and Giusi.
Not too strong for a quake, but damn direct due to the rocky soil there.
here we're on a thick layer of clay which adsorbs a lot of energy from
quakes, while inner Abruzzo is rocky, so no absorbtion of energy, here's why
so much damage with a quake of about 5.8 richter-scale strength.

The buildings that collapsed were especially the older stone/brick made
ones. Some recent buildings collapsed, too, but the majority weren't recent
concreet buildings. If you ckheck at the images of rescue teams, they're
almost always on walking on piles of big stones and bricks, only soem images
show them on concrete parts.

This is a wonderful thing, indeed.

That building reminds me of that school in southern Italy, a brand new
school which almost totally collapsed during lesson time.

The San Francisco quake of '89 was 6.9 and killed 63. We were lucky.

Yes. If the Great SF quake of '89 had actually happened in SF, who
knows what the death and destruction would have been? It occurred 75
miles south of SF (almost a two hour drive), in a large park about the
size of SF, which park in turn is located in the middle of nowhere.

Yeah, yeah, I know where the epicenter was. We were lucky.

Here's what Wiki says about it.

Given the distance between the quake's epicenter and some of the
worst-hit areas, geologists were surprised at the severity of the
resulting damage. Subsequent analysis indicated that the damage was
due to the amplification of the earthquake's Seismic waves by waves
reflecting off the deep (about 24 km(15 miles)) discontinuities in the
Earth's surface.
